Workable and decent computer headset
on October 17, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
With the sea change into zoom/teams/etc, we have all had to learn what works for us. I find that I prefer not to have things on my ears, but sometimes my environment isn’t conducive to that. Also as someone who is neurodivergent, I can tell you that lag from a headset is a terrible experience for me. I appreciate that this headset can be wired or wireless. The Bluetooth connected up easily enough, but the lag makes it almost unusable for calls, as I often find myself accidentally interrupting or talking over others. This won’t cut it for long term use. Wired is a different story however, and it does help to have a full headset for louder environments. The ear pads and construction of this headset are on the budget side, although the ear pads themselves are not uncomfortable. I personally don't care for the 90s Walkman exposed metal vibe, but it might work for others well enough. I find after testing these I would prefer to use a speakerphone or a nicer/less laggy pair of wireless ones, rather than have myself tethered by thin and somewhat short headphone cables.

High quality iPhone cable
on October 11, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
I’m almost wondering if the current pro move is to
Stop buying iPhone cables and start buying usb c cables with lightning adapters… that being said, this cable rivals some of my more prized and longer lived cables in use from companies like Anker. Some very high quality points here include the large over mold on the cable ends to relieve strain, and the braided cable shielding. This cable doesn’t appear to have done anything different in terms of the lightning connector itself and that seems to always be my failure point, when the positive power pin gets burned and or corroded. The braided cable shield feels nice in the hands and slides through your fingertips while still protecting the cable from pinching and breakage. As someone who has purchased a large number of Anker branded cables for their reliability in the past I feel this one to be a highly comparable contender for my primary and daily use cable. Time will tell if the durability exists and I’m curious to see what Best Buy might consider for any claims on these cables.

Very solid Bluetooth headset
on October 11, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
Very solid Bluetooth headset. I work for an organization that does primarily Microsoft Teams and we use it a LOT post Covid. My biggest factors are battery life, low latency, and sound quality. This headset ALMOST kills all of those. As someone who is somewhat neurodivergent, the low latency is a problem for me, and I do sometimes catch myself accidentally interrupting others due to the lag on this headset. I’ve tested it while directly hardwired to a very fast internet connection, so I know that’s not the primary factor. The construction here is very high quality and it’s quite comfortable. I have noticed that regardless of the apparent power status, the mute light will remain on if you leave this headset muted. This will eventually run the battery dead even though the headset appears to be turned off. I’m going to dig more into it to see if I can adjust this settings but this might be a quirk that keeps me from making this my daily use if they’re going to be dead constantly. Otherwise these are very well made and have high sound quality and I recommend them.

With a power capacity of 288Wh, the Jackery Explorer 300 Plus Portable Power Station is made for camping, remote work, and road trips which can power small electrical devices like drones, laptop, phone, camera and so on. In the meanwhile, it's a perfect indoor emergency power source for TV, light, laptop etc. The updated multifunctional outputs, including one pure sine wave AC outlet(300W), two 100W type C PD ports, and a 15W USB-A port, and a car port help you power five smart devices simultaneously.

Compact solid state power
on September 24, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
Let me start by saying that I LOVE jackery, and own a few of their products. They are harnessing the latest developments in GaN and other technologies, as this particular power "generator" is smaller than the one I own that is a 240wh one, and this one is clocking in at 300wh. The flat top and the folding handle are also nice improvements. I've seen some designs that forgo the 12v charger, for more USB ports, or the input port, and this particular device still has the 12v "cigarette lighter" port. I would have preferred more USB to be honest. I also appreciate that it can now charge, and charge MUCH faster via a direct connection to 110v mains. The included power plug is the same standard connector as all computer power supplies, so if you misplace it, it's easy to replace. I do NOT care for this product being branded as a solar generator, when there is NOTHING solar about it, unless I purchase the optional solar panel. This branding/naming is a little weird. Even though I acknowledge that there isn't a good name for these in-between rechargeable battery/solid state generator products. Lastly, I appreciate that a 4mm to usb C adapter was included, which closed the loop for me on "where the heck do I even plug my solar panel into" as I happen to own one. This seems a bit unwieldy, and again I would have preferred a built in dedicated input port, rather than some multi tasking usb c ports. Definitely smaller and an upgrade from what's available, with some quirks.

