Consistently Adds One Bar!
on September 19, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
I was skeptical at first of this product - how will it magically repeat and boost my cell phone signal with NO connection to my cell phone. Turns out they've done an expert job with all the pieces in this kit and it works. Not only that it works WELL! Keep in mind there are limitations to this kind of tech - cellular radio signals are mostly line of sight, which means if there's something between you and the tower, or some kind of obstacle, this isn't going to overcome that, but it may help. I find this kit to be the equivalent of being able to stand on the roof and hold my phone over my head and see how many bars I get.
The pieces in the box are smartly labeled steps 1 thru 5. Everything has well made cables and connectors and the order of things makes sense for assembling the pieces needed inside and outside the car separately, as well as plenty (maybe too much) cable for each piece. The power adapter also has a USB port on it so you're not completely giving up your power port when you plug it in. The main unit is designed to be stashed somewhere (under the seat, in the glove box, etc) so it can be hidden. The cradle is spring loaded, instead of the ratchet adjustment I would have expected, but It seemed to hold on to my iPhone 7 just time in a case. The Cradle is a neat little piece of technology in itself - it's designed to use a version of the popular magnetic vent mounts, and it comes with one. It also has a power indicator light that glows white so you know when the device is active. A nice little indicator for a passive booster like this. The cradle itself is actually low profile enough that you can bring the phone to your ear and talk when your phone is docked in the cradle i thought this was a nice touch.
As far as signal boosting goes this thing consistently added one bar, and sometimes two. It wasn't earth shattering by any means, but there were cases when I used it that it meant the difference between 1xrtt and 3g, or 3G and LTE.
I think the price point is a little high for what you get, and I found myself wishing that a semi-permanent power cable had been included since this is definitely designed for longer term use. WeBoost does sell a number of compatible accessories for it, but of course that's above and beyond what you get in the box.
Overall it does what it's advertised to do, consistently and well. When you need added signal, you NEED more bars, just like this device gives you. I'm going to try it in a semi permanent installation in an RV next, which is where I think i'll use it the most, and also test it with a wireless hotspot to see how it helps my internet.

Double Sided prints, Scan to the app, Instant Ink
on August 25, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
This printer has it all for a home unit! I have gone through quite a few printers in the past as it seems these days that ink is the same price as the printer itself... but HP appears to be trying to change that.
Setup: This thing is a slides out of the box all ready to go, after removing tape from a few places, including inside the paper tray, and loading it. Ink goes in easy and is quite self explanatory. Hp's new app based setup worked wonderfully, and I was able to get the printer connected to my wifi with zero issues from the touch screen. I appreciated that the app based setup gave me multiple options from my computer as to installing the full feature driver or the basic feature driver, as well as installing an OCR suite for recognizing text in scans. Gettin the app setup and running was easy once the printer was connected and it found my printer right away.
Print Quality: the print quality coming out of this machine rivals what I've got for color laser at work, and the photo quality was spot on. All my test prints blew me away with color.
Ink: The idea of HPs Instant Ink is intriguing to me. Consider it something like Subscribe and Save but for printer ink. You get a deal on your ink if you set up an account and let the printer order it for you You choose the duty cycle (how many pages you print a month on average) and when you reach 2x your duty cycle left in the ink cartridge, it will order more. Now for those of use that print one coupon a month and then ALL of your christmas cards in November.. this might not be the best option, but for someone who prints more regularly than this, it's a godsend. Part of this could be stemming from HPs lawsuit attempting to block third parties from filling cartridges, but if the competition results in cheaper ink, I'm all for it.
Controls:At the printer itself, there is only one physical power button and the rest is controlled by a small color touch screen. Even though this thing is tiny, it manages to get the job done. It takes a second to get used to it's lag and using the keyboard with the keys that expand, but overall it does a good job of connecting you to the printer/scan/fax controls.
App: The app on the iphone blew me away. You can fully control printing and scanning from your phone/tablet and it will interact with your device, like scanning to the app, where you could scribble your signature on a document in and email it, all using your phone. This is revolutionary in getting paper scans or prints to work with your phone, rather than requiring a computer as an intermediary.
Features: I'm boggled that these devices still include fax, but it's there. I guess the government does still deal in some fax only situations. The scanner includes an automatic document feeder that holds up to 50 sheets. One thing I lamented was that it doesn't appear to be able to scan double sided even though it can PRINT double sided. Front usb ports and card readers for camera cards as well as the fairly easy to use touch screen give you lots of options.
Overall: This printer has a good combination of app control, on board controls and features. It is replacing my main unit at home, and i am going to give the HP Instant Ink a try.

