Nice fitness tracker that is also a watch.
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
I've used fitness trackers before, but this is the first one I've seen that looks like an actual watch. I've been retired for several years and haven't worn a watch since I retired. It took a bit of getting used to, but now that I've worn it for a week or so I barely notice it. Since I'm out of the habit of wearing a watch I rarely look at for the actual time, just to use it for the fitness tracking features.
Setup was easy, just charge the watch with the included cord and cradle and download the app to my phone. You can do a lot of functions with the watch itself, but I prefer to do most of them with the app.
The first day or two the watch is calibrating itself and finding your "norms." After that you can start to see patterns and deviations, if any. I especially like the sleep diagnostics, telling you how long and well you sleep and any interruptions. In addition to sleep, the watch counts your steps, heart rate, oxygen saturation and can do on-demand electrocardiograms. For women, it even tracks menstrual
health. All of this data can be compiled into a pdf document for your medical records.
The watch itself is sleek, but the included band is rather cheap and rubbery. You can do a lot of tracking with the app or if you want more features, you can subscribe to Withings+.
The documentation says the watch battery charge should last for 30 days, but after a little over a week mine is down to 57 percent.

Great soundbar with subwoofer and rear speakers
on October 29, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
This Samsung soundbar with surround speakers is very easy to set up, especially if you have a Samsung television to pair it with. I have a Samsung smart TV that's less than a year old, so the tech works well together. I just had to connect the included HDMI cable from the eARC plug on the TV to the eARC plug on the soundbar and the TV recognized the soundbar. I selected it as the default sound source and that was that.
I plugged in the subwoofer, which connects wirelessly to the soundbar automatically, then set up the rear speakers, which are also wireless. The soundbar comes with a wireless receiver module, which you set up in the rear of your TV room. Plug the included rear speakers into the wireless receiver module and you're ready to use them. You push a couple of button on the soundbar remote (as listed in the directions) and the rear speakers are activated.
There are a couple of benefits of having a Samsung TV and soundbar. First, you can use one remote to control both. Once it was set up, you can control everything from the TV remote. I even had an old Samsung TV remote from a different TV and was able to use that remote to control the TV and soundbar. I actually prefer using the old remote, because it has bigger buttons and is easier to use. Once the TV and soundbar are on, I can generally use my Roku remote to control what I watch and the volume level, not needing to touch the Samsung remote until I want to turn the TV and soundbar off.
The second benefit is a feature called Q Symphony. With the Samsung TV and soundbar, you can link the sound from the TV and soundbar to play at the same time, giving you more speakers. You do this by switching the input on the soundbar to D.IN, and the soundbar has to be connected to the TV by either HDMI or an optical cable.
It is a fairly large soundbar, 43 ½ inches wide and 4 ½ inches deep.
The sound is good and crisp, so listening to dialogue in movies and TV is clear. That's one of the reasons I prefer having a soundbar or other external speakers rather than using just TV speakers.

Wireless camera that runs on battery power
on October 25, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
Ring is a very well-known name in the security camera business, mainly for their doorbell cams. This is a portable, wireless camera that runs on battery, only needing to be charged periodically. I've been using mine for 5 days (with lots of foot traffic in the area where the camera was, so lots of alerts and videos) and the power level was only down to 88 percdent.
You can mount the camera with the included stand, either having the stand on the bottom, like if you were going to mount it on a railing or fence or putting the stand on the back of the camera so you can mount it to a wall or door frame. I didn't permanently mount it at first, just setting it on a post on my railing, so I could try a few locations before I decided. If not permanently mounted, it could get blown over by wind, so be warned.
Setting up and charging the camera itself was easy. They include a USB cable to charge with. You have to download the Ring app to control and setup the camera. That was a little difficult, since they set it up with the app, then want to set it up with your phone number and then want to link it to your Amazon account (since Ring is owned by Amazon).
Once the app was set up and the camera placed, it worked fine. It can notify you when there is an alert, you can select a lot of options on when and how you're notified and the level of sensitivity for the camera. The camera video and audio quality is excellent, even with night vision.
One thing I don't like is that you can't save videos or review them later unless you have the Ring Protect Plan (a monthly or yearly subscription fee). Without the Plan, you are limited to real-time alerts and viewing what is happening live. You can also talk to someone over the camera. I think it would be better to have some type of storage on the camera (micro-USB card, etc) for people who don't want to pay a monthly or yearly subscription.

