As Good As It Gets... but needs Rear Speakers Incl
on May 22, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
The HT-Z9F is one Sony's latest high-end theater sound systems which only uses a single sound bar and subwoofer to emulate a 7.1.2 surround sound experience. The package comes with the sound bar, subwoofer, remote control (batteries included), mounting hardware, Demo DVD, 4K HDMI cable, & paperwork.
Rather than go over ALL the specs which you can already find on this Bestbuy.com page, I'll try to give more observations of those specs instead.

PROS:
-----------
* Great-looking Sound bar and subwoofer. I like the removable front grill of the sound bar. The subwoofer is basic simple construction with a single front port on the bottom/front and the driver hidden behind the mesh on top.
* There is an option to remove the magnetic grill on the front of the sound bar. Looks great either way.
* Good frequency range. Different sounds - instruments, rain, explosions, screeches, speaking - it all really sounds quite good.
* The "vertical" sound of this bar does work to a degree and does enhance the listening experience. This feature can be turned on or off via the remote.
* The remote control is light, simplistic in design, and the buttons are satisfactory in response to the system.
* The sound bar has every connection possible to connect to... see attached picture for rear available ports including bluetooth 4.2.
* DTS and Dolby Atmos content were both outstanding (Avatar, The Matrix Reloaded, and some 4K online content). You can really tell the vertical sound engine is working well... to an extent.
* Subwoofer (wood casing) connects to sound bar with no issues.
CONS:
-----------
* For this $899 system, you are paying for the Sony name, the new technology used, and a great look. What you are lacking is more power and bass (though it does have plenty). The system is 400W which isn't bad. Granted, I have a bigger basement theater room, so this sub does not thump/hit like other higher end sub components that typically connect to separate receivers. However, for apartments, smaller rooms, or enclosed areas, this system will be an excellent choice if you want to fork over the $$.
* The main focus of this sound bar is to emulate a 7.1.2 surround sound experience. It does do that to a degree, but I strongly recommend getting the optional rear speakers (Sony SA-Z9R) to enhance the rear definition of sound that the sound bar (by itself) can lack.
* The rear speaker set (SA-Z9R) should be included with the $899 price point. Adding the 2 very small rear speakers only adds extra-defining surround sound - not much power. If you do not opt for the rear speakers, your surround sound will suffer a bit. The sound bar can still only do so much by itself, even with the vertical engine software.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------
* There is no real use for the LAN connection on the back of the sound bar currently. There are more future functions coming with upcoming firmware updates according to the Sony website (Network Function: Chromecast built-in, Works with Google Assistant, Spotify Connect, DLNA.)
* Sound bar is mountable and package includes hardware.
* Will use the Sony Music Center app to play music on different Sony speakers around the home. I was unable to get this app to connect - this is a future firmware update based on what the Sony rep told me on the phone. (The app works with my other wireless Sony BT speakers)
* If you opt to add the rear speakers, the only cord used for them is an AC power cord so make sure you have power available for each speaker.
CONCLUSION:
=====================
This is definitely a formidable theater sound system. The only applications that may need to be avoided are bigger theater rooms that may be open on the back side (where sound is not fully encompassed). It is highly recommended to get the rear surround speakers to get a "full" front/rear sound experience. It does not compare to a real 7.1.2 system but it's a viable option if you don't have room for a ton of components or want to "keep it simple". This is as good a sound bar system as anything out there. The vertical engine definitely helps, and for movies, it's quite good. On a separate note, music that has a lot of bass (bass you feel), you'll want to use a dedicated sub/receiver system. Great job, Sony!

Good price, good performance, SOLID
on April 26, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
DISCLAIMER: I have internet DL/UL speeds of 25/5 though AT&T U-Verse.
This ASUS gaming laptop is what I have been looking for... Fortnite Battle Royale, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, and Rocket League are the games being played the most. This laptop comes in a box in a fancy box. Pretty sweet packing job. Package includes the PC, power adapter brick/cord, stickers, key chain, and pamphlets.
Rather than go over ALL the specs which you can already find on this Bestbuy.com page, I'll try to give more observations of those specs instead.

