Awesome Cleaner!

You know the old mantra right? Everyone is grossed out by the water that comes out of the carpet/rugs when they first grab a cleaner like this and start working... well that was very true in my case. I've always had cleaning services come out to treat our rugs and small-ish carpeted areas, but with an aging dog, the need was becoming more apparent. At first I was put off by the amount of colored and clear plastic this thing is built out of, but then I realized part of the satisfaction of using a cleaner is watching it suck up all the nastiness coming out of your rugs/carpet. It worked well on two lower pile rugs and excellent on low to medium pile carpets. It struggled with a longer pile rug and eventually I gave up on that one since the cleaning brushes were trying to suck the rug fibers in around the brushes.
Labeling this as a pet only product is perhaps a little gimmicky, as it seems some companies only use a specialized rubber in place of bristles when switching to the pet versions of products, but this one seemed to do an excellent job of grabbing all the dog hair entwined in my rugs.
For use on upholstery is almost always where these upgright style cleaners fall down, I would say it did an OKAY job but not overly impressed with it versus any other upgright cleaner out there.
Loading chemicals and cleaning the machine are a breeze, which is a relief once you get it full of that nasty water from getting so much dirt and sediment off your floors. There were two tanks to clean,with built in handles, and I do recommend putting them away dry making sure there's nothing in either, as I've had other Bissel products leak when accidentally stored with clean water in them.
Overall this cleaner is well made, fairly well suited to it's advertised job of being especially built for pet hair, and I think I might just start using this more often than I vacuum!

Powerful range extender w/ limited setup options

I found the Amped wireless range extender a breeze to setup, but that was one of the first windows into how it worked and where i was going to get frustrated later.
It seems the market is saturated right now with mesh routers, extenders, mimo, and other products. It's tough to wade through exactly what I should be using to give the areas I want decent coverage. This product excels at one thing, but unfortunately ONLY one thing: picking up an already strong wifi signal and sending it farther.
The setup went smoothly and it had me tweak the position of my router watching the gain to get the best signal from my original router. Piggybacking wirelessly off of my already operating router, left me quite close to get a signal decent enough to make the Amped setup happy. I did find my range extended after finishing the setup, but it was more on the order of 20 feet, not the drastic change I expected. I decided to dig into the software and that's when I discovered that the setup was unable to put the extender into Access Point mode and pick up a WIRED signal and repeat it over wireless. This is a feature that is included in most lower priced/lower powered devices, and I expected it to be here too, but it was lacking. This was disappointing to me and part of the reason for rating only 3 stars.
Build and features on the extender itself are impressive: included high gain antennas, usb ports, 5 port switch, separate switches for power and front LEDs, all of which are tethered to that wireless only repeater mode.
if you are someone who KNOWS that WIRELESS ONLY is the way you need to go, then this router is the choice for you. If you need more flexibility and versatility, you will find the Amped Helios comes up lacking. Possible future software/firmware upgrades could add this feature, but at the time of review it wasn't able to be placed in a wired repater mode.

This was the first new hair dryer in our house in a while, and I had no idea how much more powerful and useful they had gotten while I was not in the market for a dryer.

This thing feels solid with good controls that won't break for quite some time and easy to operate. Extra long extension cord with the usual built in fusing that was appreciated. It is light and easy to hold with an ergonomically styled grip.

I've owned a number of Bose products in the past, and their commitment to development and advancement of technology continues to amaze me!

This thing is beautifully made with anodized aluminum forming the body and brushed soft-touch plastics forming the base and top where the buttons are. The heavy rope that makes up the handle is a nice touch as well, it takes a moment to realize that's a flexible piece of the product. There are the usual holes all the way around the body of the speaker for emitting sound as well as embedded micro usb and 1/8-inch plug ports on the side, with contacts on the bottom for the (separately purchased :(...) charging dock. The speaker is quite heavy between what I assume are the battery and the drivers inside...

The controls on top are clearly labeled with two multi-function buttons that I was able to figure out to pair without cracking the manual open once. I have to say that it actually gets LOUDER and more clear when placed on something with some mass such as a solid floor or a granite countertop, and can lead to a lack of low end when used in a hanging or handheld situation. This is of course par for Bose products, but it's still surprising the first time you turn it up how clear and crisp the sound is.

OVERALL:
I love this thing. I have been careful not to expose it to the elements too much as it's still new, but I'm sure as the luster wears off I'll eventually end up testing the water resistance of it whether I mean to or not. For now I'm enjoying the vertical form factor, and the quality of sound that I'm getting and it's firmly replaced my Jambox.

This little charging puck removes the need for stabbing your beautiful speaker with a micro usb cable. As we all know continually plugging and unplugging micro usb plugs will eventually fail, hence lots of new products using USB-C, which I'm a little surprised this one does not. The puck has a horseshoe shaped rubber fitting that forces you to get the speaker aligned properly to make contact with the points, which is a little tedious but works out well. There is also a nice indent in the bottom of the puck to recess the plugged in cord so the puck can sit anywhere. Because it doesn't have a lot of mass to it, sometimes the cord wants to push it around on your table/desk if the speaker isn't on it. This charging dock is made from similar materials as the speaker itself and feels solid and substantial in the hand.

