Quiet humidifier, works very well
on May 26, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
We live in an area that typically has very low humidity, so we decided to get a humidifier. We have friends who have had various brands/models and said they helped a lot. This particular model is the large version, it also comes in a smaller version, in case you want to use it in a smaller room.
The HoMedics Ultrasonic Humidifier (large) looks nice and doesn't take up a lot of space (small footprint). You probably wouldn't want to put it in a high-traffic area, since it's tall and thin, might get knocked over by kids and/or pets.
I like that to add water it's a top-filling tank. Other humidifiers I've seen can be very complicated to fill. With this one just remove the tank cover, exposing the tank. Fill it with water (up to 1.4 gallons) and depending on your usage and settings, it can last up to 70 hours. It does have an auto-shutoff if the tank is empty. You can also set the timer to shut it off after 4, 8 or 12 hours.
You can set the humidifier to run continuously or set the humidity level in 5% increments from 35 to 55 percent. If you set a humidity level, the humidifier will shut off when the humidity in the room reaches that level. It will turn back on when the humidity drops 5% below the set level.
There is a tray in the bottom of the humidifier to add essential oils, if you choose to. They caution not to add any oils or other additives into the water tank, only the oil tray. Pads are included to put the oils on, which are then put in the tray.
If you have hard water, the humidifier can leave whitish dust on surfaces around the humidifier, which is the remains of the minerals in the water. They include a demineralization capsule, which lasts for 30-40 fills of the tank. You can purchase more capsules from HoMedics or use distilled water instead of tap water.
The humidifier is very quiet and puts out a fine mist when in operation. Because the mist spout is on top of the tank cover, you can choose which direction you want the mist to go by rotating the tank cover.
The unit seems to work quite well, though we were in a rainy period when we got it. I'm sure once our humidity drops back to its normal low, the humidifier will be greatly appreciated.

Great little speaker, good for travel & outdoors
on May 23, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
The Sony XB100 portable Bluetooth speaker is an updated version of the XB13. It's also similar to the XB23, but less than half the height. It's designed to fit in most cupholders, so you can take it with you in your car. It also has a strap, so you can hook it to a backpack, tent or pretty much whatever you want.
The XB100 is waterproof and dustproof, so it's perfect for any indoor or outdoor situations. The exterior is textured to make it easier to hold, though I think a slightly more rubbery or silicone finish would be better. The controls on the side are simple, the buttons are: power, Bluetooth, play/pause, and volume down and up.
The battery is rated to last up to 16 hours. I had it on and used it several times without having to recharge it. It has a USB-C charging port with a fairly short included cable (one end of the cable is USB-C to plug into the speaker, the other end is a standard legacy USB to plug into a computer or power station). The USB-C port on the speaker is only for charging, nothing else.
Connecting to a device is easy with Bluetooth. I connected the speaker to my computer, my Android phone and an older Android phone that I use to play music. Playing music sounds good, though a couple of times with songs with a lot of bass it produced a slight vibration. There is no sound adjustment possible except volume. You can use the Sony Music Center app to play music and it also tells you the amount of power left on the speaker.
The XB100 also has a built-in microphone, so you can use it as a hands-free device for phone calls. The nice thing about using this as a speakerphone is you don't get the delay or cutting off when two people try to speak at the same time.
As with other Sony portable speaker models, you can pair the XB100 with another XB100 for stereo sound. You can't connect it to any other models, however.

Great laptop, small size that's good for traveling
on May 13, 2023
Posted by: gnoel809
This is the perfect laptop for a student or a traveler. It's small, with a 14" touchscreen, and light (about 3.4 lbs). The version I got comes with 16GB of RAM and a 512MB solid state hard drive (both are upgradeable to 32GB and 1TB). It comes with Windows 11 and an AMD processor and graphics.
Battery life is very good. HP estimates it at 15 hours. I can't verify that but can say that I used it off and on for a few days and didn't need to recharge it.
The keyboard takes a bit of getting used to, the actual letter/number keys are bigger than I'm used to, but the actual keyboard is smaller. As with anything, the more you use it, the less of an issue it is. The keyboard is backlit, which is always a plus, especially if you're using the computer in a dark room.
One of the few complaints I have with this laptop is how few ports it has. It has three USB-C (newest generation) ports and that's it. Luckily you can get adapters to make older USB cables work with new USB-C ports. No headphone jack, so I guess Bluetooth is the way to go, unless they come out with USB-C headphones. No HDMI port, so if you want to connect to a screen, you have to use a program such as Tubecast or Miracast.
It comes in white or black, the one I have is black.
Overall, I highly recommend this laptop, especially if size and weight is a factor.