Light wireless & wired headphones with microphone
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
These wireless (and sometimes wired) over-ear headphones are great for music, gaming, teleconferencing and anything else you'd want to use headphones and a microphone for. They are light and comfortable, with enough padding to stay comfortable for long use. They come in black or white.
You can connect to either a PC or a PS5 with the included USB dongle, which has a switch on it for either PC or PS5. You can download Sony's Inzone Hub software, but I plugged the USB into a few different computers (desktop and laptops) and it worked right away without the software. The dongle is a bit large in my opinion, basically the same size as a USB memory stick/thumb drive. I've seen other dongles that are quite smaller, but since it has to work with PC and PS5, it might have to be large.
You can also use these headphones as wired headphones with the included audio cable, with any device that has a headphone jack (increasingly uncommon with phones and other devices as time goes on). I can see doing this with a laptop when you don't want the rather large USB dongle sticking out in a crowded situation, such as on an airplane or other mass transit.
The sounds is good and clear, whether gaming or listening to music, movies or TV. The over-ear headphones mask a lot of external noise, which is a plus if you are using them around other people or in a noisy environment. There are two volume controls, one for general volume and one to adjust the volume balance of gaming and gaming chat.
The microphone is pretty standard and works well. It is on the left side of the headset. When not in use you lift it out of the way, which mutes it. Lowering it enables it.
I was kind of surprised that these don't offer Bluetooth connectivity, but there are plenty of other headphones that do. Since these are primarily targeted for PC and PS5 gaming, they evidently decided to skip Bluetooth.

Gas-like performance without all the drawbacks of gas. That’s what the Worx 40V Power Share 14” Cordless Chainsaw gives you. We’ve doubled the volts of our standard Power Share tools and made a chainsaw powered by two 20V batteries. Double the run time and upgraded performance but still with cordless convenience and without the smell or expense of gasoline. We’re able to achieve this on account of the saw’s high-efficiency brushless motor. It’s more durable and uses less battery than a motor based around a brush design. It spins the 0.043” gauge chain, with a 3/8” pitch, at 26ft/s. So you’ve got all the power you need to perform every regular chainsaw job. Cut 26” diameter logs on the ground or 13” diameter trees that are still standing, for instance. Auto-tensioning and auto-oiling systems keep the bar and chain running at peak performance throughout the entire life of this tool. And on-board battery charge indicators, and oil-tank markings, let you know when you’ll need to recharge or refill the oil. Plus, the quick-stop chain brake adds an extra level of safety to this saw, so you’ll know you can always shut it down at a moment’s notice.