Awesome Presenter with Cursor control!

Do you remember the Airmouse concept of the mid 2000's? That sort of Died? That's this thing. Only this works!
The construction is impeccable, it feels perfectly weighty and slim in your hand, smooth, but not so slippery that you're going to fling it. I was able to charge it, power it up, and get it connected without ever opening the manual. The included bluetooth dongle fits perfectly in the base and has a nice fabric tug handle to remove it. This same void is also where you plug it in to charge it.
As a presentation remote the Spotlight works very simple The one large button advances your slides, the upper button activates your cursor/spotlight/in powerpoint laser pointer, and the bottom button is usually back. It's important to note that all of these buttons have configurable behavior in the Logitech software that accompanies the presenter. This is a VERY nice feature that many others have been missing out on for a long time.
The package includes a nice pouch for the presenter, with the bluetooth dongle docked, and a charging cable. I was a little disappointed at this level that the charging cable didn't fit in the pouch so it can all get tossed around in my bag together, but I'll definitely survive. It also took a little bit of jockeying to get the charger cable plugged into the port because it's recessed so far, and they made the plug on the cable long enough, however it's narrower than the opening itself.
So far battery life seems to be as advertised, which means I won't need to charge it that often, and then maybe having a charging cable with me all the time won't be a necessity.
Overall I love it, and would recommend to anyone who gives presentations in a professional setting.

Residential Wifi Coverage Solved

I've been tracking the many new developments in the field of "residential mesh wifi", since I, like many of you, have the very first world problem of living in a home that seems to challenge consistent wifi coverage. I've been very interested in the Google/Eero/Orbi that have all recently hit the market, but I already own some decent Linksys gear, some of it fairly new. When then Velop was launched, I saw that it was setup the same way as my most recent router, so I decided to take the plunge.
Setup: This requires some tech savvy, as the only way the Velop CAN be configured is through the app. This was so extremely easy to do. You have to be careful to follow the order, as you need to plug one Velop into your router/internet source first and then setup subsequent nodes. This is all assisted by the Linksys app which I found extremely easy to use.
Build: The Velop nodes themselves feel well made and heavy. The ports are all recessed far into the bottom and have a cable guide coming out the one corner. They look like flower vases or pieces of art. The white color isn't exactly unobtrusive, but it isn't terrible to look at either. The unboxing was sort of a glorious affair with all the velop nodes nested in fitted slots in the packaging. The power adapters are a bit large for sharing an outlet, but are well made and have the newer style flat power cords coming out of them that make placement even easier.
Operation: Once I got all setup with the app and got all three nodes placed I decided to tinker with it a little and wander around with the two peripheral nodes, as I was using them in full wireless mode, where they simply repeat the wifi they can see, rather than running wires to them. I found that the configuration that left me with the fastest speeds resulted in the other two nodes clustered closer to the main node than I expected, but I decided to run with it. It was soon apparent why this setup is getting reviews showing its far faster than the others that are out there. This is one point that makes the Velop stand out - a dedicated "back channel" radio for communicating between the nodes, separate from the normal radio for broadcasting/receiving your device's wifi signal. This stand apart feature makes the Velop very quick in overall speeds. After tinkering in the app and placing media priority on my Rokus and Apple TVs, I found that I could stream netflix with zero interruptions from other internet heavy operations where I couldn't before.
Cons:
There are a few small complaints that keep me from giving this system 5 stars. One of them is the lack of a "Home" node. I think it remains to be seen that if you are someone who is aware enough that you need a three node mesh wifi system, you likely also have some wired devices that you would like connected. perhaps a printer or a media server, or a few things. In fact all four ports on my former Linksys router were occupied, and if it had four more I wouldn't have complained. I found myself having to create a workaround for this by attaching a switch or another device, and I wished that there was a home node that has those extra ports. Also, the app is lacking in some more advanced features (certain types of parental blocking for example) that Google and orbi have excelled at.

Awesome Blender, works well, replaces my Bullet

I was a little apprehensive about this thing at first, as I thought it was trying to do too many things at once. After having used it for a few weeks I love it!
The base is well made and heavy, there is obviously some wattage behind this thing. It does take up some space, but it's worth it. it won't fit under my counter with the full pitcher on it, but I can still blend with the smaller cups with it tucked away, and then slide it out to use the largest one. the display is a bit unnecessary, but the controls are large and easy to use. The white LED screen does look nice as well. The Auto IQ function works like you would if you stood there and pulsed a regular blender: pulse, wait, pulse, wait, pulse, wait, pulse for longer until fully blended. It gives the solid chunks a chance to fall down in again and get blended. I use this for smoothies way more than i expected.
I was a little apprehensive about the largest pitcher being Acrylic and not glass, especially at this price point, but it's heavily made and feels plenty sturdy. The pitcher positively locks to the base and the lid positively locks to the top of the pitcher, so you know when everything is in place without touching much of it to start blending. i appreciated the little touch like the fact that the spout lid on the pitcher also locks in the flipped up position. The thickness of the pitcher does make a ledge for drippings to catch on, but this is pretty minor. the large pitcher also has a multi stage blade that looks pretty wicked, and does an amazing job of chopping ice/frozen solids.
The smaller cups are smoothie/individual sized and lock into the center portion of the base and have their own screw in blade much like a bullet. I really appreciate that this thing eliminates one more kitchen appliance that I have to keep around to eat how I would like.
Overall the materials are a little plasticky, but the build quality is high and this thing feels like it will last. it blends well and the different modes are well suited to doing it's job. the Auto IQ is perfect for most things you're trying to make, but are used to standing there and blending by hand with older machines. Taking one more thing off my counter is just the icing on the cake. I would recommend it to anyone in the market for a new blender.