Good internet security suite for up to 10 devices.
on December 17, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I needed an internet / antivirus security suite to put on my phones, tablets and spare computers. I already had one for my main computers. Bitdefender Premium Security gives you protection for up to 10 devices, including PC's, Android, Mac and iOS.
Unfortunately I couldn't put Bitdefender on two of my older Android tablets, since Bitdefender only goes back to Android 5. My bad for not double-checking in advance, but I've encountered this issue before with older Android devices not being covered by AV software.
I put Bitdefender on our two current Android phones, a Windows 11 tablet and a Windows 11 laptop. It's a good suite of software, which of course has antivirus and also includes a VPN (virtual private network) which is great when you're traveling and may be using less-than-trustworthy internet connections. A password manager, as well as antispam, antitheft, ransomware protection, a firewall and file shredder are included.
The software is easy to use and depends on what type of device it's on. Obviously for a phone, it can screen spam calls and texts, something it wouldn't do on a computer. The software doesn't slow down the devices and doesn't have so many messages that it becomes annoying.
Overall a good AV security suite that will work on many devices and keep them safe.

Portable power unit/battery with multiple adapters
on November 18, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I had no idea that this type of portable power unit (battery) existed. The only ones I had ever seen were the small ones that people use to charge their phones or tablets on the go, or the stationary UPS units that people use for computers and other devices.
This portable unit weighs eight pounds, which is obviously too heavy to carry around with you all the time, but good if you want to take it in your car or camper on a camping trip or keep around the house to charge phones or power lights during a power outage. The unit is just under 10 inches wide, six and a half inches tall and deep.
This power station has a small light on the front, press the button once and it turns the light on, press it again and the light flashes, making it an emergency beacon. Press it a third time and the light flashes faster, the fourth time the light turns off. The small display in the upper left corner of the front tells you how much power you have remaining. There is a handle strap on the top of the unit for easy carrying.
There are several different types of connectors. A round car-type charger (cigarette lighter adapter), a USB-C connector, four standard USB connectors (two quick charge and two regular), one 12-volt plug and two standard plug ins (for standard two-prong household plugs).
It's extremely handy for charging phones and devices, since you can plug USB cords directly into the unit. The power adapters that most phone chargers use take up a lot of space, so it's nice to have something to power them without the adapters.
While using the power station (after charging it to full power), I charged multiple devices, plugged in my laptop and ran it for a couple of hours and hardly made a dent in the power reserve. It's not going to take the place of a generator, but it's portability is great for traveling in a car, camping or boating. Around the house it would be great during a power outage or taking outside during a BBQ or party to run a sound system or lights if there aren't any plugs handy.

Extremely portable gaming laptop
on November 8, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I've had both desktops and laptops, though obviously laptops are great if you travel a lot or need to move your computer around your house or office. This ASUS gaming laptop is a good combination of power and portability.
It's a 14-inch laptop, so pretty small. It's 12 1/2 inches wide and 9 inches deep. The screen does measure 14 inches and is very bright and clear. The laptop keyboard is good, it's got a dedicated power button, as well as volume and microphone controls that are easy to use while doing other tasks. For such a small laptop it's got a decent sized keyboard and the touchpad is quite large.
It comes with Windows 11 64-bit, with a 1 TB solid-state hard drive, making it quick to start and quick to respond when you open programs. It's got 16GB of RAM, an AMD processor and an AMD graphics processor.
Setting it up was easy, just start it up and start putting in your information so the computer recognizes you. Add whatever programs you want and you're ready to go. There's not a lot of bloatware, which is good. It does not come with a separate anti-virus program or security software (just the programs Microsoft includes), so if you want something different you'll have to install that yourself.
Because it's a gaming computer, it's got programs so you can customize the laptop's lighting scheme and gaming options (Armoury Crate and Aura Creator).
I installed my Steam account and played some games (Borderlands 3 and Left 4 Dead 2). The laptop handled both games well, no lag or difficulties. I installed PassMark, a benchmarking program to see how the laptop performed on various tests. Overall the laptop scored in the 70th percentile, but in the CPU and Disk tests, it was in the 90th percentile, showing the laptop has good processing and storage response. It may not play bleeding-edge games with all options at maximum, but it should provide a solid gaming experience.
Traveling with this laptop would be easy, since it only weighs 3.6 pounds. It's got lots of ports, an HDMI port for hooking up to a monitor or TV, a headphone jack, two legacy USB ports and two USB-C (newer) ports.
Even though the speakers are small, they sound pretty good for built-in laptop speakers. You can use Bluetooth headphones or wired headphones, since there's a headphone jack.
I did notice that depending what surface you put the laptop on, it can get hot (true of most laptops). Putting it on a flat, solid surface (table, desk) with no ventilation of any sort can make it get pretty warm. I've got a ventilated laptop stand for when it's on my desk and when it's in my lap I just keep my legs apart so there's plenty of air circulating.