PROS:
-----------
* Great-looking laptop. Keys light up and change color from left to right.
* Solid feel, well-built construction. Keyboard is solid with little/no flexing.
* PC is built for speed which I do like.
* I have played all 3 games listed above, and I honestly don't have any issues with latency and graphics. I DO have to wear over-the-ear headphones to drown out the fan noise (see below - CONS), but the graphics and movement of the screen graphics is what it's all about. The specs claim a 120Hz refresh rate and it seems up to par.
* Rocket League is probably the most graphics-intensive game I play, and most of the movement was seamless/smooth.
* Connectivity was a cinch to wi-fi. I was able to hook up to 5MHz channel with ease. Installation of updates and programs was quick.
* Boot-up time was incredibly fast.
* Plenty of 3.0 USB ports (4). No one wants to have to hook up a USB hub. All inputs are on left side except 1 USB & 1 Thunderbolt port which gives more room for mouse.
* Built-in speakers actually sound better than even high-end laptops. The sound really surprised me in a good way.
* PC comes with 16GB DDR4 RAM and upgradeable to 32GB. This will be a viable option to take advantage of in the near future. Also comes with the latest in 8th-gen intel i7 processors - the 8750H - which really flies.
* BT devices (headphones, keyboard, mouse) all connect seamlessly and work great. Absolutely no latency with the Logitech input devices I used... and Sony BT headphones.
* Quick accessibility to dedicated volume buttons (usually embedded in a Fn button). The MUTE function is in the Fn button area though.
CONS:
-----------
* With the smallest of tasks, it seems like it's working hard due to the fans always coming on. The simple task of downloading updates cause the fans to run in excess.
* FAN AGAIN... Perhaps this is the goal of the PC - to try and ALWAYS keep the inside cool because the fan really hardly ever stops when playing online. It's not going to blow up, but it feels like it. On the bright side, the PC doesn't get overheated where your palms sit... so that's a positive.
* Because of the fan, you will want to wear noise-cancelling headphones. Even desktop speakers (at times) can get overshadowed by the constant fan noise.
* Battery life will shrink quickly due to excessive fan use.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------
* Keys are a bit small on the right side (numeric keypad, arrow keys)... however, if you use a full-size BT keyboard/mouse, you'll be ok.
* I have not tried anything VR-related, but it does state it is VR-Ready. Unable to vouch for VR performance.
* I used Skype at the last minute so I could test out the camera, and it worked fine. Very little-to-no latency with the other party. Video was crisp. Picture on their end (they said) was very clear.
* To keep the PC minimal, an optical drive is not built-in to the unit. With all of the downloadable games today & USB/SD-cards taking over, optical drives will become more scarce.
* Screen is 1920x1080.... so NOT 4K. However, at this size, 4K isn't needed, and speed is improved with staying at 1080. ASUS made a good choice here to avoid latency issues.
* The PC is already pretty fast and includes a 1TB "Hybrid" SSHD (8GB of "SSD" built-in). I'm not really seeing much difference in performance due to this feature but perhaps over time, it will help.
CONCLUSION:
=====================
This is one of the new low-end gaming laptops that ASUS is offering this year. The more expensive versions offer up a better GPU (GeForce GTX 1070) and 256SSD. That may be a good upgrade, but unless then fan usage changes, you may want to stick with this model as movement and online play is quite good. I would like to know why the fans are used as much as they are though. They are quite loud, and perhaps that's by design in order to keep things as cool as possible. However, for gaming, it's also good to be able to play with headphones on and not annoy people around you with fan noise. This is a good PC with great performance. ASUS is on the right path here as they continue making high-quality PCs... It would be nice to see what can be done about keeping the unit cool without so much fan usage.

Great antenna, Mohu!
on April 6, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
DISCLAIMER: For my application, I already had a 4-way 10dB gain powered splitter in my attic which is connected to a simple 4'x4' double wire T-antenna with 2 gator clips on the connection end which was attached to a coax converter module. It was mounted in my attic. This is the same type "T-wire" antenna that came with older TVs a few years ago. I installed this Mohu Sail antenna on the same port of this splitter but also added the included power amplifier. The old antenna (which you'll see partially in my uploaded picture) was disconnected.
Mohu's new "Sail" amplified antenna is a great addition to their already great antenna lineup. The package comes with the antenna, 30' of RG-59 coax cable, mounting hardware, pre-amp module (power injector), and user instructions.

