lag time between shots

My current camera takes forever between shots. what is this feature called and what should I look for in a new camera? It also takes terrible pictures at night.
Lag time is not a feature.. it is more of a disadvantage of many cameras...especially compact cameras.
Digital-SLR cameras basically have almost no shutter lag time.
Low light is also a issue with Compact cameras. The lens size and size of the sensor are both very small and do not let in very much light.

 Nikon - AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens - Black
Nikon - AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens - Black
Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 55~200mm f/4~5.6G IF-ED Telephoto Zoom Lens: Broaden the scope of your photography with a lightweight zoom lens that offers telephoto coverage for close-up images of distant subjects. Vibration Reduction technology reduces camera shake for dramatically sharp images and HD video, even without a tripod. The broad zoom range is ideal for portraits, action shots and scenic images.

Will this lens work with the D5000? How is it different than the lens that the D5000 comes with? I want a telephoto type lens but cannot spend a ton

The D5000 usually comes with a 18-55mm lens. This lens is good for casual shooting...landscapes...close up portrait.
The 55-200mm lens will be good for creating depth of field (DOF) effect from long distance. Good for general sports shots and nature. The 55-200mm picks up where the 18-55mm leaves off and will be a very good addition to your lens inventory.

If one of the ports is a HDMI..you can use a HDMI cable.
The other option is a VGA cable and connect VGA to VGA on the TV. You can then set the computer to use the TV as a second monitor.

what is the difference between a camcorder and a digital camera

A Camcorder is specifically made for video at a minimum resolution of 720x480 at standard definition...much higher in HD. The format is generally digital but the recording media can be Hard Drive, Memory Card or Tape (MiniDV being most common).
Digital Camera is geared towards still photography. Most higher end Pro Digital-SLR cameras do not do Video...and what ones do generally just do HD.
Lower end Digital Cameras do some limited video at 640x480 or lower and reduced frame rate.

Low lighting lense

What would be the best lense to purchase when using my Nikon D3000 in low lighting without a flash?
Low light shooting requires what is referred to as a fast lens. Fast in that it allows higher shutter speeds because it lets in more light due to larger aperture opening.
The smaller the aperture number the bigger the opening.
f/1.8 is bigger than f/2.8 and these are a lot bigger than f/22.
For low light shooting look for lenses in the f/1.8 or f/2.8 range and shoot at ISO 400 to 800 with noise reduction on.