We spend 90% of our time indoors where the air is often 2 to 5 times worse than the air outside. Continuous monitoring of indoor air quality is key for minimizing negative health effects, preventing illness and increasing productivity, energy and good health. Airthings, air quality specialists and experts in radon, created the Airthings Wave Plus as the first smart air quality monitor with radon detection. Wave Plus has since won multiple awards for consumer electronics and innovation and was among the 2019 TIME Magazine inventions of the year. It is the perfect solution for homeowners to gain full visibility into six indoor air factors; radon, carbon dioxide (CO2), airborne chemicals (TVOCs), humidity, temperature and air pressure. Airthings Wave Plus includes a free app to connect to your smartphone (iOS/Android) via Bluetooth and an online dashboard with advanced analytics. Battery operated allowing you to install anywhere, with 16 months battery life. Please allow for a 7-Day settling period for the sensors to adjust to their new environment. By monitoring daily and continuously, you can avoid radon side effects, get the best indoor humidity level, low voc levels and low carbon dioxide levels. Made to the best indoor air quality standards, Airthings Wave Plus is essential in every home.

Easy to use air quality sensor
on November 3, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I live in an area where it is common to have Radon emissions in homes, so I decided to get an air quality sensor that would keep me updated on Radon and other levels in my home. I already have a Radon mitigation system installed, but I wanted to see if it was doing enough to get rid of the odorless, colorless gas.
The Airthings Wave Plus Indoor Air Quality Monitor measures several air quality factors, including Radon, CO2 (carbon dioxide), humidity, temperature, VOC's (airborne chemicals) and air pressure.
When you receive the Wave Plus, you just have to unpack it, then pull the small plastic tab in the side of it to have the battery make contact and power the device. Then you can either mount the device on a wall (mounting screw included) or place it on a shelf or table where you want to monitor the air quality.
Download the Wave Plus app and connect via Bluetooth to access the device's levels, plus it tells you how much battery power is left. The device gives you 48 hour levels, plus a week-long level, so you need to have it in place for a week before you get any real solid information about your home.
To do a quick check of your air quality, you can just wave your hand in front of the Wave Plus and a colored ring will appear. Green for good, yellow for average and red for bad. This can be misleading, however. After the device had been in my home for a week, it listed my air quality as bad, mainly because of low humidity. I live in an area with very low humidity, so that's not going to change (except when it's raining or snowing). I could install a humidifier, but I prefer not to run one. Therefore I have to rely on the app data, not the "quick check."
The Wave Plus is a good, basic indicator of the air quality in your home. After a week of testing, you can move it to different rooms, to see if the air quality is different from room-to-room. On the Airthings app and website, they give you information on what the various levels should be, what is unsafe and ways to mitigate them. One of the best ways is good airflow and ventilation.

