Small laserjet all-in-one printer/scanner/copier
on January 30, 2022
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I rarely print anything, but when I have to, the inkjet printers I've had in the past are always trouble. The cartridges generally dry up and have to be run through all types of diagnostics and priming to work and even then the quality isn't great.
I read somewhere that for an infrequent printer, a laser printer is the best. I decided to give the HP LaserJet M140we a try, since it's not only a laser printer, but is also an all-in-one scanner and copier as well.
Out of the box the setup was quick and easy. Depending which device you want to print from, you can connect to any device via wifi and to devices with a USB port. They have downloadable software for computers on the HP site, plus the HP Smart App for Windows, Mac, iOS and Android.
I downloaded the app for my Windows 10 computer and for my Android phone. Both control the printer very easily for printing and scanning. You can print documents that are on your phone and on programs your phone accesses (DropBox, email, etc).
If space is an issue, this printer is very small compared to other printers I've had. It's just over 14” wide, 10 ½ inches deep and 7 ¾ inches tall. Easily fits on a shelf or the corner of a desk or table.
The printing and scanning quality is very good and the app makes the process very easy.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Easy to use air purifier with HEPA filter
on January 25, 2022

from Fort Collins, CO
We live in a fairly dry and dusty part of the country, plus we have dogs and cats. For those reasons we decided to get an air purifier, to try to remove some of the dust and pet dander from the air in our home.
The Kyvol air purifier is well-made, it is 15 inches tall and 8 inches in diameter (circular), it is stable enough to sit on a shelf or table. It was packed with plenty of padding and packing material, you have to open the bottom of the purifier to take out the packing materials, get the power cable and take the plastic bag off of the HEPA air filter. The only problem I encountered was getting the bottom cover back on, it's not as easy to put back on as it is to take off.
Once it's plugged in and turned on (all the controls are on top of the purifier, so wherever you put it, you have to have access to the top) the purifier defaults to fan setting 2. There are four fan settings, the first is probably too slow and settings 3 and 4 make the unit a little more noisy, so 2 seems the best.
The purifier also has a nightlight setting, which is great if you don't leave a lot of lights on and want a small amount of light.
If you press the “sleep mode” button, it will automatically turn off the nightlight and turn the purifier to the lowest fan speed. Turning off sleep mode returns it to whatever previous settings you were using.
There is also a timer, so that you can set it to turn off after a certain amount of time.
For those with kids, there is a child safety lock to prevent tampering with the controls. There is also an indicator for when your filter needs to be replaced.
So far it's a great product, works well and we don't even notice it when it's running.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Smart TV with excellent picture and good sound
on December 3, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I've had other Vizio products over the years, televisions and DVD/Blu-ray players, so it's a brand I know to be pretty reliable. The Vizio TV was packed really well in the box, which showed some wear and tear from being shipped. Even though the box took some damage, there was enough styrofoam, cardboard and packing material around the TV to protect it.
There's very little to do once you open the box. The TV has "feet" that need to be attached to the bottom of the TV, so you can stand it up on an entertainment center or other surface. The feet and screws are included, you just need a Philips screwdriver to attach them. Obviously if you're doing a wall mount, that doesn't apply (there is no wall mount included, you have to buy that separately). The feet are 33 inches apart, bear that in mind if you have a narrow table or surface you want to put it on.
The only other thing to do is put the included batteries in the remote control. The plug is permanently attached to the TV, so all you have to do is unwrap it (in plastic with a twist tie) and plug it in. There is no HDMI cable included with the TV, so you either need to have one already or buy one, assuming you need to hook up a cable/satellite box, streaming player, Blu-Ray player or sound system. If you're just using the TV with an antenna and/or just streaming services, no HDMI cable is required.
Once you plug in the TV and power it up, it runs you through some setup and registration questions where you input language preference, where the TV is located in the home, email address, wifi access, etc. Once the wifi is connected, you may have to wait for the TV to download some updates.
During setup the TV also asks if you need to do a channel search, in case you're using an HDTV antenna. I wasn't, but do have one in case I want to use it at some point. There is a coaxial cable port on the back of the TV, in case you're attaching an antenna or some type of cable box that uses coax (as well as some legacy sound connectors, Ethernet and optical ports). If you've attached any outside devices (cable box, streaming box or satellite receiver) to any of the HDMI ports, you can set them up as well.
You can then activate any streaming services that you want to use with this TV. Since it's a Smart TV, it comes with a lot of streaming services already installed. I put in my passwords for my streaming services and was able to start watching something immediately. One bad thing, if your streaming service isn't included, you can't download any services directly to the TV. You can use an outside streaming box to fill in any gaps or use Apple Airplay or Google Chromecast to send content from a laptop, tablet or phone.
I normally use a soundbar with a TV, since most TV speakers aren't that good. I tried the TV with my existing soundbar and it sounded pretty good. Just out of curiosity, I disconnected the soundbar to see how the TV speakers sounded. To my surprise, they actually sounded very good. I left the soundbar disconnected for now, since it sounds good without it. One bad note, at one point I had turned the TV off and later turned it on again. The sound was really loud, even though it was listed as being at sound level zero on the TV display, to the point it was too loud to listen to. I turned the TV on and off a couple of times, with no change. I played with various sound settings and didn't have any luck. Finally I found "Reboot the TV" in the settings and tried that. After that the sound went back to performing normally.
Since this is the first 4K/UHD TV I've owned, I decided to watch a couple of 4K/UHD videos. The picture was fantastic and the sound was great (even with just the TV speakers). Even when just watching regular satellite TV, the picture is very good (depending on the quality of the channel being watched). I get HD programming, not 4K with my satellite service, though 4K service is available if I ever want it.
There are three HDMI inputs, one of which is labeled as an ARC port, which assists with connecting the TV's sound system with an outside sound device (soundbar or receiver). It also has a USB port that can be used for photos, videos and music. I love having a TV that has this capability, since I often use a USB drive to store TV shows and movies. I watched a TV show via the USB port, it was easy to use and looked and sounded great.
The remote control that comes with the TV is basic but does what it needs to do. When watching satellite TV I'll use the satellite remote for that system, but to access the Smart TV features of the TV, you need to use the Vizio remote. I watched some TV and movies on Netflix and Amazon Prime using the Vizio remote and while it doesn't have as many dedicated buttons as some remotes, it's pretty intuitive to use. The remote also has voice control capabilities, not something I use, but some people like it.
Picture quality is very good, plus the TV settings give you many ways to customize the brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc. This TV is replacing a 42" TV that was not top of the line, so the bigger TV with better picture makes quite an impression.
The home screen (there's a button on the Vizio remote with a house icon) takes you to the screen where you can access your streaming services, but it also has free streaming programming made available by Vizio. Some of them are free previews from other services and others are Vizio-provided programming. Very good for people who have cut the cord and don't have access to much programming.