PROS:
-----------
* Previously, using my T-wire antenna setup, I was able to pick up 33 channels here in Hoover, AL (south of Birmingham). I replaced that antenna with the Mohu antenna and added the additional 15dB gain to the system, and now I re-scanned and receive 41 channels. I was able to get 8 more channels than I had previously. The antenna is mounted in my attic and faces due north towards downtown Birmingham, AL.
* The antenna is aesthetically appealing and made of lightweight material; light enough that if you really wanted to mount with some string or duct tape, or velcro strips, you definitely could.
* Simple installation (mostly, more on that later)
* Signal amplification is a must for most people, which this unit has.
* Great picture on my TV as expected.
CONS:
-----------
* HARDWARE included in the box NEEDS TO BE CHANGED/UPDATED.
1. --- Because I was installing in my attic, I could only install on a horizontal 2x4. This worked fine however I could only use 2 mounting screws (see pic). This was more than enough to hold the antenna in place INDOORS, but a smaller mount could be included so all 4 could be used if needed. All 4 screws would be needed outside due to wind.
2. --- The mounting screws have phillips heads on them. Putting that thick of a screw into a 2x4 is a quite difficult using a phillips head screwdriver or drill bit. I had to drill a "through" pilot hole in the 2x4 so the top of the screw would not strip (as much). It still stripped some anyway even with the pilot hole. Please change the head to a hex head type bolt or one that uses an allen wrench.
3. --- Perhaps there could be a metal, fiberglass, or thick plastic insert to go into the hollow bottom of the mounting arm that's attached to the mounting bracket. When tightening the 2 hex bolts, if you're not careful, the tube may start to bend since it's hollow. This would be most beneficial if mounted outside where the connections need to be very tight and secure.
* The 30' coax cable that was included was RG-59 low-grade coax. If you're going to have any kind of long cable run, make sure you use RG-6. It has heavier gage wire, thicker insulation, and better shielding. It is slightly more expensive. In addition, if you're able to use COMPRESSION fittings (see pic of my compression fitting attached to the pre-amp module) on the ends of your cable, use those. Avoid "crimped-on" fittings if possible. It will help provide a better overall signal regardless of source (cable/satellite/antenna). This is what we use for AT&T U-Verse/DTV coax installations.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------
* The amplifier/power cable is white but the USB AC power adapter is black. Try and make it all one color (all black?). It looks funny being 2 colors even though it's likely to be hidden.
* About the only way to install this antenna is to use the included hardware. Space could be a problem in a shorter attic... it would be an great addition to create a couple of holes (1 embedded in each top corner) or 2 attached loops on the top/back corners where it could be hung by velcro strips/rope/string via owner-supplied hooks or by looping string or thin rope around rafters. A simple plastic mold upgrade such as that would allow for a different installation type if needed, as the supplied mount may not work for everyone (in an attic at least).
CONCLUSION:
=====================
Great overall antenna. I like the look and the functionality. It did what it was supposed to do. I can't verify a 75-mile range but it did pick up 8 more channels than I had before due to adding that extra power injector module to my setup. The picture on my TVs were about the same as before... there was no improvement there because I was already getting a good signal previously. The biggest issue I had with the unit was the installation mounting hardware (phillips bolt heads the biggest issue) and lack of other installation options. Better hardware would give this antenna a 5-star rating. The functionality of the antenna reception itself is great though.

Sony Nailed It
on March 29, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
Sony hit a home run with this XB41 BT speaker. The size, features, and battery life should really appeal to most people who are looking for an all-around great wireless speaker. Package comes with speaker, proprietary wall charging unit, and instructional guide.

PROS:
-----------
* Incredible sound in a small package, but Sony’s largest speaker in this style. BASS is great!
* Connected flawlessly with 3 devices I own – all Android. NFC made it even easier.
* Lights can make the sound more fun I guess… personally, I’d rather have my speaker take on longer life so it continues to work. But the various light shows are still pretty cool at times.
* Fiestable app is a nice/fun added add-on. After playing around with it, it’s something that someone under 10 years old would probably have fun with. After about a minute though, I was over it and just wanted to listen to my music the regular way.
* The IP67 rating is great – as many BT speakers have this now. It’s great to be able to take this speaker to the ball park without having to worry about it getting wet or dirty.
* The 24 hour battery is one of the BEST features. No one wants their speaker to give out. However, if you do run out of power, you can either use the wall charger provided OR your own microUSB cable for charging. That concept is huge, as no one wants to haul around a proprietary cable around.
* USB port available for charging a cell phone in the rear panel. As long as you have plenty of life left, this could be useful.
* BT signal was exceptional when connecting with Samsung Note 8. I was able to get around 50’+ for line of site and around 40’ with one wall separating phone and speaker.
CONS:
-----------
* I’d like to see the Sony “Music Center” app a bit more updated and user friendly. For instance, sound shouldn’t really be in settings, but on the front page as “Audio” or similar. Even the illumination would be better suited to a more accessible area on the main page instead of having so many submenus.
* The great idea of having a secondary way of charging the speaker via microUSB is great – however, we are in 2018. This should have been a USB-C cable input for charging. This would allow for possible faster charging AND not have to worry with which way the connector has to be turned. MicroUSB should be a thing of the past on new products such as this going forward.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------
* I find it a bit amusing that ads for this product show teens all holding up a Sony BT speaker… What world is that? As fun as it looks, I don’t recall any party where teens bring their own Sony BT speaker and join them all up together and dance with them. Nice concept, but not sure if that’s a huge selling point.
* The product claims to have a 3.94 foot shock proof chassis (on a 1.97” thick piece of plywood. Well, I’m not going to drop it to prove otherwise. Dropping on cement or tile floor from that same distance might get different results.
* See picture provided with review to see the ports available in the rear panel which is waterproof. Door latches pretty tightly.
* Lights can be turned on/off in the Music Center app in settings along with some simple EQ settings as well.
CONCLUSION:
=====================
I own a few BT speakers, and this one is likely the best of them all. It has plenty of bass and power, flashing lights, waterproof, and other applications via the Music Center and Fiestable. Connecting (up to 100) many of these together in a room could definitely provide plenty of immersible sounds at a party inside or outside. Being BT, they just need to be within 30-40’ of each other. Line of sight can be longer. There are plenty of pros to buy this speaker and not enough cons not to. Clearly Sony got it right on this one.