Good fitness & health tracker
on October 25, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I've never owned a fitness tracker, but I'm familiar with them because several friends have them. The Whoop 4.0 is a little different than some other devices because it's not a watch and doesn't have a display. All of your interactions with it are through your phone, so be aware of that in case that's not what you want.
When I first received the Whoop I had an older phone (about a five year old Android). I had a new phone on order, just hadn't received it yet. I set up the Whoop on my old phone just to see how it worked. The Whoop seemed to work fine, but took a long time syncing up with my phone. I'm not one of those people who has their phone on their person 24/7, so whenever I'd be back in Bluetooth range the Whoop would have trouble syncing.
As soon as I received my new Android phone, all connection problems disappeared. Now as soon as I walk into Bluetooth range, the phone immediately notifies me that it's synced up with the Whoop, especially first thing in the morning, when it downloads your sleep information.
The Whoop tracks your biometric information (respiration, heart rate, skin temperature, blood oxygen level) and your sleep cycles (how long you're awake in bed, how much light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep). To me that's the most important information, it lets you monitor how well you're sleeping and how your general health is.
The Whoop also tracks "strain," which is the amount of exertion you have on a day-to-day basis. It couples that with your average heart rate and calories burned to give you an idea of your activity level in normal daily life. The flip side of the "strain" information is "recovery," which lets you know how you're body is recovering from the strain by getting good sleep, etc.
The Whoop also lets you track "activities" such as exercise. I'm not an athlete of any sort, so I don't have much use for this feature.
You can set an alarm with the Whoop. On your phone with the Whoop app, you can set it to either let the Whoop wake you when it feels your sleep cycle is ready for you to wake, or you can set a specific time. The Whoop will vibrate on your arm until you tap it twice. If you're a very heavy sleeper I don't know that it would wake you up, but for most people it would probably be fine.
There are various online communities and support groups you can connect with, for people that like to share fitness information and get encouragement. The Whoop lets you export your health information, in case you want to track it or share it with a medical professional.
The one area I think is excessive is the monthly or annual membership fee. The fee is $24 or $30 a month (depending whether you pay annually or monthly). If you let your membership lapse, the Whoop won't upload information to your account.
I think the Whoop is good for serious athletes or people that really need to monitor their health, but not for casual users.

Amazingly powerful cordless vacuum from Dyson
on October 17, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I've owned an assortment of vacuum cleaners in my life, including one previous Dyson, which is still working great after 20-plus years. My first Dyson is an electric canister model, which is somewhat heavy and hard to maneuver is some areas, especially on stairs.
That's the reason I wanted a cordless "stick" type of vacuum cleaner, for light vacuuming and working on stairs, in cars, etc. I had one previous cordless vacuum from another manufacturer, it looks very similar to the Dyson but the Dyson outperforms it.
The Dyson has an incredible amount of suction power and is surprisingly quiet. After vacuuming area rugs, the rugs look like they did when they were new ... something that hasn't happened with any vacuum cleaner I've had. The Dyson comes with two attachments, a wide one for doing floors and a narrow one for getting in tight spaces and doing things like upholstery or in vehicles.
After you've charged the Dyson and fitted whatever attachment you want, you can use it for quite a while, depending which mode you choose to use. There is a power setting slide switch, regular and maximum. Obviously on maximum you will get less time vacuuming before having to recharge.
While vacuuming, the motor will cycle a couple of times and then stop, letting you know that the filter basket is full. To empty the filter basket, you pull up on the red lever on top of the vacuum. Be ready to empty it, because when you pull that lever, the bottom of the filter basket opens and dumps everything out.
The documentation that comes with the vacuum is pretty minimal, you have to go online to get more information. There are two filters (depending on your model), they can be removed and rinsed in water when necessary.

Small wireless security cam
on September 30, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
I like to have some security cams around my house, partially for security and also because we get a lot of wildlife in our neighborhood. On previous security cams and trail cams I've gotten pics and video of mountain lions, bears, raccoons, bobcats and lots of deer (plus my cats are constantly setting off alerts).
I like the Swann CoreCam because it's totally wireless, doesn't even need a wired power source. You can plug it in and charge it, then it's good for quite a while. Once you get it connected to your home network via the Swann app, it will notify you when there is activity on the camera. You can take pictures and video of any activity and listen/talk to anyone that is there via a microphone and speaker built into the camera.
I charged mine then mounted it, almost a week later it was still at 94% battery power. You can monitor the battery level on the Swann app.
Another nice thing is that the Swann CoreCam comes with a 32GB microSD card already installed. You can replace it with up to a 128GB card if you need more storage. Cloud backup is available for a fee.
Another nice thing is the camera is fairly small, so it will fit into just about any place you want to put it. The mounting bracket swivels, so you can point the camera in just about any direction and adjust it periodically if you need to.
The camera is weatherproof and works well in the dark (infrared night vision).
