Better than the Nest for simple control
on December 7, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
This thermostat took a minute to get wired up for me, since all the newer thermostats require a "parasitic" 24v connection to either a new power source or directly to your furnace control board. Once I got that in place I was up and running. I found that I wasn't able to do anything with the thermostat until it was connected to power and I couldn't set up my account ahead of time with the thermostat offline. Getting connected to wifi is a simple task, even if entering a password is somewhat tedious on the touchscreen, which is obviously made to an ideal size to control the termostat and NOT to be used as a tablet. Having replaced an older 7 day programmable thermostat the operation was simple and familiar to set a program and let it run. It was the connection to my account and then eventual connection to Google Assistant that I was looking for. This took a few tries to get both linked, but once I did I had control over my home's temperature from Google Home (super cool) and then I could use the Honeywell Total Home Connect App outside of the home to control the temp when I was away. I dislike that this thermostat goes completely offline when the power goes out, but it does revert to it's previous state (heating or cooling) and is able to reconnect to the internet after a power loss, unlike early versions of the Nest.
Overall this is a somewhat simplified connected thermostat that works well, without any of the advanced modes like learning your schedule, but did provide me with off-site control and worked well.

Hoover for Pets goes Cordless
on November 23, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
For a long time Hoover has made the pages of consumer reports as a viable alternative to some of the high-end vacuums by Dyson, especially in the pet hair realm. This version makes a few compromises to become cordless.
Battery:
Battery life on this vacuum is awesome, owing to the 24v Lithium Ion battery supplied. A wall mount and decent charging system make it easy to keep this vacuum ready to go.
Cordless:
One of the drawbacks of the cordless nature of this vacuum is how much that 24v battery weighs. 7.3 pounds doesn't sound like a lot but when you put it in your hand it's actually quite heavy. The motor is quite powerful and does a good job of picking up hair and debris. the other cordless drawback is that size of the dust cup - this one is quite small and needs to be emptied fairly often.
Cleaning:
Overall this machine does a good job. The weight and attempts to trim where it doesn't matter make a decent cordless vacuum that can go just about anywhere and with the attachments, are actually quite useful. I will definitely NOT replace my corded vacuum for one like this, but it will remain as our main machine until the dirt really pies. up.

Arlo Pro 2 - Closer to the complete system
on November 22, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
Build:
There's lots to like about this kit - the build quality of the cameras, the clever magnetic camera mounts, the user-friendliness of the app. The components of the Arlo Pro 2 kit are well made and work well together. The batteries on the cameras seem to work well but suffer some in the cold. If outdoor long-term surveillance is a permanent installation for me I'll have to look into one of the alternative power sources for the cameras such as solar.
Sertup:
Once I got the hub/siren plugged into my router and it picked up an IP address, downloading the app was simple and walked me through connecting the cameras. The app was very user-friendly and defined the user experience up to that point.
Performance:
The cameras worked great and I was very pleased with the image and video quality during the day. Definitely 1080p and usable imagery. After dark in night mode is a whole different story, however. Grainy and fuzzy video defined the performance after dark. I also found that I had to restart the cameras to reconnect more than once. All of these quirks stacked together to point to burgeoning tech that still needed development.
Connection to Other Devices:
This is where I had really high hopes to connect my Arlo to my Google Home. I was able to connect the accounts, but the google home wasn't able to receive any triggers from the Arlo or pass any info. Part of this could be on the Google home and not the Arlo, but others seems to have it figured out.
Overall I like the Arlo as a strictly wireless surveillance system, and for that, it's a little expensive but does the job well. As an integrated part of the smart home of the future, the Arlo has a ways to go, as does all the other technology surrounding it. Netgear is to be commended for how far they HAVE brought this technology. Hopefully, the next version of the Arlo is the ideal home surveillance system.

Replace the keyboard of your Microsoft Surface Pro 7, 6, 5 or 4 with this silver Brydge keyboard. It conveniently lets you open the screen at your preferred viewing angle without a kickstand, and its backlit keys increase visibility in low light working environments. This Brydge keyboard is lightweight, so it doesn't add extra bulk to your device.