Easy-to-use quiet battery-powered chainsaw
on October 10, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
I've owned gas-powered and electric (corded) chainsaws and wanted to see how battery-powered chainsaws compared. I've never liked gas chainsaws for the simple reason that if you don't use them often, they're a pain to keep running and have to be cleaned pretty often. Plus you have to keep the gas and oil handy and fresh for use. Corded electric chainsaws are okay, but obviously you need to have a cord trailing you and a power source nearby.
I've been switching to battery-powered outdoor equipment, since batteries have gotten so much better recently. The Worx chainsaw comes with two 20-volt batteries that attach on both sides of the saw, combining for 40 volts of power (you have to use both all the time). The batteries have a push-button meter on them that lets you know how much power is remaining. It comes with a two-battery charger, so you can charge both batteries at once.
The saw was completely assembled in the box, so all I had to do was attach the batteries and add bar and chain oil (not included, but I had on hand from my previous chainsaw) and I was ready to go.
I had a few six-inch-thick limbs that had either fallen from trees in my yard or needed to be cut off trees. The chainsaw handled the limbs easily, with no issues. I cut the limbs up and pruned some other smaller branches that were too low to the ground. In all, I was using the chainsaw for a couple of hours off and on, and only used one-third of the charge.
One thing I like is that compared to a gas chainsaw, when you're not pulling the trigger mechanism, the battery chainsaw is off. With a gas chainsaw you would have to either let it idle or turn it off when not using it, then start it again. The battery chainsaw is also very quiet compared to a gas chainsaw.
The chain came off at one point when I was cutting. Putting the chain back on is a simple task, you turn the circular crank on the right side of the saw to take off the chain housing, put the blade back on and then re-tighten it. No tools necessary, which is nice, plus it makes for easy cleaning.
The Worx chainsaw is very safe, you can lock/unlock the saw with the chain brake bar on top. To start the saw after the chain brake is unlocked, you have to push a button on the side of the handle, then pull the trigger. You can release the side button after the trigger is pulled.

Comfortable mid-level Bluetooth headphones
on October 6, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
These headphones are what I would consider mid-range in terms of price and quality. Being a little more expensive than some headphones, they have a few more features, if those features are worth the extra price to you. JLab makes headphones and earbuds at different price points for different needs and uses.
These headphones are padded both on the earcups (which are on-ear) and on the headstrap. They are comfortable to wear for a long time, but are heavier than similar headphones I've had in the past.
There is no dedicated left or right for these headphones, since the boom mike rotates both ways. It just depends where you want the mike and the controls, which are on the same side as the mike. When not needed, the mike lifts out of the way and can also be muted with a button on the outside of that earcup. The end of the mike turns red when it's muted, which is in your field of view when it is lowered near your mouth.
This headset connects to your devices with Bluetooth. I was able to pretty easily connect with several devices, including Android phones, a Smart TV, a Windows desktop and a couple of Windows laptops. The only device that had any issues was the Windows desktop. Once connected to the desktop, if I moved around or even moved my head, the sound was interrupted. Since this only happened with one device, it likely was an issue with the desktop's Bluetooth. All the other devices had good sound even when across the room from the device.
This headset would benefit from more buttons, but since it's a small set, I can understand why they opted not to. The Power button turns the set on and off, answers/rejects calls, plays/pauses music, contacts Siri or Google and connects via Bluetooth. The length or number of presses of the Power button is what decides what you're doing, which can be confusing. I think most people would opt to control most things from their device rather than the headphones.
One nice inclusion is a USB-C to Auxiliary cable for connecting to the audio port of a device if it has one. I was able to plug in to my desktop, since the Bluetooth wasn't working very well with it and listen to music.
Using the headphones and boom mike for phone calls is easy once paired with your phone. The calls sound clear and I was told by people I spoke with that my voice was clear as well.
Charging is done with an included USB-C to legacy USB cable. Once charged, the headphones hold a charge for a long time, since I used it for a lot of music listening and TV watching and the charge hadn't gone down much at all.

Light headphones with a boom mike for work or play
on October 6, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
If you're looking for an inexpensive set of wireless headphones that can be used for work and entertainment, these just might be the set. JLab makes a full range of headphones and earbuds, so if this particular set doesn't meet your needs, check out their other models. I prefer headphones to earbuds, I don't really have any preference if the headphones are over-ear or on-ear. These happen to be on-ear and are pretty light and comfortable to wear for a long period of time.
One semi-complaint is that there isn't padding on the headstrap. Since I don't have any hair on top of my head, headphones with a padded strap are a preference for me. These aren't too bad though, since they're so light and there is a thin strip of rubberized material on the headstrap so that your head isn't on metal.
There is no dedicated left or right for this set, the boom mike rotates to either side, so you can have the mike on whichever side you want (or lift it up so it's out of the way if you're not using it).
Charging is done with an included USB-C to legacy USB cable. Once charged, the headphones hold a charge for a long time, since I used it for a lot of music listening and TV watching and was only down to 80 percent.

