Improve daily oral hygiene routines with this Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush. An internal sensor regulates applied pressure to prevent soreness of teeth and gums, and the BrushSync reminder lets you know when it's time to change the brush head. This Philips Sonicare electric toothbrush removes up to seven times more plaque than a regular toothbrush to maintain oral health.

Great toothbrush
on March 22, 2018

This is my second Sonicare product and replaced a five year old one that finally quit. After brushing with one of these it feels like I've just been to the dentist. The three different cleaning modes are easy to switch between. The handle emits a slightly different vibration to let you know its time to move to the next area of your mouth to ensure proper coverage of your entire mouth. I like the "smart heads" that let you know its time to change to a new one, unlike my old unit that kept track of usage through the app. This toothbrush is not app enabled but I rarely used that functionality before, so its not a deal-breaker. The only thing I disliked about this one is that the handle is black and it shipped with a white click-on brush head. Black heads are available so I don't know why they wouldn't match them when packaging. Otherwise I've been very impressed with the toothbrush. Two week battery life is a big plus and the handle lets you know when its getting close to time to charge.

Pretty good, missing important features

The Simplisafe Protect was, as the name implies, simple to set up. Unbox, plug in the base station, set up the keypad then install sensors and sync them. Done. It took me longer to choose the right locations for the motion sensor and window/door sensors than anything else. The sensors and base station are small enough to be fairly unnoticeable and the new design is a big aesthetic improvement over the prior version. All of the sensors and the keypad install with command hook type adhesive strips and a few extras are included in the box in case you mess up when initially positioning one or decide to relocate something later. The siren is loud enough to definitely grab some attention, which is good because unless you pay for monitoring, this is the only notification the system gives.
Unfortunately, Simplisafe hasn’t baked-in the ability to self-monitor this system in any way. Absent the monitoring, all you have is a noise-maker. I didn’t figure this out until I had the system completely installed, which was a huge disappointment. Although the base has built-in wifi and cellular capabilities, they only work to connect to the monitoring company. There is no way to get notifications sent to your phone or other device when alerts occur (although I understand you can set it up with Simplisafe to call you before calling emergency dispatch, assuming you’ve paid for the monitoring).
If you want a monitored alarm system and are willing to pay the ongoing monthly fees, this system is great. If, however, you want a local alarm with the ability to self-monitor, look elsewhere.
On another note, also lacking from this system is any integration with smart home technologies. Not a deal-breaker necessarily for me, but something I would expect to see at this stage of the game. Because of what I perceive to be shortcomings, I would only cautiously recommend the Simplisafe Protect and would definitely include caveats when doing so.

Great speaker, apps need work
on March 11, 2018
Posted by: Chadwick

First off, this speaker sounds really amazing for its size. More bass than I was expecting from a speaker this size. Plenty loud and stays clear even at high volumes. The lighting effects are an interesting addition that should make dock parties a little more interesting. The “Party Booster” mode is more of a novelty than anything that will really be used. Fun for a minute or two but that’s about it for me. As far as the hardware goes, Sony has done well with this portable speaker. The app support on the other hand is severely lacking. The Music Center app consistently disconnects from the speaker requiring you to go into your Bluetooth settings to “reconnect” in order to adjust sound and lighting settings even though the sound never stops. The Fiestable app won’t work at all, saying you have to connect your speaker first. This after using the speaker for 30+ minutes. Skip the download of that one. That’s the only reason I dropped a star off the review. Other than the app support, the SRS XB31 is a great speaker. One other thing to note, this speaker doesn’t come with a power block so you’ll need an extra one to charge this speaker. The good thing is the battery life is long enough you shouldn’t have to worry about it very often.

Pretty decent smart alarm clock
on February 20, 2018
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
I was looking for a small Bluetooth speaker to use in the bedroom that wouldn't break the bank and came across the Insignia Voice. It filled the role of two devices since there's an alarm clock built-in so I could do away with my old one and not clutter up my nightstand. I thought the built-in Google Home would be a nice addition, especially at this price point. The sound quality is not stellar, but is decent enough for my needs. Setup was quick and easy through the app. Google Home still lags pretty far behind my go-to intelligent assistant, but I don't really need that capability in the bedroom. Hopefully, future software updates will help, but Google simply isn't far enough along at this point to draw me away from my current tech. I haven't tried integrating this unit into my smart-home devices as I'm not sure Google and Alexa would play nicely together. If you're already in the Google ecosystem, you would do well adding this unit to your collection. If, like me, you're invested in other systems, it's still a good device to have for playing music at moderate levels (via wifi or Bluetooth) while integrating a display for time and temperature (although I do wish you could set a longer length of time to show the temp as it disappears relatively quickly). All in all, a decent buy, especially if you can catch it on sale.