Great Budget Gaming Laptop
on September 9, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
The MSI Bravo with the newest mid level Ryzen chip and Geforce graphics is an excellent entry into the mid level, portable gaming world. As I've come to expect from gaming laptops, they have a similar footprint to many of the ultrabooks on the market today, but to accommodate the graphics, memory, cooling, etc, they are THICK. This one manages to cram in all its thickness and still not tip the scales too badly at 5 lbs. The backlit keyboard and IPS are a minimum for entry into this class, and the Bravo does both fairly well. If you like subtle, this is not the gaming laptop for you. While the design isn't striking, it is busy. There are lots of carbon-fiber esque decorations and motifs, as well as patterns and decorations on the lit keys. I do like the different backlight on the WASD keys specifically. The IPS display is bright and consistently lit, with a speedy 144hz refresh rate. No auto brightness on this particular model, but if you're like me, I find myself turning that off anyway. Somewhat off putting is the choice in ports - with 3 USB A ports, and only one USB C port. The single USB C port isn't meant for charging, and the laptop comes with a separate charger with a barrel plug, which is another strike against it. Additionally the single USB C port is buried in a bezel, meaning not all your devices are likely to fit that port. Included ethernet and HDMI are on the plus side. The trackpad is smaller than I'm used to and can be finnicky if you're resting your palm in the "wrong" place for it. This put me off enough times that I consistently use an external bluetooth mouse. The integrated number pad is a plus, but also seems to force manufacturers to push the trackpad to the left, which isn't great for me as a right handed person. Hardware performance is TOP NOTCH, and that's probably really what you're looking at this laptop for. AMDs newest mid level Ryzen runs cool here, and the Geforce RTX 4050 is one of the best mid range, laptop based graphics engines on the market at the time of this writing.
The usual bloatware and fan/speed/cooling control software is included by MSI, but nothing disappointing or spectacular. Windows is... windows. So you know what you're getting into there.
Gaming performance matched my hardware observation, with games like Cyberpunk running in high FPS modes and looking gorgeous. No complaints there.
Overall this is a mid range portable gaming laptop with somewhat uninspiring design, but plenty of hardware to back up it's claims. A few quirks, and there always seem to be a few in this range. The lack of USB C factory charging is borderline a dealbreaker for me. If that's not a problem for you, there are really no other barriers to entry here.

Best Non Monitored Security System on the Market
on September 8, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
I LOVE simplisafe, and the newest iteration of their wireless, home installed security system is more of the same. Only slight improvements to the keypad and base, over the last version. The keypad serves as the brains of the whole system and you use it in a "remote" sense to walk around and program and name sensors. Then it goes onto a wall mount for semi permanent mounting. the new additions of indoor and outdoor cameras sweeten the deal. The motion sensor and the window/door magnetic sensors are fairly typical. Simplisafe's "standard white plastic" vibe is unchanged here, and it usually works. I find myself thinking that the magnetic sensors could be made quite a bit more low profile, but the larger area helps them stick to non-flat or non-standard surfaces better, so I suppose I'll take it. the motion sensor is designed for angled down or in a corner use, and can be configured in the keypad to enable or set off alarms. The base station is the hub for all the things, and connects to the internet. This is also where your sounds come from - surprisingly I find it REALLY useful to hear audibly when my doors are opened in other parts of the house. The base station is also where a battery backup goes, should you chose that, to keep your system operating correctly without internet. While SimpliSafe offers and would like you to choose their monitored services, this setup works fairly well without them. The setup and use of the app and connecting to the cameras is not as smooth as a ring or a Eufycam, but also isn't impossible. Here lies my biggest complaint so far - I dislike being split between ecosystems, and Simplisafe having some cameras, but not the number of options that exist out there like a doorbell or other security cameras, means you're likely hopping between apps to check things. That also leaves me with a base station for my Simplisafe and for my doorbell/camera setup because both have valid needs for alerts. I wish Simplisafe would integrate with others or defer the cameras.
Overall this is a VERY well made system, and well thought out, and I highly recommend it.