Baseline Wireless Gaming Mouse
on August 21, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
This mouse is essentially the newest iteration of Logitech's industry baseline gaming mice. This newest version has a few tricks up it's sleeve, including compatibility with the upcoming PowerPlay mat, which isn't out as of this review.
Feel:
For a wireless mouse of this price point I would have expected the plastics to be brushed or feel a little more lux than they do, but it has a standard issue mouse feel The optional weight gives it some heft which is nice, and without it it's VERY easy to almost send skittering across your desk. The buttons are solid and I've always liked Logitech's tilting/clickable scroll wheel design over others. On board button for adjusting DPI is handy, but not something you'll probably use a lot. This is DEFINITELY a right handed mouse with absolutely zero ambidexterity to it. Not a drawback, just something to note that lefty's will want to look elsewhere.
Wireless:
I didn't notice any lag with this mouse via wireless, regardless of the DPI I set it to. It keeps a solid connection and it seems Logitech has been in the wireless peripheral game long enough to have it down. I wish at this price it also had bluetooth so I could forgo the Logi dongle, but that's part of the reason for the 3 stars.
Charging/Cable:
I was tickled to see that they've finally figured out when your mouse battery goes dead it's probably because you're USING it and you'll want to resume using it. This version's newest cable and connector place the cable in the most sensible place on the front of the mouse in case you DO continue using it corded when the battery charges.
Overall:
This version is similar to those that have come before it. Solid improvements in DPI and Wireless make it a solid choice. I think there are others on the market with more wow, but you can't go wrong with this one. Especially if you manage to find it on sale. I'm curious to see how the functionality expands with the upcoming PowerPlay mat.

Simple Effective Battery

This battery is the standard that comes with the Phantom four, four pro and pro +. Smartly this battery is sized so that you can fly with it - they do make a larger capacity battery that you CANNOT take on an airplane due tot the sizes of the cells. I did all the research to fly with my drone before I discovered that they had wisely chosen this.
These things work!

Smokeless is Legit! Lets me grill year round!
on August 9, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
from Minneapolis, MN, USA
I was dubious at first with the claims of being smokeless and for use indoors, but they're not kidding! It took a little getting used to the fact that I couldn't adjust the temperature - once I Started to treat it like a medium-high gas grill all the time, my results improved. That means you have to be careful what kind of liquids/butter/oils end up on the grilling surfaces (that might negate the smokeless part) but the end result is so similar to a bbq grilled meal it's stunning. I wish the grill size was just a little larger, but the size is perfectly suited to storage and being an indoor appliance. Between the removable surface and the lower drip tray, Philips makes this thing easy to clean. I foresee using this to have grilled food well into the winter months when I cannot/will not use my outdoor gas grill.

Lightweight Travel mouse with some tradeoffs
on July 17, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
The features on this thing rock - ability to connect to three devices, ability to connect to bluetooth OR a logitech unified receiver, ability to track on surfaces other mice can't; like glass or dark tabletops. All of those stack up to make this a very nice portable option.
The size is a little small feeling in the hand, especially for someone who uses an ergonomic mouse at their desktop. It also has a built in rechargeable battery, which is counter productive in my mind for a portable mouse. It DOES have a charging plug in and for once they're placed the port in the RIGHT place where if you're using the mouse plugged in to charge, it's coming right off the front of the mouse as if it's wired. This is a nice little touch.
Overall this one is decent and it's going in my travel laptop bag - it's nice and portable but not my everyday mouse. I'd look to Logitech's other darkfield mice for tracking on all kinds of surfaces that have a larger feel in the hand to replace my everyday mouse.

Amazing combination of wireless and solid sound
on July 9, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
I was apprehensive of these headphones at first, since I expect anything in this price range to come with larger ear cups and active noise cancelling. I was more than pleasantly surprised with what I found and I've become a HUGE fan!
Construction/Build:
The band has a metal base with both metal rotation mechanism and metal hinges for folding the ear cups. After a number of folds/uses these seem to be sturdy and like they're going to hold up well. The cups themselves are covered in a durable (leather?) material and don't annoy my skin or make me too uncomfortable with prolonged use. The buttons are a little confusing to use without looking, but have raised edges and a nice shape to them for manipulating without looking if you remember which one does what. The color is very subtle and looks wonderful!
Sound:
These things sound amazing. There are the usual bluetooth hiccups and the typical hollow effect that comes from reproducing deep bass using tiny drivers, but these are at the top end of that range. Sound reproductions are true and clear. I listened to an album I've only ever rocked out to in the car, and I noticed a number of subtleties in at least two songs that I've never heard before. Of course the tight fit of the ear cups and the wonderful job that it does it blocking out other sounds without active noise cancelling goes a long ways to hearing those subtleties as well.
Battery/Connecting:
Connecting was a breeze, the usual bluetooth pairing that you might be used to already. The battery life seems to be as reported after three full discharges/recharges I'm getting close to the 20 hour mark every time. I love how quickly these things detect no sound and power off, so that they aren't draining the battery unnecessarily.
Overall:
I was surprised to see that there is also a microphone built into this headset, the first time I activated Siri while wearing them. I then tried them with a phone call and the other party reported clear sound from me. The subtle screen printing of the "L" and "R" on the insides of the ear cups is a nice touch. The included case is durable, if a little awkward to figure out at first - you fold one side and then half fold the other. I love these things. They are my new go to for reference sound in my home, and I'll be telling everyone.