Just okay
on January 24, 2018
Posted by: Chadwick

I was really excited to finally have a set of truly wireless headphones and the JBL Free looked like it would fit the bill. Unfortunately, these headphones are just okay with lots of room for improvement.
First, the good. The fit of the earbuds can be customized to your liking fairly quickly with the included ear tips and silicone sleeves. Once I got the right combination, the buds felt good, were comfortable, and didn't make me worry about one falling out. The pairing process worked as expected and I had no issues. When you take the buds out of the charging case, they automatically turn on and connect to the last device they were paired to. They turn off when you place them back into the case and automatically begin charging. The case has a series of four LED's showing the charge state of the case itself.. Sound quality is decent (more on this later). Battery life appears to be in line with JBL's claims. So far so good.
But now the bad. As I said before, the sound quality is decent...just decent. Lows are missing and highs get muddled. Not what I expect from JBL. The volume is noticeably lower than other wireless headsets I use with the same device (iPhone 7). The main point of headphones is to listen to music, and these unfortunately don't shine on this simple task. Then there's an intermittent connection issue between the buds. Only the right one connects to your device and the left gets its sound data from the right. In normal use, the sound in the left will simply drop out for no apparent reason. It's unpredictable and annoying. Also, if you plan on wearing anything that covers your ears for warmth (or fashion), the connection dropouts will increase exponentially so they won't be a good choice for anyone who enjoys winter sports and staying warm. On an aesthetic side, when the Free's are on, a blue ring pulses on each one and there's no way to turn that off. Although I obviously can't see the glow unless I look in a mirror, that pulsing light will certainly bring a lot of attention to the fact you have these in your ears. I simply prefer to be a bit more discreet. There is no way to change the volume through the buds, requiring you to pull out your phone, use your smartwatch or invoke your voice assistant. Not ideal in my opinion. Also, the controls are not simply touch sensitive areas, but physical buttons, meaning double "taps" are more cumbersome and somewhat slower.
I really wanted to like the Free's but there are simply too many areas that need improving (especially basics like playing music reliably). There are other options in this arena and price point that don't appear to have as many flaws that would likely be worth looking into.

Easy setup, small drawbacks
on December 30, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
After unboxing and charging the batteries, I had the Arlo Pro 2’s up and running in less than 5 minutes each. So far the battery life has been decent but there’s no way I’ll get 6 months. I have these inside with views of exterior doors. One gets little foot traffic and the battery is still at 74% after several weeks. The other sees much more motion and it is down to 51%. I’m guessing 3 months tops. I was planning to mount them outside until I sew the reviews about cold weather wreaking havoc on batteries. Maybe these can be used outside in fairer climates or during the milder months. I’m not a huge fan of the recordings being split into 10 second clips and the only way to get constant recording is to plug in the camera which defeats the purpose. Same for setting up zones—constant power required. 7 days of free cloud recording is a nice addition as is the ability to add a usb stick for local storage. Tweaking the settings, while not difficult, can be time consuming to get these set to your preferences. Recording quality during the day is excellent but the night vision is just acceptable. Geofencing works great so you don’t get bombarded with notifications while you’re at hom. All in all these are good to very good interior cameras but the app can be a bit wonky to work with and the cold weather issues leave me wishing for just a bit more.

Great speaker and Alexa works well
on November 15, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
The Megablast is a great sounding speaker that gets very loud (93 dB) without distorting. It’s quite heavy so even though it’s “portable” you will definitely know you’re hauling it around. I highly recommend the power up base for convenience and because charging is a bit wonky without it (the charging port is located on the bottom under a flap). Alexa works flawlessly except when the volume is high which is to be expected. As of right now, UE and Amazon are teaming up to give you 3 free months of Amazon Music Unlimited Family Plan which is a nice bonus. Unlike prior UE speakers, there’s no party mode over Bluetooth but it is available as long as you are on WiFi. Setting up the speaker is very easy when using the app and direct Bluetooth pairing is painless. The only thing I’d fault with this unit is the seeming inability to adjust the bass, mid and treble levels. Even a basic equalizer would be nice to have. At higher volumes the bass tends to drop off and the sound gets too tweeter heavy for my tastes. Putting the speaker nearer a wall or corner alleviates this some but that’s not always ideal. The 360 degree sound output is quite handy and I’m looking forward to using this during pool season, especially since it’s waterproof. Overall I’ve been quite impressed and would highly consider buying another one in the near future.