Best BT headphones Sony has made yet
on March 25, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
Sony made a few great improvements over last year’s XB950N1 BT headphones, the biggest being the weight & battery life. Package comes with headphones, 3.5mm male/male audio cable, microUSB charging cable, and instructional guide. NO wall charger.

PROS:
-----------
* The sound is incredible, period. When using the Sony “Headphones” app, you can really make any song sound its best with the bass boost capabilities and pre-set equalizers. OR if you’re like me, you have 2 CUSTOM equalizer settings you can change if you don’t like the pre-sets. If you don’t use the Headphones app to make additional settings, you’re missing out on some upgraded audio.
* The WEIGHT of these headphones is music to my ears. Last year’s model, though sounded good, weighed way too much. A turn of the head or a lean back, and they would tend to fall off or shift. Not this year’s model. These have smaller ear cups and a lighter weighted casing/circuitry.
* Comfortable beyond expectations. Last year’s model got uncomfortable due to thickness of ear foam material causing the cups to get sweaty (it would get hot inside cup area).
* Updates to the “Headphones” app has made for a better listening experience as I stated before regarding the EQ, bass boost, and 2 Custom settings.
* Battery life is crazy good. I have listened to these headphones for about 20 hours on medium volume and battery icon on the Headphones app still shows about one-half depleted. These will be great for work as they’ll last about a whole week before having to charge.
* Buttons are generally in good spots so as to not accidentally press one and change settings while listening.
* When paired up with Samsung Note 8, BT range is quite exceptional. Line of site range was over 50’ while generally one wall in my house would not cause any degradation until around 40’.
CONS:
-----------
* No carrying case/pouch. It comes with a USB charging cable and a 3.5mm male/male cable, but nowhere to put these items if traveling. Last year’s model had a pouch which was useful.
* Due to lack of ear foam (or design?), you can hear more noise/music from the outsider perspective. If you’re in an open workplace, yes, your co-workers will be able to hear what you’re listening to if levels are at medium+.
* Quality of music sound does degrade when using the wire instead of BT. Headphones app can only be used with BT connection so no improvement to audio can be made. With a 35-hour battery, hopefully that won’t happen often.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-----------
* In the slider adjustment area, headphones sport a nice piece of chrome trim to give it a classy look
* Phone operation works fine with given mic. User on other end was unable to identify that I had a BT device connected.
* 2 different phones were used in a situation where I called someone driving (and paired with) a Nissan Rogue and the other person could hear their own echo when they spoke (in their car speakers). When their phone was unpaired from the vehicle, the echo on the phone disappeared. There may be a deeper cause for this scenario to occur but won’t be investigated further here.
* NFC pairing was smooth and seamless using 2 different android devices.
* When using WinAmp (audio player no longer in Play Store), the play/pause button will not play or pause songs, but the REW/FF lever does work. Last year’s model had no problem with pause/play. I’m not sure why it’s not working. However; when I hold down the pause/play, the Google assistant IS activated. So the button works physically, but not with Winamp.
CONCLUSION:
=====================
Comfortable headphones. Great sound, especially when using Headphones app. Light weight. Long battery life. There are plenty of good things about these headphones to warrant the retail $200 price point. However, for that price, a carrying case would be a great add to this product if not just to carry the cables, but to protect them during transit. Great job, Sony!