Belkin Cures one of Apple's Problems

Like many of you I own the iPhone 7 which had the headphone jack made "obsolete" by Apple. This product serves to bring back, at least the ABILITY to plug in both power and headphones at the same time.
The Belkin Lightning Audio + Charge Rockstar essentially serves as a splitter for your Lightning port. Plugging in in place of your cable, and giving you TWO lightning ports. This allows both music/headphone use and charging at the same time. Seems simple enough right? This product gets part of the way to solving the headphone problem, but not quite. You either HAVE to use it with lightning headphones, or you must use it with a lightning to 3.5mm audio adapter STILL to be able to plug in old school headphones. I assume Apple must have somehow disallowed that feature from being included with this product, but it seems like a no brainer.
My other issue with this adapter, and it may be inherent in the idea of "splitting" the lightning plug, is that is it PICKY when it comes to chargers and cables. Some of my aftermarket cables didn't work with this, as well as other AC-USB power adapters. It works fine plugged into a 2.1a apple charger, but my computer ports that run at 2.1a+ wouldn't charge it at all.
Overall this thing does what it's purported to do, and my complaints about how it should work are somewhat esoteric in the face of what apple will allow Belkin to build. This adapter works and that's what's needed for iPhone 7 owners.

Excellent Starter for future Photoshop users

Elements is a scaled down version of the cornerstone softwares for editing photos: Adobe's Photoshop. Photoshop is THE best package on the market to manipulate images. The Elements line is Adobe's entry level nod; a cheaper version for someone who might not need the full power of Photoshop, but still has a need to work with images, occasionally. Adobe has obviously spent a lot of time trying to determine which features were absolutley essential and much be part of the Elements product, and they've hit the nail right on the head. Price point is excellent the features are abundant. Where the lining starts to show is when we install it (or if you have windows 10, try a few times before getting it installed) and then the fun begins.
It feels very much like they started will full Photoshop and then removed advanced features they thought we didn't need, rather than being built for the Elements customer. They include three modes Easy, Guided, and Expert. If you find yourself seeking expert mode quite often, you're probably a candidate for full on Photoshop.
The part that keeps this program from being 5 stars in my mind is how hard it is to find the tools or to use some of the functions that I know are in there sometimes. Because this is the gateway to Photoshop, they've named and placed almost everything where it exists in the non Elements version of the software. This is GREAT if you're someone who will eventually be using the full version of Photoshop. If you're not taking that plunge... it adds a layer of complexity that an increase frustration a little.
Overall this Photoshop Elements is very good at what it does, includes some quite advanced features like turning a frown into a smile. It leans towards being almost too powerful, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but makes it harder to use for a learner

You cannot trigger a still while actively taking video. You can grab frames from the 5.4k video after the fact, but you have to stop recording and switch modes to take stills/video.

Yes. They use 3M command strips that are easily removeable.

iPod connector for 2005 Volvo XC90?
One of my collegues at work mentioned that he had Best Buy install an iPod adaptor to his 2004 Volvo XC90 (problematic for most of us owners as the radio user fiber optics, MOST system). I have a 2005 XC90, but the radios are the same. He had thought it ran him about $130 when he Best Buy did it a year or two ago. I have a local Best Buy that I can bring my car to and have this done as well, but I thought I would ask the question first of Best Buy online and understand what unit they offer for this connectivity and how it's installed. Please advise! I'd like to do this within a week... I miss having iPod connectivity!! Chris
The 2005 Volvo XC90 DOES NOT have an auxiliary input, nor can you add one without an accessory like the GROM MST. That's the only way to plug in an ipod or anything to an XC90

3200 lumens is pretty bright. Epson would recommend you not have direct daylight for optimal use... I can tell you this projector works VERY well with direct overhead lighting, and it keeps up with sunlight okay. It's definitely not like the older deal breaker projectors that required the blinds closed.

I want to use HUE lights with this. Can I buy a 2nd Google Home for my 2nd floor so both floors can access Home to turn off/on lights? If my phone (synced to Home) is out of the house, will voice activation still work for the lights?
Google home will let you group and name the lights for each room. I don't believe they are intended to be used overlapping though. In fact you might confuse it with more than one connected to the same google account. The Google Home works without your phone at home, since it connects directly to the HUE account as well as the internet and wifi directly.