Great upgrade from Liberty 3, noise cancelling!
on August 15, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
As someone who has owned previous Anker Liberty buds, I recommend these to anyone and everyone who wants noise cancelling and a solid fit and finish, but not Fruit Products. The Anker brand has come a long way in the last 5 years, and this is one example of the products they are bringing to market. The noise cancelling works quite well, and I've been using these buds for teams meetings on my laptop to test that out. There is some bluetooth lag, but not offensively so, and not more than other wireless buds. Battery life is decent, and the battery enclosed in the charging case giving it that extra boost when they are docked is always appreciated. The case is a bit of a conundrum.. it seems in their quest to make something different than airpods, they have crafted a new design, and I'm not sure if it works well quite yet. The case DOESN'T actually click or lock shut, but button is in a position where it would "unlock" the case if it did. I find myself pushing the pair button and expecting the case to pop open, or pushing it when attempting to open the case and I don't mean to. This is a little weird, but so far it works okay. the case does do a great job of keeping the buds captive until you're ready to pull them out,a nd these earbuds are far less likely to go skittering across the pavement like your airpod pros are, if dropped from your pocket. I like Anker's included tips, and seem to always be able to find a good fit. I would recommend these earbuds.

In competitive gaming, every frame matters. Introducing Acer's KA242Y gaming monitor - the Full HD resolution monitor that can keep up with your game play. Through AMD FreeSync technology, the game’s frame rate is determined by your graphics card, not the fixed refresh rate of the monitor, giving you a serious competitive edge. Plus, users can enjoy comfortable viewing experience while gaming via flicker-less and low dimming display. The design saves space on your desk and lets you place multiple monitors side by side to build a seamless big-screen display.

Excellent monitor, thin bezel, takes up more space
on July 26, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
I picked up this monitor to replace a setup on a shallow desk, and this turned out to not be the correct application for that purpose. This monitor is great in most respects, adjustable included stand, ACTUAL vesa mounting holes/plate for use on other stands, nicely placed physical buttons, VERY thin bezel, but this monitor is shockingly beefy in depth. So much so that I couldn't place it on the desk and slide it back far enough for it to be usable. It also wasn't wall mountable, with approximately a 5-inch standoff when placed against the wall. I'm surprised at Acer for making this monitor svelte in most other areas, but then failing at this one. Maybe they know we remember the CRT days, when you had to turn your monitor so it could stick off the desk and be able to place your keyboard and mouse in front of it. HDMI and VGA connectivity are fairly standard, on screen controls are easy enough to use. Maximum brightness was more than enough to use for every day use in a lit room. But I keep coming back to the combination of thick panel and thin bezel making this one only 3 stars for me.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Bose Levels up their portable PA / Sound System
on May 31, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
The Bose S1 Pro+ (plus) is a lighter weight, battery powered portable public address and sound system, and updates from their previous model (minus the plus) that is getting a little long in the tooth. This sound system is VERY app heavy, as almost all of the adjustments can be or must be made on the app connected to and controlling the system, rather than with physical controls. With lots of options for connectivity to microphones and other devices, the S1 Pro+ is checking lots of boxes there. Line ins, wireless, bluetooth, XLR and USB C are all accounted for. I love the size and weight of this setup for someone looking to travel with their system, carry it with them on public transit, or have it take up less space. Physical controls where it counts, such as volume on individual sources, and bluetooth pairing, and the rest combined into the app. Bose does a VERY good job with their app development, and I have zero reservations with their handling of this. Personally I may have some anxiety about not being able to adjust the settings if my phone goes dead or becomes disconnected, and that's usually when I appreciate physical controls the most. I've not had a chance to push the battery life to the limit yet, and usually will default to plugging in if I can help it. The sound is typical of what you'd expect from Bose, so I'm not even sure I need to get into that part of it. Their speakers are fantastic, what more can you say?
Overall this is very well made, and an excel level up from the previous model of S1 Pro, with new features that justify some of the cost, and delivering solid sound and connectivity that you know and expect from Bose!