Best Streamer Available...with local OTA DVR soon!
on February 18, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
dashcam
AirTV is headed in the right direction... and a new feature - Firmware for LOCAL DVR / OTA PLAYBACK is coming any day now...
PROS:
-----------
* Boots up extremly fast
* 4K Streamer. Yeah, only a handful of services provide 4K now, but if you have a 4K TV and watch those networks' series, it's a step up.
* Access to the Android Play Store. If you want it, you can get it.
* Ability to now watch Over-the-Air (OTA) via the device. No more having to switch to RF input. It's built-in to the interface. With an amplified antenna in my attic, I'm able to pull around 33 channels here in the Hoover, AL area.
* Remote is sturdy and well-built. It has the ability to turn off all devices after setup completes... Power button turns off the device, my TV, and my receiver. Of course, this can be turned off in settings. However, you can use the remote to turn up/down the volume too.
* ETHERNET! It has an ethernet port!! When there's a wired connection available, use it. It is better than wifi in most cases.
* No issues with buffering. I use AT&T U-Verse with 24Mb/s DL and 5 Mb/s UL... I have no issues viewing content in HD. I do not have a 4K TV (yet), so I'm unable to see 4K quality.
* There is little to no latency when using the remote and the response on the screen. Apps appear to work flawlessly as well.
* There is a guide, even for the OTA channels.
* Digital audio out via fiber is available
* Remote finder button on main unit. Press, and the remote beeps/blinks so you can find it.
CONS:
-----------
* The interface is a little jacked up at first as you learn how to maneuver around. If you actually subscribe to and use SLING TV, it is setup a bit more for those users, but don't let that discourage you. Just scroll down to the bottom where APPS is located, and you can start up your other streaming services pretty quickly.
* The remote is a bit cartoonish being white and light blue, but I guess that does make for finding the remote easily visually.
* In order to get a Sling TV account, you MUST sign up for a free trial. There is no "just signing up".
* Big flaw... when a program is paused and then you REW or FF, the screen doesn't change as the show goes forwards or backwards. It stays on that paused screen while the timer moves. So you can't resume play at a certain "scene" as it's REW/FF through the show. Perhaps that can be fixed in future software updates.
* In addition, I wish there was a quick FF/REW button on the remote or a touch-sensitive pad on the remote that would allow for quick REW/FF... or even a certain amount of time forwards or backwards quickly in case you miss something they say (in those hard-to-understand shows).
* There is only 8GB of internal storage - would be nice to have a bit more.... say at least 16-32GB.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
------------------------------------
*** When you get the device set, you get a code that will give you $50 of SLING TV programming which translates to 2.5 months of Orange TV coverage (their small package). But get this... they have a promo in which you can buy 2 months of service and get a FREE ROKU EXPRESS. So they are basically giving you another streaming device that you can use elsewhere or for travel... or gift it. Great addition of the promo. You can also get other items (promos) for discounted rates... you can find those promos online.
* The unit comes with a proprietary power cable with decent length. I would have preferred to have a USB-C power connection, but it still works fine. There are power requirements for the device obviously, and they don't want that compromised, so they have a small brick plug-in.
*****************************************
!! HUGE ADD-ON COMING SOON !!
*****************************************
Very soon, in the upcoming days, AirTV will be offering LOCAL DVR recording ability via software/firmware update. Hopefully by the end of Feb 2018... no exact release date has been set yet. It will allow the ability to record OTA programming to a USB thumbdrive or external USB drive that you plug into the OUTTERMOST USB port on the back of the unit. So the OTA adapter will go into the USB port that is next to the digital audio (fiber) port. This is an exciting and new addition to the product. This feature is obviously unable to be tested at this time. It is also undetermined how large of a drive you can actually hook up, so stay tuned to AirTV website for more of those details. That's a FREE DVR for network OTA TV!
CONCLUSION:
=====================
Possibly the best and MOST COMPLETE streamer out there. Others are great... some have their issues. But with a WIRED ETHERNET connection, local DVR OTA capability coming soon, and the fast boot-up, along with 4K streaming, and fiber audio output available, there's not a better device out there with the available features. At the price, definitely worth it. A must-have for those new cable cutters out there.