Good cordless vac, needs small changes
on November 7, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
I’ve been using the Hoover React cordless stick vacuum for a week or so and have been very impressed with the cleaning power and battery life. I can vacuum the entire upstairs of my home (3 bedrooms, large bonus room, 2 bathrooms and laundry room) at least twice without recharging. The smaller head size lets me get into places my larger corded vac simply can’t get to. The self-changing motor speed depending on the surface being cleaned took a few minutes to get used to, but it seems to adjust the suction appropriately and quickly as flooring types change between rooms.
The multitude of attachments (including my favorite the powered stair head) make this a formidable tool in my cleaning arsenal. My dog doesn’t shed a lot but the power of this machine leads me to believe pet hair wouldn’t be a match for it. Having a large dust reservoir means emptying doesn’t have to constantly be on your mind (I’ve had other battery vacs with small bins that would fill and clog very fast). While it’s not as powerful as my corded vacuum from the big “D”, it comes reasonably close for a battery operated machine. The convenience and light weight is a trade-off for slightly less suction and that’s a sacrifice I’m usually willing to make.
A couple of things I dislike about this vacuum are that it is not free-standing, making it mandatory to use the included wall mounted storage hook. The included attachment organizer that clips to the wall hook isn’t really sufficient as it will only hold 2 attachments and there are at least 5 in the box. There is a clip that supposedly lets you keep a couple of attachments handily attached to the vacuum itself, but I’ve found it doesn’t hold securely and gets annoying very quickly as it continually wants to detach. Also, the battery charger is excessively large for what it does, making the storage footprint for the machine even larger. Finally, having to either constantly hold or double tap the trigger to keep it running seems like an unnecessary requirement where a simple on/off switch would be just fine.
This is my third cordless vacuum and is currently in second place as my favorite overall. If it came with a second battery pack, a smaller charging option and had a free-standing option, it would easily jump to first. However, just speaking in terms of cleaning power and ease of use, the Hoover React is tops.

It's ok for what it is
on November 1, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
The DEEBOT M81 is an entry-level robot that tries to set itself apart from the competition by adding features but it unfortunately omits some of the biggest necessities on its way and misses the mark on some basic operations. First off, I love the look and feel of the M81. It’s sleek and seems well built. However, shortly after unboxing, I started to realize this little guy wouldn’t be a breeze to get up and going. For some strange reason, Ecovacs decided not to build in support for 5 gHz wi-fi signals. During setup, I kept getting errors and failures based on wi-fi issues. I had to go into the settings for my Velop to shut off the 5 gHz band before I could get the setup completed. This is an issue that shouldn’t be necessary in today’s exploding market of smart devices, especially in the case of one that’s supposed to be simple and save me time like this bot.
Anyway, after setup the vacuum worked basically like my old bot that is used upstairs. It zigs and zags and usually misses spots and gets itself hung up on stuff. Remember, even though robotic vacuums have been out for a while, the technology is still in its infancy (and don’t expect cleaning performance on par with your normal vacuum as that’s really not what these things are designed to do). The obstacle detection sensors on this bot are far and away worse than on my competitive model though. Sometimes it will slow down and barely touch an item while the next time it will slam into the same object at ramming speed. Unlike competitors, no virtual barriers are included (nor could I find any to purchase) so if there’s somewhere you don’t want to be vacuumed, start building your own.
This bot uses dual rotating brushes which dies seem to help it pick up more dirt and debris. Unfortunately, that also doubles the chances of it catching a cord, curtain or bed skirt and getting itself hung up.
One of the features I was excited about was the ability of this machine to mop. Having a dual-role machine is substantially better than having a dedicated vacuum and separate mopping robot. If Ecovacs could pull it off, that truly would put this machine in a class above. Unfortunately, I was underwhelmed. The machine doesn’t really “mop” anything, it simply runs a dampened cloth around in its wandering pattern. The built-in reservoir holds enough water for 10 minutes or so of running around. Remember that part about no virtual barriers? Yup, when in mopping mode you will likely end up with a damp rug or part of your carpet. And the suction from this machine is nowhere near enough to pull that moisture back out so you will be forced to get out another cleaning utensil of some sort to clean up the soggy mess your “helper” left behind.
While the included remote is a neat add-on, I simply do not want or need another tiny remote to keep up with. Since the bot is app controlled, I think the remote is a gimmick at best and a waste at worst.
The M81 is not all bad. For an entry-level machine, it does an admirable job at vacuuming. Once it’s set up, programming to clean at specific times is relatively painless. It is substantially quieter than other machines in this segment and the dust collection bin is larger. Run times are about average and it will return “home” to recharge when it senses the need (although watching the return process can be comical since there is no GPS mapping feature on lower-end bots). Perhaps a software update can remedy the sensor issues and adding the ability to use virtual barriers would improve the usefulness greatly. Until then though, I wouldn’t recommend this machine as there are others on the market at this price point that don’t have these issues.

