What's wrong with my 3yr old LCD HDTV if it turns on then right back off, then on and right back off....... continuously?

This some times points to a problem with the power control module.
Another option...but a long shot...there is a prank device that does this sort of thing. Try covering the TV remote sensor with something and turn the TV on at the TV without the remote then see if it stays on.

lag time between shots

My current camera takes forever between shots. what is this feature called and what should I look for in a new camera? It also takes terrible pictures at night.

Lag time is not a feature.. it is more of a disadvantage of many cameras...especially compact cameras.
Digital-SLR cameras basically have almost no shutter lag time.
Low light is also a issue with Compact cameras. The lens size and size of the sensor are both very small and do not let in very much light.

The D5000 usually comes with a 18-55mm lens. This lens is good for casual shooting...landscapes...close up portrait.
The 55-200mm lens will be good for creating depth of field (DOF) effect from long distance. Good for general sports shots and nature. The 55-200mm picks up where the 18-55mm leaves off and will be a very good addition to your lens inventory.

This is not known to be a Fisheye type lens.
It is compatible with most Nikon cameras.

If one of the ports is a HDMI..you can use a HDMI cable.
The other option is a VGA cable and connect VGA to VGA on the TV. You can then set the computer to use the TV as a second monitor.

Can you use non-digital lenses with this camera?

I have lenses from an analog Pentax P3 - will those lenses work with the D3100?

Usage of Film Auto Focus lenses can be limited. It is best to check what cameras are compatible with the specific lens model you have.
Pentax lenses generally only work with Pentax bodies.

A Camcorder is specifically made for video at a minimum resolution of 720x480 at standard definition...much higher in HD. The format is generally digital but the recording media can be Hard Drive, Memory Card or Tape (MiniDV being most common).
Digital Camera is geared towards still photography. Most higher end Pro Digital-SLR cameras do not do Video...and what ones do generally just do HD.
Lower end Digital Cameras do some limited video at 640x480 or lower and reduced frame rate.