Good concept, but a big miss
on February 18, 2018
Posted by: BADog

The Garmin Speak Plus with Alexa + dashcam is a good concept, but in all reality, a big miss, in my opinion.
PROS:
-----
* Camera has decent video during the day. Width of coverage could be a bit better though. I think the width is only 82-degrees.
* Compact size with lengthy power cord
* Easy setup though it did take a while to confirm the update was in fact updating.
* 2-3 apps need to be installed on smartphone for this device to work.
* MicroSD card can be popped out of the device with something similar to a small flathead screwdriver... push it in, and it pops out. Easily readable on a PC if you have an microSD card adapter (not provided). Transferring files off the card is quickest using this method.
* Easy readable front display for instructions and directions.
* After I linked Pandora to the device, it was able to start up Pandora, pause, and start music with no issues
CONS:
-----
* Camera does not have good video at night.
* My biggest complaint is that it ALWAYS has to be connected to your phone's BT connection in order for the ENTIRE unit to work. I found that if not connected, the dashcam does not even function. Perhaps a SW upgrade could make the dashcam work regardless of BT connection - and if you want Alexa's other functions, then have the ability to turn it on. Forget your phone? Unit won't function.
* Couldn't cancel directions if I didn't need them anymore. I was at address but still 300' away from where it thought I needed to be... I couldn't get Alexa to stop telling me what to do directionwise.
* Unable to call or text with Alexa. Alexa stated that this device is not supported for voice or text functions.
* Simple function of "Alexa, start my day" did not work after I had programed it to do so.
* The user is unable to select what size video files are stored. Usually the option is up to 3-4 minutes per clip... this device auto-stores the videos in 1-min increments only.
* User is able to download videos to smart device but only through crazy wifi connection that can sometimes be a bit aggrivating.
* Unit came with an 8GB microSD card. As cheap as these cards are, at least 32GB would have been a better choice.
OTHER OBSERVATIONS:
-------------------
* The power cord has to be facing up due to forced nature of microUSB power port. I didn't mind as my cord was going to be hidden up top, but some people may want it to go down in some applications. Perhaps a USB-C power connection would be better?
* The blue light on the power adapter is very bright and might be a bit distracting at night if the cigarette lighter outlet is in a bad spot in front of you. You can use a small circle of electrical tape to black-out completely OR 1-2 small circles of white cloth tape to dim the light.
* The only option to mount to windshield is using the sticky flat area. There is no other way to "mount" the device (no suction cup, no visor connection, no rear-view mirror connector, etc). Suction cups give out after time, so that's fine.
CONCLUSION:
===========
I honestly don't know why anyone would need to be doing "assistant" type tasks while driving when your focus should be on driving somewhere safely. The turn-by-turn directions by Garmin is great... and the webcam is the best feature; however, having to use and learning HOW to use Alexa is the tedious part of this process. If you're already familiar with Alexa, perhaps this might be the device for you. But seeing how I have other apps for most of the functions that Alexa is used for, I found the assistant feature nearly useless. Also, not being able to text or call someone nearly defeats the purpose of an in-car assistant as that's what people usually do in a car - make phone calls or text people (though texting manually is NEVER a VIABLE option... voicing a text is at least slightly safer). I just don't know many people that need to tell their home devices to do things as they are usually on auto-pilot themselves... or making lists. Product missed the mark, in my opinion, and with device not working unless BT is enabled, that's the biggest miss of all. If I don't bring my phone, then the dashcam doesn't even function. Fix that, and it might earn one more star. For the issues here, I would hope the price of this product is significantly lowered unless fixes are made.

Best On-Ear Headphones Available
on January 19, 2018
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
If you're looking for a set of bluetooth (BT) headphones, this may be the best set of headphones - FOR THIS PRICE POINT.
I have other headphones both on ear and around the ear... and I prefer covering the whole ear. It's just more comfortable and tends to offer more privacy and noise reduction capabilities to others around you.
PROS:
-------
* For the price point, the sound is VERY good. Of course "very good" is also dependent upon what music player you are connected to. Some devices don't allow for a graphic equalizer or tone type. In those cases, the sound could be quite stale.
* Nice design & look... they look current.
* Easy to identify Left and Right earpiece as an L and R are inside each ear cup
* Easy setup and connectivity. I have not had any connection loss to my Samsung Galaxy device
* Yes, the battery lasts a LONG time. Many wireless earbuds only last about 5-6 hours max - these go for about triple that time. I listen for about 2-3 hours per day, and I can go a whole week before recharging.
* It comes with a little mesh bag so you can include the charging cable and 3.5mm male/male cord if the battery dies and you still need to use.
* Comfortable, soft ear cups.... until....(read on)
CONS:
-------
* These headphones being a new product and size not an issue, I REALLY wish the charging port was USB-C instead of a micro-USB. USB-C charges faster and the charging tip can be flipped in either direction unlike micro-USB.
* ...comfortable until after about an hour due to pressure on the ears. I had to remove for a couple of minutes and then put back on.
* Definitely can't be used for running or exercising unless you are a slow mover and aren't bending over frontwards or backwards. They are heavy enough that they will fall off. For a brisk workout, you may need to stick with earbuds instead. For walking on a treadmill, you're probably ok... if you head shakes a lot for whatever you're doing, these may not be for you.
* The biggest disappointment is the Plantronics app. You don't expect it to do much, but in my case, it continued to crash. It was unresponsive mostly then I got the crash pop-up (I'm on an Android phone - Samsung Galaxy Sx and Note 8).
My biggest takeaway is that even though they sound good, I'm not sure I'd still pick them over a more expensive over-the-ear unit. I like to be immersed in sound and not have my ears hurt after time listening. Over-the-ear headphones can be used all day with no discomfort. The main reason I wouldn't use these is due to the eventual discomfort I had after they had been used for a while. This may not affect you as much but it did for me. I love the battery life as that may be a great selling point for most people. Not many people want to go a few hours and have to recharge. They should have to recharge once per day max... when you go to bed. If you can get around added pressure on your ears, this would definitely be the headphones for you. Pricewise, they offer the best sound and features over the rest of the pack. Now it's time to fix the app for compatibility issues...