Small rechargeable remote control - 3 devices
on July 14, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
I've yet to find the perfect remote control that will control all three of my devices (TV, audio receiver and Roku) and be easy to use. Though I keep trying.
This RCA remote control is good because it's rechargeable, no batteries needed. Just plug it into a USB on a computer or power strip every once in a while with the included cable and it will stay charged.
It's a fairly small remote, maybe a bit too small and light. It's five and a half inches long and an inch and a half wide. It is only half an inch thick.
It has a TV button and a button meant for cable boxes or streamers. There's no dedicated button for audio equipment, you have to push two different buttons simultaneously to access audio, which is not ideal. The buttons are also fairly small and close together, which complicates things if you have large fingers or are trying to use it in the dark. It is not backlit, which can also be an issue.
I was able to program my Samsung TV very easily with the codes provided in the instruction materials. The same with my Roku, but not with my Denon audio receiver. I tried all the codes provided, none of them worked. You can also do the auto-programming, where it tries all the various codes available, but it still wouldn't program the audio receiver. I looked around on the RCA website and other sites for any additional help, but wasn't ever able to get it programmed.
I may use the remote in a different room where it works with all the equipment or maybe try a soundbar instead of my audio receiver in the living room.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great laptop with many features & ways to connect
on June 27, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
I've owned a few Dell laptops (and other brands) over the years and this model is a very good offering by Dell. This is definitely an around the house or office model, it's a bit large and heavy for traveling, with a 16-inch screen and weighing between 4 1/2 and 5 pounds. If you wanted to use it for traveling, it has everything you need.
The screen is very bright and clear, with the touch screen feature pretty much a necessity these days. People are accustomed to touching their phone and tablet screens, so I can't imagine many laptops without touch screens are big sellers. The keyboard is backlit, which to me is also a necessity, since I often use laptops in dark rooms.
The combination of Intel's newest generation i7 processor, 16 gigabytes of RAM and a 1 terabyte solid-state hard drive makes this a fast and pretty future-proof setup. About the only thing Dell skimped on was the integrated Intel graphics. If you're a gamer you'd want to get better graphics, but for casual gaming the Intel graphics are fine.
The laptop has quite a few ports, including HDMI for hooking up to a monitor or other AV equipment, two legacy USB ports, two Thunderbolt/USB-C ports, an SD card reader and a headphone port (something that is disappearing in many devices since Bluetooth headphones are popular).
One interesting feature is that the webcam has a built-in privacy shutter. When you're using the webcam you can open it, but when you're not you close it. A nice feature that keeps privacy-minded people from having to put a piece of tape over the camera.
The laptop comes in silver or dark blue, mine is silver. A nice change of pace from the traditional black laptop.

Great power strip with rotating outlets
on June 22, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
Many people don't put a lot of thought into the power strips they buy/use for their electronics. They buy the first/cheapest one they see at the store. As someone who has lost electronics to surges and bad power strips, I've learned the hard way to appreciate quality.
The PowerCurve24 is a fantastic power strip, for several reasons. First of all, the plug that goes into the power outlet is low profile and angled, so it can be behind a piece of furniture and not have to keep the furniture far away from the wall. The angle of the cord from the plug won't interfere with other plugs.
There are four electrical outlets, each of which can be rotated, in case anything being plugged into them is larger than normal (though normal today is large). Very often you have to use two conventional power strips to fit the various bricks formerly known as plugs, but with the rotating plugs you can make more things fit.
Also, there are four legacy USB ports, for plugging in phone chargers, power banks or anything else that uses an older USB cable.
The power cord for the power strip is 5 feet long and seems very sturdy.
As far as protection, it has an auto shutdown feature in case of power spikes and a resettable circuit breaker.