Inexpensive wireless in-ear buds
on July 5, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
These in ear buds are a much cheaper alternative for someone who's looking for something like Bose or Beats wireless phones without the cost.
Construction:
The wire connecting the buds feels a little thin and the controls are mounted to a largish button cluster along with the battery and charging connection. The battery being enclosed in the buttons makes it feel a little heavier than I would have expected and it pulls on the earphones. The buds themselves are heavy with obvious magnets where the drivers are. I appreciated the options for both the surrounds and the "ear fins".
Sound:
These sound pretty decent for their price and size. Lows suffer, but that's to be expected in this size of headphone.
Battery Life: battery on these buds won't get you all day full time use, but they will get you most of the way. I observed close to the advertised 6 hours of battery life with use.
Pros: Inexpensive, good sound and value for price
Cons: Thin connecting wire, heavy battery/button cluster
Overall:
I think these are a good alternative to MUCH pricier headphones. I'm pleased with the sound and value of sound that comes from most JAB products I've used.

Big Sound!
on June 30, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
This thing booms! I 'm a big fan of the recent trend of making electronics splashproof and giving them some durability.
Build:
The Nyne Rebel is well made and a little heavier than it looks. The soft touch buttons feel solid and the battery LED indicators are nice and bright. I DO wish they were on the front and not hidden on the back, but at least there IS a battery indicator. Carrying handle feels well attached and speaker grills are made from heavy mesh that won't easily push in and damage the speakers.
Use:
I paired with my iPhone no problems. This speaker does have the option to use NFC, which is handy. Charging port is easy enough to plug in and feels solid.
Sound:
This thing is LOUD for it's size. I didn't think there was much to their distinction of this speaker being a "2.1" device, but it does matter that is internally applies a high pass filter tot he sounds coming from the woofer and a low pass filter tot he sounds coming from the mids and tweeters. When placed on a solid surface you can really hear resounding bass coming from the speaker. Battery life seemed close to the reported 8 hours from my use so far. I also liked that there was a charging port for my phones so I don't have to carry a separate battery backup if we're out on the boat all day. Sounds are not quite as good as any of my Bose stuff, but audibly better than my Jambox.
I like this for a portable speaker that goes everywhere with you including on the boat, the pontoon, or the beach. well made and sturdy it should last for a long time with decent sound in a splashproof package.

Better than average kids headphones
on June 12, 2017
Posted by: dronedad
I have gone through a significant number of kids headphones in my house, between a 10 year old, a 6 year old, and a 2 year old, they are hard on headphones, both in the car and otherwise.
These are holding up to their abuse quite well and I they are well made!
I like the smaller earcup design. This limits the comfort zone for the users - my 2 year old is perfect in them, 6 year old doesn't mind them, and the 10 year old thinks they're too small, which is okay since she's out of their recommended range anyway.
I like the folding action - this is the number one most common cause of crushed/destroyed headphones in our family. The folding action causes you to have to constantly adjust the length of the sides of the earphones, but this is a small tradeoff.
Decent construction, well made earcups, adjustable sizes with a snug fit, inline volume controls with volume limiting, these check all my boxes for a good pair of kids headphones.

iPod connector for 2005 Volvo XC90?

One of my collegues at work mentioned that he had Best Buy install an iPod adaptor to his 2004 Volvo XC90 (problematic for most of us owners as the radio user fiber optics, MOST system). I have a 2005 XC90, but the radios are the same. He had thought it ran him about $130 when he Best Buy did it a year or two ago. I have a local Best Buy that I can bring my car to and have this done as well, but I thought I would ask the question first of Best Buy online and understand what unit they offer for this connectivity and how it's installed. Please advise! I'd like to do this within a week... I miss having iPod connectivity!! Chris
The 2005 Volvo XC90 DOES NOT have an auxiliary input, nor can you add one without an accessory like the GROM MST. That's the only way to plug in an ipod or anything to an XC90

Display work or school presentations on this Epson projector. It produces 3200 lumens of white and color brightness for vivid images, and its easy setup lets you customize specifications in minimum time. This Epson projector is equipped with an HDMI port, so you can connect it to your computer or HD device.

how is the picture with this projector with daylight in the room?

3200 lumens is pretty bright. Epson would recommend you not have direct daylight for optimal use... I can tell you this projector works VERY well with direct overhead lighting, and it keeps up with sunlight okay. It's definitely not like the older deal breaker projectors that required the blinds closed.

Simplify your everyday life with the Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Use voice commands to enjoy music, get answers from Google and manage everyday tasks. Google Home is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and can control compatible smart devices such as Chromecast or Nest."

I want to use HUE lights with this. Can I buy a 2nd Google Home for my 2nd floor so both floors can access Home to turn off/on lights? If my phone (synced to Home) is out of the house, will voice activation still work for the lights?

Google home will let you group and name the lights for each room. I don't believe they are intended to be used overlapping though. In fact you might confuse it with more than one connected to the same google account. The Google Home works without your phone at home, since it connects directly to the HUE account as well as the internet and wifi directly.