Get the advantage of the SurfaceBook!
on November 22, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
This keyboard really answers a niche for the Surface and Surface Pro that Microsoft themselves should have filled. I've long been annoyed with the floppy keyboard that came with my surface pro for a number of reasons, chief among them the small and poorly placed trackpad, and the inability to use the thing in my own lap.
Enter the Brydge. After examining the device, I have a healthy respect for the hinges. After installing my Surface Pro I have even MORE respect for the hinges. A possible future downside could be that the hinges will need replacement liners, the rubber piece that protects the magnesium surface but allows it to grip firmly. The hinge appears to be well made and should last many many cycles of fold and unfold.
The Brydge keyboard is made from a similar color and feel magnesium metal as the Surface line and fits nicely It honestly looks like a Surface Book except for the large hinges that are visible when open, closed no one would know better. the battery life is reported to be 3 months between charges, I haven't had to charge mine since I gave it a full juice after receiving it.
Backlit keys are an added advantage, with 3 levels of brightness and the glass-topped trackpad is a compromise. It's still hinged at the top like the surface pro is, but is slightly larger and seems to work far better for me. I know I'm less frustrated with it anyway. This is a little pricey for an accessory that is meant to fix a fundamental flaw in Microsoft's design, but I do like it, and would recommend it to others.

Awesome Blender replaces multiple appliances
on November 22, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
First Impression:
Having used other Ninja Blenders before, this newest model apparently keeps up their tradition of making solid useful heavyweight kitchen appliances. At first, I thought the touch screen was gimmicky, but you'll see later in the review it actually makes sense. This blender is typical of Ninja's 1200w base and pitcher. Most materials are heavyweight plastic but well made. I was bummed to see that older ninja pitchers do NOT fit on this base, but the older ninja smoothie containers/mason jars DO. The solid base that is mostly enclosed and somewhat easy to clean is also typical of Ninja's well made blenders. The pitcher included the long blade with intermediate choppers to make short work of ice.
Spiralizer:
New to me was the spiralizer that Ninja included with this kitchen system. I love any time I can gain new tools and toys without having to waste more room in the kitchen. This appliance gains on that by utilizing the powerful motor/base of the blender. I did take a stab at cooking a meal with zucchini noodles as a replacement for pasta and was shocked at how much my family enjoyed it. After reading more about this tool, I'm guessing hardcore spiralizers will be down on it for the fact that it only includes blades for two shapes of noodles, and the spiralizer itself DOES take up a decent amount of space even though it doesn't include the motor. For someone like me who will casually dabble in the spiralizing of veggies for pasta, I'm more than pleased with it and the fact that I didn't have to buy another appliance.
Food Processor:
Again I was appreciative of the fact that I gained another kitchen tool with this gadget and didn't have to give up a whole cupboard. The Food processor locked onto the base just like the spiralizer and the blender does.
Overall:
This thing is the master of both smoothies and margaritas and everything in between. I mentioned earlier that I initially thought the touchscreen on the newest model was gimmicky, however after having used all the attachments and multiple vessels now with the Ninja, it's revealed a useful feature - it only shows the modes that work best for the container you have locked onto the ninja at the time. The Smart Modes blend and pulse just as if you were standing there working the button yourself to get optimal blending. This thing is great and I would highly recommend.

Awesome In Ear Noise Cancelling
on October 28, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
Sony demonstrates with these headphones that they are a player in the noise cancelling game. I would go so far as to say that the kit integrated into these headphones puts Sony head to head with Bose.
This form factor of headphones take a little bit of getting used to... or you're someone who hates having your ears covered and you know you like the in ear form factor already. I have mixed feelings about how heavy these kinds of headphones get to attempt to give them some battery life, integrate controls, etc.
These fit well, and didn't feel like they were going to fall out, in spite of the obvious weight and mass in these headphones. Noise cancelling is amazing. I've used headphones from B&O, Bose, and others with noise cancelling and these were among the best I've used. The amount that these protrude can cause a little wind noise when outside, or can let small amounts of ambient noise leak around the headphones. Noise cancelling is effective and absolute, with the amount of noise around you actually coming as surprising when the cancelling is turned off.
Charging is completed with a handy charge and carry case that has it's own built in battery. Battery life never quite got to the full three hours reported, but was pretty consistently at/over 2.5 hours in use. Pairing via bluetooth was easy and painless with no need to consult the manual.
Sound is created by a small driver, due to the small nature of these headphones. The drivers have a wide range of response and do a good job of reproducing both highs and lows. They can't quite reproduce the same range as a big pair of ear cans, but that limited range is a trade off for the size.
Overall I liked the these headphones, felt that they were a good value for the price point, blowing their next closest Bose competitor out of the water by adding noise cancelling. In ear fit is an acquired taste, but accommodate lots of activities.