Easy setup glaring omissions
on October 23, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
The Chamberlain MyQ Smart Garage Hub could be great. Could be except for a few major omissions. First the good. Setup for this unit is very easy and almost foolproof as long as you follow the directions. Make sure you have a 2.4 ghz router as it won't connect to the 5 ghz band. The sensor attaches to the garage door with Velcro strips or screws. I chose the Velcro and it seems to hold very well. Plugged in the hub and within 5 minutes I had it connected, app downloads and ready to connect to my opener. It found the right code on the first try and was operating in another couple of minutes. I easily set up alerts to let me know when the door was opened and closed at various times of the day or if it was inadvertently left open after the last car left in the mornings. So far so good. Then I found the major sticking points.
First, there's no HomeKit support unless you buy an additional piece of hardware...for $70! Why make me buy yet another thing to enable what should be baked in?? So I could let that slide and count it as a slight nuisance to have to open the app separately from my Home app and not be able to use voice control.
But then there's a bigger issue. When closing the door using the app, a really bright light flashes and an overly annoying siren beeps incessantly for several seconds before the door starts to move and continues until it's closed. There is no way to shut this off or even adjust the volume. I have a bedroom directly over the garage and you can clearly hear the siren blaring in there...as can the rest of the neighborhood. I understand that's likely a safety thing like the backup alarms on trucks and equipment but seriously it's terrible and will wake whoever is trying to sleep. Give me the option to at least take it down a few decibels! I'm thinking about trying to wrap the thing in some sort of sound deadening material but then I worry the signal won't pass through to my opener. Maybe there will be an update at some point to resolve that issue. Otherwise I don't think I'll get nearly the use out of it that I was hoping.

BISSELL JetScrub Pet Lightweight Upright Carpet Cleaner was designed by pet owners with busy lives who are more than familiar with the messes pets leave behind. This less than 14-pound, lightweight machine is easy to grab when those inevitable stains strike, and its compact design also makes it perfect for cleaning rugs and smaller carpeted areas in condos and apartments. LED headlights illuminate hidden stains, and the CleanShot pretreater works with the included PET PRO OXY Urine Eliminator formula to tackle the toughest pet stains. The XL DirtLifter PowerBrush has more than twice the tufts of bristles than the competitive lightweight carpet cleaner to lift and remove embedded stains. You’ll be left with dry carpets in about 30 minutes* with JetScrub Pet’s Express Clean Mode, and the EZ Clean Up design makes maintaining the machine after use a breeze. And JetScrub Pet doesn't just clean up after pets, it helps save them, too! BISSELL proudly supports BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission to help save homeless pets. When you buy a BISSELL product, you help save pets, too. We’re proud to design products that help make pet messes, odors and pet homelessness disappear.

Does this clean hard floor surfaces as well?

It will if you purchase the optional hard surface roller and nozzle. Using the carpet roller won't work as the brushes won't come into enough contact with hard surfaces to clean properly. The set comes with two bottles of multi-surface cleaner and is relatively inexpensive.

How does this system work without the monthly monitoring. Can I get alerts on my phone without the monitoring?

Essentially, without the monitoring you have little more than a noise-maker. You cannot get alerts on your phone or otherwise "self-monitor" the system. If no one is home when an alarm sounds, you will have no way of knowing it happened. If a bad guy comes in, your only hope is that the noise will scare him away.

Keep floors dirt-free with this iRobot Roomba robot vacuum. Its AeroForce three-stage cleaning system agitates, extracts and suctions to eliminate stubborn dirt, and its iAdapt navigation feature uses multiple sensors for precise mapping and vacuuming. This iRobot Roomba robot vacuum includes a Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacon device for automated room-to-room cleaning.

I'm restating my former question in a more direct manner, concerning damage to BASEBOARDS and WOOD Furniture legs not wood floors, by the side bristles on the Roomba. Did the side bristles cause damage to these areas?

I've got the 690 and haven't noticed issues with the bristles harming my baseboards or furniture legs. I would assume the 877 has similar bristles. Damage is much more likely from direct strikes by the body of the machine.

Complete your cleaning routine with this Shark IONFLEX vacuum. Its 2x ION power pack system includes two LiIon batteries to provide backup power and longer run time, and it bends to reach floors under low-lying furniture thanks to its MultiFLEX technology. Convert this Shark IONFLEX vacuum into a handheld vac to clean ceilings and small corners.

How long does each battery charge last during use?

In real-world use, expect to get 8-10 minutes on max clean and about double that on standard. Since there are two batteries included, total run-time should be near 20 minutes on max and over 40 on standard which has been more than sufficient for my uses.

Are there wireless rear speakers that can be added ?

Nope, not as far as I can tell. Just the sound bar and wireless subwoofer.

Yes, you can stream from any Bluetooth device directly to the system. It also is Google Cast enabled if that fits your needs.