Great Compact Oven!
on December 24, 2017
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
We are replacing a smaller B&D oven with this one, and so far, the De'Longhi doesn't disappoint. Size-wise, it's a bit bulky for what I'm use to, but after getting used to it, I enjoy it quite a bit.
PROS:
* Heats quickly. I can set to BAKE setting and get to 400 degrees-F in about 4-5 minutes.
* The convection option is great for a better cooking-thru experience
* Everything is digital and on screen. Analog dials change the digital settings in the main window.
* Stainless looks great
* Double-paned window on the front keeps more heat in. There is a good seal around the front window door.
* The LIGHT on the inside is great!! If baking, the light automatically comes on.
* Includes a pizza pan - and able to cook a 13" pizza
* Always-on clock display
CONS:
* With the double-layer rack system, it would be great to have INCLUDED another wire rack. If you're paying this much for a small oven, an extra small rack and another cookie tray would be ideal.
* I wish the pizza pan had small holes in it like our bigger round pizza pans. This would allow for more heat to the bottom of the pizza
* Accessories include 1 rack and a broiler pan. I would like for another accessory to be a big square pan that you can place on top of the wire rack itself (not the round pizza sheet) - something similar to the crumb pan that's on the bottom. This allows for cooking things like chicken strips, french toast, etc that require more than the wire rack. The broiler pan can be used, but surface space is limited due to its bowl-like design on the edges.
* There is no way to change the volume level of the beep tone. This may not be an option on many (or any) of this type of appliance, but it would be nice especially in the mornings when people are sleeping - this high-pitch beep can wake people up.
* Wire rack spacing of wires is that of a regular-size oven. My last wire rack had the wires closer together which helped keep food from falling through the wire spaces. Something to keep in mind if you cook smaller items.
* As with most small appliances, if the power goes out, clock has to be reset.
NOTES:
* Oven gets hot, and quick. My previous oven must not have gotten this hot because it is very easy to burn things in this oven if you don't have your times set correctly. Initially, keep a close eye on your food so it does not burn.
* "Pizza" setting is different than a regular "bake" setting. You put the frozen pizza in the oven from the start - no pre-heating. If you're waiting for a pre-heating beep in Pizza mode, it won't happen - that's all part of the cooking process.
* The oven bakes on top/bottom only, but De'Longhi also has another oven identical to this one but with an added side burner for a 3-zone cooking area. This one appears to cook evenly and just fine for what I use it for.
* Unit uses a 3-prong AC power plug.
Overall, a great oven functionally. However, at the selling price point, I would ask for another wire rack for double-layer baking and also another pan similar to the pizza pan, but square/flat like the crumb tray. For this price, I don't see why that wouldn't be a doable option. For what I did get to use, it worked great. I have used this oven to make French toast, regular toast, cookies, 10" Digiorno frozen pizza, frozen waffles, small frozen pot pie, and a few other odds and ends all on various settings. I had a couple of things get slightly over done but I will adjust in the future to compensate for the higher temps this oven puts out over my previous portable oven. I have posted a picture of my previous oven and this one so you can see the size diference and also the round back of the oven that allows for a full-size pizza to be cooked. Also a picture of all the racks/pans included. Should last us for many years!