New AMD speed and THIN!
on May 31, 2023
Posted by: dronedad
This is a wonderfully designed smaller form factor touch screen laptop. When I unboxed it I was first struck by how much this particular model looks like a certain apple product... which I'm not sure they were going for, and may be inadvertent, but in this case it's a compliment. There are a few bumps along the way that keep me from the 5 star review, but most of them aren't deal breakers unless you're seeking heavy computing power, or planning to use this laptop outside. Being one of the first laptops I've purchased with the newer AMD chip platform, I was seeking any reduction in performance from my work desktop machine to compare it to. This laptop was decently speedy with some noticeable drags in intense programs, but mostly not enough to push me back to a desktop computer. The battery life is quite good, and tries very hard to make up for any reduction in speed or graphics. Sporting AMDs newest GPU, I found graphics intensive tasks to balance out any CPU slow downs, as this sucker is quick! Places that I developed gripes included the lack of a headphone port, and the limit of 3 usb c ports. An interesting mix of some thunderbolt and some not, is interesting, but I appreciated that all 3 seem to charge. The inclusion of a usb-c to headphone adapter may have solved my woes with the missing jack. Heavy on the HP services in both the design and documents accompanying this laptop, there is a dedicated support key that will connect you with HP services that can be subscribed to. I found this to be a little buggy, and I'm not sure exactly who the target demographic is. Probably someone who is likely to bring a computer into a repair shop, to redirect them to HP instead, I can see this being very useful for. Truthfully I hope to NOT need support on a laptop right after setting it up, so perhaps the one month trial is a little short sighted. Lastly the screen is a little bit of a letdown. Both the resolution and brightness were less than I hoped for, and you might struggle to use this laptop in sunlit situations.
Overall this laptop is well made, and delivers solid performance both CPU, GPU and memory. The few hardware quirks are more considerations than they are deal breakers, and I would recommend this laptop to anyone looking for something in this size range, while understanding the caveats.

iPod connector for 2005 Volvo XC90?

One of my collegues at work mentioned that he had Best Buy install an iPod adaptor to his 2004 Volvo XC90 (problematic for most of us owners as the radio user fiber optics, MOST system). I have a 2005 XC90, but the radios are the same. He had thought it ran him about $130 when he Best Buy did it a year or two ago. I have a local Best Buy that I can bring my car to and have this done as well, but I thought I would ask the question first of Best Buy online and understand what unit they offer for this connectivity and how it's installed. Please advise! I'd like to do this within a week... I miss having iPod connectivity!! Chris
The 2005 Volvo XC90 DOES NOT have an auxiliary input, nor can you add one without an accessory like the GROM MST. That's the only way to plug in an ipod or anything to an XC90

Display work or school presentations on this Epson projector. It produces 3200 lumens of white and color brightness for vivid images, and its easy setup lets you customize specifications in minimum time. This Epson projector is equipped with an HDMI port, so you can connect it to your computer or HD device.

how is the picture with this projector with daylight in the room?

3200 lumens is pretty bright. Epson would recommend you not have direct daylight for optimal use... I can tell you this projector works VERY well with direct overhead lighting, and it keeps up with sunlight okay. It's definitely not like the older deal breaker projectors that required the blinds closed.

Simplify your everyday life with the Google Home, a voice-activated speaker powered by the Google Assistant. Use voice commands to enjoy music, get answers from Google and manage everyday tasks. Google Home is compatible with Android and iOS operating systems, and can control compatible smart devices such as Chromecast or Nest."

I want to use HUE lights with this. Can I buy a 2nd Google Home for my 2nd floor so both floors can access Home to turn off/on lights? If my phone (synced to Home) is out of the house, will voice activation still work for the lights?

Google home will let you group and name the lights for each room. I don't believe they are intended to be used overlapping though. In fact you might confuse it with more than one connected to the same google account. The Google Home works without your phone at home, since it connects directly to the HUE account as well as the internet and wifi directly.