It's like you're actually playing with Lightning!
on October 13, 2017

This remote control toy, for lack of a better term, comes from Sphero, the company I recognize for bringing us the real live BB-8 from Star Wars. This appears to be the beginning of an onslaught of interactive robotic toys that need the brains of our smartphones to process all that they have going on.
Build - The car itself is fairly robust, and heavier than I expected. The details are top notch and even powered off it looks like a VERY accurate Lightning McQueen model. Powered up and you get your first glimpse of the big LCD that makes up the windshield and expressive eyes that are the cornerstone of all the Cars characters. The front wheels are also spring on separate A arms which make the car even more expressive when turned on. Working lights and the loud clear sounds that come from the built in speaker complete this wonderful model.
Play: I was a little surprised that at almost $300 this car didn't come with a separate remote, even to play with it without all the other features. Reported battery life is 40 min on 2 hours of charge. I didn't get any significantly different than that myself. Not including a remote means one thing these days - it requires a smartphone to run. Granted you can do LOTS more with a smartphone than you can with a static remote. The many many MANY ways would keep a kid busy with this thing... now if only it was meant for kids and not adults... I won't go into detail on all the modes of play that the app provides, as you can easily download it yourself and check them out. Some of the games have you interacting with the screen more than the car, and lighting just provides sounds and lights, and then the main event - actually driving lighting. He is equipped with tires/suspension/powerful motor that lets it do donuts and drift on almost all floor surfaces (except carpet) and he's actually pretty good at it. This enhances the play and makes you look like an even better driver than you actually are.
Overall I struggled a little bit with the cost of this toy compared to others, but Sphero has done their best to make up for it in the gameplay provided in the app. This is a top notch toy, likely aimed more at the collector or adult who enjoyed cars than it is to kids, but I didn't mind that one bit. I even let my kids play with it too!

3200 Lumens in a tiny package!!!
on October 12, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
I often travel and present in varying different kinds of setups for my career - connected displays, built in projectors, and sometimes I come across a site that has nothing. That's when it becomes key to have a portable projector in your bag!
This model is on the smallest side of enterprise grade professional projectors. This particular model sits at the intersection of brightness, size/weight, and resolution. While 800x600 ius on the small side it works well for me at an extremely high value. This projector is a star both in a fully lit room and with the lights off/lowered. Brightness will blow your image up VERY visible in spite of overhead flourescent lights. I dig the digital/automatic keystoning that adjusts itself as it goes.
Build is decent an Epson is a well known name in projectors. I haven't had any running or hookup issues with this projector in my time using it.
Overall I love this thing and I travel with it in the car all the time. The size is small enough that it doesn't take up too much space. I DO wish at this price point it came with a bag or carrying case. I would recommend this projector to anyone looking for a value projector in the enterprise realm that has outgrown a pico projector.
The attached photos show a regular screen being projected on the wall both with the lights on and off.

Amazing Sound and Noise Canceling at a price
on October 11, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
It's apparent from the moment you slip the wrapper off the box that these are meant to be B&Os flagship headphones in the Beoplay line. I actually expected just a little more out of the box... but that serves no real function other than to deliver you the headphones.
The build is exceptional, with a tight feel to assembly and the plastics, fabric and leather combining in a very plush feel. I love that the oversized ear cups are removable for both cleaning and replacement. The new fad of having the L and R silkscreened into the cups is not lost on me either, especially when touch controls come into play on these headphones and it's only on one side. Ear tension was adjustable with the headband and I was easily able to find a comfortable position. the cups themselves cradle your ears and are made of soft supple leather.
Also a plus, and showing that they have a mind towards long term ownership, is the removable battery pack, one feature that sets these apart from their competitors. Speaking of competitors, I line these up with other B&O headphones and the Bose Quiet Comfort 35s, which make them a little hard to compare with vastly varying differences in features and price ranges, but all having wonderfully working noise cancelling.
Noise cancelling on these works amazing, and you are always shocked at the amount of ambient noise that is being canceled/filtered when you take them off.
The controls are where this particular pair of headphones get a little wonky, and B&O tried something new/borrowed from another pair in their line. The outside of the right ear is a flat surface that is essentially a touch pad. one tap to pause or play, swipe up or down to turn off noise canceling, old school ipod clickwheel spins on the ear cup result in vol up or down. I found this scheme infuriating to no end, and the only detractor to keep me from rating these at 5 stars. It was unresponsive and annoying. I was aching for a manual volume control and often resorted to my phone to do just that.
Sound quality is difficult to put up against any other pair of headphones. Clarity and cleanliness as well as full range were all apparent and amazing. I've seen some other reviews that found the H9s sound quality to be muted or overlaid, but I think that may have something to do with the kind of music they were listening to and perhaps they were simply surprised at what the music ACTUALLY sounded like. I tried these in both wired and wireless modes, with and without noise cancelling and I enjoyed the sound in all settings.
Overall I love the quality of these phones, noise cancelling and bluetooth wireless are top notch. The value is lacking a little bit in the price and the touch control scheme are going to scare some buyers away and would make me caution anyone to really familiarize yourself with them before purchasing. Once you do, however, you'll be extremely pleased.