Solid Laptop for Everyday Use
on December 1, 2017
Posted by: BADog
from Hoover, AL
The HP Envy x360 is exactly what I was looking for. It's extremely sturdy, has a great picture, and is very thin and sleek. Rather than giving you too many technical specs, I will point out what I like and don't like about this laptop. Technical specs are at BestBuy.com.
Physical Controls on laptop include...
--RIGHT SIDE--
power cord input
SD card slot
1 USB-C slot
volume rocker switch
1 USB 3.0 (made for quick charging)
--LEFT SIDE--
HDMI output
power button (illuminated when on)
headphones/mic combo 3.5mm jack
That's it. No controls on the front or back as this screen flips 360-degrees.
PROS
====
* The keyboard, though not a full-size keyboard, is quite comfortable. The keys on this laptop are the best I have ever typed on. They are not too sensitive, and they do not click when pressed. For active typists, you don't have to worry about an errant key being typed due to fingers sitting on the keys.
* Even though the mouse sits just below the thumb part of the palm of my right hand, it does not move the mouse (as much) by accident like some mouse pads do on laptops. My left hand touches the mouse pad a bit less, and is rarely affected. This is a huge plus when the mouse pad is not deactivated... the cursor doesn't jump everywhere because of your palm touching the pad.
* I like having a physical volume (on the right side of the laptop) available instead of being forced to use the function keys and volume icon in the taskbar. This makes for a quicker adjustment simply by feel.
* Bright, vibrant screen. Touch sensitivity is just right with the on-screen feel.
* Speed is awesome. I have had great experiences so far with installations, network speed, and app initialization/opening. The i7 8th Gen intel chip is proving to work great with this laptop.
* FACIAL RECOGNITION to login. This feature works like a charm and is super convenient. When the computer boots up, it automatically is searching for my face... I glance over to the PC and boom, I'm in. Very convenient. I have not tried to trick it yet with a big photo of me...
* Quite operation. I have played with some memory-intensive apps and video and haven't had any issues with laptop overheating or struggling to keep up. A big reason for that is the i7 8th gen processor and the whopping 16GB of RAM in this thing.
* Battery life appears good as I have not been video intensive - mainly web browsing with screen slightly dimmed - and it's down to 41% after 5 hours of use.
CONS
====
* No wired ethernet LAN port available. This would be great at times if you want the greatest throughput on a network. Not a deal-killer, but keep in mind that if your wireless goes out or your antenna degrades or malfunctions, there's no backup plan for a network interface unless you get a network interface device that can be connected via USB-C.
* No optical drive (if you're needing one)
* No VGA output option - only HDMI. VGA comes in handy from time to time.
* There is no place for a computer lock cable to secure the laptop.
OTHER NOTES
===========
* NO issues with given power adapter. It does get quite warm as most do, but it does not malfunction nor does the laptop act weird due to power issues like some reviews have stated. I guess my BIOS was set correctly.
* Bluetooth (BT) works like a charm. BT earbuds and mouse connect easily with no issues.
* There were no issues with normal Windows 10 operations. Setup was easy. I didn't see any compatibility issues.
For an everyday on-the-go laptop, this is a keeper. Speed is great. The look is great. The screen has a great picture. Overall performance is as good as most other laptops I have worked on. HP did a great job here overall... but I do wish there was a spot for a network LAN cable.

how does it sound with music on a computer?

Sound is good for gaming mainly. If you have bass sounds in a game, they sound very good. But if you're looking for bass sounds in music using this speaker, you'll probably want to go with a speaker system with a dedicated sub.

Keep your patios and entryways looking great with this Hoover ONEPWR cordless hard-surface sweeper kit. The lightweight construction makes cleaning tasks easier, while the long-lasting battery lets you get through extensive jobs before having to recharge. This Hoover ONEPWR cordless hard-surface sweeper kit blows up to 85 mph to get solid results fast.

How long does this run after a charge?

I got around 14 minutes on a full charge. Hoover claims 16 minutes but I was unable to get that multiple times. If you get the 3Ah battery, time will be more, but I'm not sure how much more since that battery was not included in the box.

Drive safely with this Cobra super HD dash cam. Its 1296p recording resolution captures high-quality video footage in any lighting condition, while the extreme temperature protection is tested to withstand sudden fluctuations. This Cobra super HD dash cam provides iRadar route tracking and live police alerts when connected to the iRadar app, so you never miss a thing.

How long does the cobra dash cam hold the footage does it erase it over how can you look back a week to see the footage

it keeps the footage until it starts looping and writes over it. That is, unless the file is protected by manually hitting the blue button on the back of the unit OR if a video is triggered due to GPS event (car is hit). It will also depend on how big of a microSD card you use and how much time is used driving. Many factors.

What is iRadar? How does it work

iRadar is just an app you put on your phone that works with this Cobra dashcam. Without the iRadar app running on your smartphone and bluetoothed to your unit, you won't get GPS data. So you have to turn on the app each time you drive if you want GPS data embedded on your videos. And even then, your MPH won't be on the video itself - it's only seen with the HD Dash Cam program you download from the Cobra website. I have a couple of screenshots on my review with GPS data and without GPS data.

Enjoy a theater-like experience in the comfort of your home with this 370W Samsung soundbar system. Wi-Fi functionality offers hands-free voice control with select devices for an easy intuitive user experience, while dual HDMI ports connect multimedia equipment. This Samsung soundbar system includes a wireless subwoofer that adds rich bass for immersive audio.

Will the new hw q80r shut off like the hw n850 after 5 min of paused movie.

Q80 should do everything the N850 did. Based on specs and my experience with the two, the changes from last year to this year are a name change and a couple of cosmetic changes (dark gray to black chasis, smaller Harmon Kardon label on top of bar, circular fabric over the subwoofer driver instead of cloth covering the entire side). Oh, and they now offer 1 more wifi audio service in addition to Tune-in. They offer Deezer too. Still no Pandora or Spotify via the Smartthings app unfortunately.

Will the lid hinge rest/scratch upon the surface when opening it?

It just opens/closes with no latch mechanism. It rests flat against the base but I don't see how it would scratch it.