Weighted heating pad that also massages
on November 16, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I've had a few heating pads over the years and needed a new one for a knee injury. This pad works well because of 3 things: weighted, heating and massage.
The weighted part (4 pounds) is good because it stays where you put it and the weight provides a comforting pressure, without being too heavy. The pad is 1 foot by 2 feet, which is big enough that I was able to wrap the pad around my leg to give the most benefit to my knee.
The heating has three levels, so you can choose how warm you want it. The instructions provided say to leave the heating pad folded in half (warm side in) and turn it to high for a couple of minutes to let it heat up quickly. Even on the highest setting, it's warm enough to provide a good amount of heat without being too hot.
The massage also has three settings. When activated, the massager is a bit noisy, especially on the highest setting, but I found that putting a pillow or blanket over the heating pad dulled the noise quite a bit.
The covering of the pad is soft, but not removeable, so you can only spot-clean it if it gets dirty (obviously, unplug it before getting it wet and don't use it again until totally dry).
The cord is nine feet long, which is nice so you don't have to be right next to an outlet. There is an auto-shutoff feature for the heat (2 hours) and also for the massager (15 minutes), in case you fall asleep while using it.
All in all, a good product that should meet most peoples' needs.

Great router with great range
on October 21, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I needed to get a new router to add to my home network. I already had a Linksys router as the base of my network and an aging router of another brand bridged to use as a range extender. I used this new Linksys router to replace the aging router, thus becoming my new range extender.
Basically you just plug the new router into the old router with Ethernet cable (easy for me in this case because I can run the cable up a staircase to the next floor) and the new router extends the wireless signal throughout the house. I believe this can also be done via wifi, but I prefer to use cable to keep the signal strong between the two routers.
Setup was pretty easy, though because both routers are Linksys, sometimes when trying to access the setup of the new router, I would accidentally get into the setup of the original. Once I set the new router to bridge mode, everything worked great.
The router has great range, I can get good signal all over my house (basement, first and second floors) for my computers, phones, tablets and streaming devices.
I've owned several Linksys routers over the years (as well as other brands), this is another great product.