More router than you need, keeps the lag down
on October 2, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
Having tried Linksys' AC3200 last year, I was excited to get my hands on this updated model to see what had changed and if it was indeed faster with games.
Setup was super simple, but omitted Linksys' app, which i had enjoyed using before. The webpage based setup on the router walked me through all the steps and was flawless in execution. It worked well both from a laptop and my phone, when my phone went dead in the middle of setup.
Connectivity is a given, I was a little surprised it only has 4 ethernet ports. Integrated gigabit ethernet, built in USB 3.0, and a Combo eSATA/USB port, as well as a WAN port and a well recessed reset button are all present and accounted for.
Advanced setup and features in the firmware: This is probably overkill for most home users, but then again this router is branded with the killer networking name, so it needs to provide some added value for the experience, and deliver on it's gaming promise. I appreciate graphing bandwidth usage by device and trending it over time in the firmware pages themselves. I had the option of manually messing with the QoS (Quality of Service/Media Prioritization) or I could just turn on the Killer presets and see what happens. I chose to do just that and paired it up with my laptop.
Having the Killer Router and the Killer Doubleshot wireless card paired up felt for a moment like I was doing everything right. After gaming for a while and playing a number of different titles, I started to grow a little numb to it. Perhaps I was so used to the performance from my AC3200 that the killer prioritization engine didn't make that big of a difference for me? I didn't notice any significant increase, but I did start monitoring my bandwidth and noticed that lag was indeed down, ping was up and everything was working well. I would liken this to adding a "turbo" button to an already fast PC. It's blazing and then you press the button... are you going to be able to tell the difference all the time?
Overall: I'm enjoying the performance a lot. I don't know that I could justify replacing a fairly new router with this one, but if you're in the market to upgrade and you do any gaming the addition of the Killer Engine might be for you. Adding that to Linksys's solid feature set and an already great router is just icing on the cake. I'll keep using it for my main unit and see if I notice any times or situations where it appears to save my hide (others in the family streaming video and me playing online) as the real test of the engine. It's also got me considering putting Killer enabled chips in other machines as well.

iPod connector for 2005 Volvo XC90?

One of my collegues at work mentioned that he had Best Buy install an iPod adaptor to his 2004 Volvo XC90 (problematic for most of us owners as the radio user fiber optics, MOST system). I have a 2005 XC90, but the radios are the same. He had thought it ran him about $130 when he Best Buy did it a year or two ago. I have a local Best Buy that I can bring my car to and have this done as well, but I thought I would ask the question first of Best Buy online and understand what unit they offer for this connectivity and how it's installed. Please advise! I'd like to do this within a week... I miss having iPod connectivity!! Chris
The 2005 Volvo XC90 DOES NOT have an auxiliary input, nor can you add one without an accessory like the GROM MST. That's the only way to plug in an ipod or anything to an XC90

how is the picture with this projector with daylight in the room?

3200 lumens is pretty bright. Epson would recommend you not have direct daylight for optimal use... I can tell you this projector works VERY well with direct overhead lighting, and it keeps up with sunlight okay. It's definitely not like the older deal breaker projectors that required the blinds closed.

Simplify your everyday life with the Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Use voice commands to enjoy music, get answers from Google and manage everyday tasks. Google Home is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and can control compatible smart devices such as Chromecast or Nest."

I want to use HUE lights with this. Can I buy a 2nd Google Home for my 2nd floor so both floors can access Home to turn off/on lights? If my phone (synced to Home) is out of the house, will voice activation still work for the lights?

Google home will let you group and name the lights for each room. I don't believe they are intended to be used overlapping though. In fact you might confuse it with more than one connected to the same google account. The Google Home works without your phone at home, since it connects directly to the HUE account as well as the internet and wifi directly.