Easy to use indoor TV antenna
on October 19, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I pay for satellite TV, but always wanted to have a TV antenna as a backup (in case of outages, solar flares or alien attacks).
This antenna is very simple, I had it installed and was using it within minutes. I just attached the coaxial cable to the coax port on the back of my TV, plugged in the power cord, then did a channel search using the settings on my TV. Even without any fancy placement or mounting (I just put the antenna on a shelf above my TV), the antenna picked up 16 stations. The stations were a few different PBS channels, a couple of local stations, a western channel called Grit TV, a channel called theGrio, a station showing BBC News and Daily Mail broadcasts and even a QVC channel.
The picture quality is very good and did vary a bit from channel to channel, which is to be expected.
Again, not something I'm going to use all the time since I pay for satellite, but it's a good backup for emergencies that I can set up in a few minutes.

Decent anti-virus for PC and Android
on October 10, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I mainly got this to put on my Android devices, since the license allows you 10 devices. I put it on the 3 Android phones in my house, unfortunately I couldn't put it on my Android tablets because they're pre-Android 5.
I also put it on a Windows 10 laptop, to see if/how the Android and Windows versions are different.
It seems to work well, though the Android version has a lot less features than the Windows version. The Android versin has antivirus, parental controls, antitheft, backup and wifi security. The Windows version has antivirus, parental controls, backup, a firewall, system cleanup, home network scanner, identity protection and an optional secure browser.
The Android version seems fine, doesn't take up too much space and doesn't seem to drain the battery any more than any other AV app I've had. I haven't had any virus issues, so no way to know for sure how well it's working.
The Windows version is good, gives you lots of tools to keep your PC working well.
I'd say that since Bullguard gives you a decent number of licenses and is much cheaper than some of the other AV software, if you have lots of devices and need antivirus software, it's worth a try.

Very well-made pillow with a breathable cover
on October 7, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I was in the market for a new pillow, decided to try one of these Bedgear pillows. They're pretty expensive, but very well made and have a great cover that protects the pillow.
They advertise that one side is firmer than the other, but I couldn't really tell any difference. While the pillow I got is the thinnest in this class of pillows, it was still too thick for me if I was laying on my back. It's fine when I sleep on my side, but pushes my head too far forward when back-sleeping. I even tried it without the cover to see if that reduced the thickness, but it wasn't enough.
They do make other classes of pillows, so perhaps one of those would be thin enough. I guess pillows aren't really something you can buy online without being able to see their size first, if it's important to you.

Nice coffee maker with some extra features
on September 18, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I've owned a few Mr Coffee coffeemakers over the years, they're not the best or worst available, but they are dependable and make a decent cup of coffee.
This one has a clock (so you can program it to brew if you're on a regular schedule), plus buttons so you can set it to brew stronger coffee if that's what you like. It comes with a reusable nylon coffee filter and water filter you can use to clean any impurities out of your tap water.
You can adjust the length of time the warming plate stays on (from 1-4 hours), but there isn't an on/off switch for the warmer, which always annoys me. Once I brew the coffee, I typically turn off the warmer, so the coffee doesn't get a burnt flavor. When I need a second cup, I just turn the warmer on for a few minutes to reheat it. With this coffee maker, you have to turn off the brew cycle after making the coffee to turn off the warmer, then activate the brew cycle again to turn the warmer back on (since there's no more water in the maker, the brew cycle doesn't actually happen again). It would be easier to have an on/off switch for the warmer.
I like the size of this coffee maker, it's almost square and doesn't take up much room on your counter. It's 8 inches wide, 9 inches deep and 14 inches tall.
Since I've had other coffeemakers from Mr Coffee, I know that my usual amount of coffee and water will work to make coffee the way I like it. Each coffeemaker is slightly different and might need a slight adjustment, but in just a couple of days I've already gotten it the way I like it.

Good printer/scanner/fax that uses bottles of ink
on September 15, 2021
Posted by: gnoel809
from Fort Collins, CO
I don't print things that often and it seems like every time I need to, my printer doesn't work properly. Usually the print cartridges are low (or out) or dried up from lack of use.
I figured I'd try an Epson Ecotank printer, which has no cartridges, to see if it's any better. It comes with four bottles of ink (black, cyan, magenta & yellow) and you fill the tanks in the printer with the ink. If you need more ink, you just buy more bottles. You can see the ink levels in the tanks, so it's pretty easy to tell when you're getting low.
From what I saw online, new bottles sell between $20 and $30, the black bottles are closer to $30 because they're bigger (since most of us use more black ink than colors).
The printer is pretty small, fits easily on my desk. It's 14 1/2 inches wide, 13 1/2 inches deep and 7 inches tall.
It prints well and the scan function is very easy to use.
Epson includes a CD with the software if you're going to use a PC, but it also has apps for Android and Apple if you want to use your phone or tablet.
From your PC or other device, you can connect wirelessly or via USB or Ethernet.
