Decent vacuum, just not for me
on July 25, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
First off, I might have a small vacuum cleaner problem...I'm not necessarily a neat freak, but the Roomba 690 came in as the sixth machine in my cleaning arsenal. Unfortunately, it will likely be relegated to last place, no matter how many I have. Why? It's not very smart, can't seem to manage to find its way around without manual assistance, and gets stuck in nearly every room of the house. When it's not stuck on curtains, cords, bedskirts, under chairs, etc., the cleaning pattern is erratic. It zigs and zags, covering the same area multiple times while totally ignoring others. I really tried to love this machine and thought it would be a real time saver. However, I cannot run it unsupervised (which is kinda the point) since I know there is no way it will not get stuck. Using the virtual wall might help, but only one is included in the box and buying enough to keep the robot away from "danger" areas would simply be cost-prohibitive, not to mention totally cluttering up the floor with gadgets. Doesn't add up to a simpler, cleaner home. If you have a home with wide open spaces, very large openings between every room, and nothing hanging near the floor, this machine might be good for you. In my home, however, I simply don't find it all that useful. About the only use it will get is maintaining the kitchen and den floors since I can corral it in there with the virtual wall. I will say that I didn't experience any difficulties with the initial setup that some others did. Just be sure to very carefully follow the directions and don't try to wing it.

I'm very impressed so far
on July 14, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
First things first. This machine is an absolute beast! Although there's a lot of plastic in its construction, it is quite heavy and feels substantial. Most definitely not an ultra-portable. The design is a love it or hate it kind of thing, and I actually like it quite a bit. Every time I've used it in public I've gotten questions or comments. Enough about that, on to the good stuff.
The Radeon RX 580 paired with the full HD screen make the video quality of this machine a huge step up from my last several PC's. The screen does only have a 60 Hz refresh rate, but I have noticed no choppiness or hesitation. The 8GB of dedicated video memory likely has a lot to do with that. I have found the 3 USB's and 1 thunderbolt port to be sufficient, although I haven't gotten around to trying out the full VR capabilities as of yet. Of course there's an HDMI out if that's something you're into.
In heavy use sessions, there is a noticeable amount of heat generated, but the multi-fan and multi-duct design has eliminated the possibility of throttling die to heat buildup.
Programs are snappy to open (limited more by the OS than the machine) and everything just works. The addition of a SSD would make this Omen a formidable challenger to machines costing twice as much, as I believe the HDD is a bit of a hindrance.
The sound from the onboard speakers is not theater quality but it's sufficient. Headsets sound amazing, whether wired or Bluetooth.
The red backlighting on the keyboard takes a bit of time to get used to but after that it's great. The red WASD have white backlights and you can toggle between all on, WASD only, or all off, depending on your preference or mood.
The dedicated Omen button gives you quick access to essential system performance information. There are also 6 programmable macro keys along and just off the left side of the keyboard.
HP has built a very solid mid-level machine that could easily be upgraded (SSD and a RAM bump) to make it into a real powerhouse. I've been very impressed and am excited to keep pushing the limits to see where it stops. I don't think I've gotten close yet!

Good sound/fit, if tweaked a bit could be great
on July 12, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
I have several sets of wireless earbuds from different manufacturers and each serves a different purpose. The JBL Everest fits right into that middle "sweet spot" between high-end audiophile quality and bargain basement "yard-work don't care if I lose them" pairs.
First, the clean signature JBL sound quality is definitely present (don't expect huge bass as these are earbuds after all). One big caveat here though...you absolutely MUST take the time to find a proper fit of tips and/or fins. If you don't get a good seal in your ear, they will sound tinny. However, that is very common across the earbud board in my experience.
Once the fit is dialed in, I have no trouble keeping these in my ears and they are relatively comfortable for extended listening sessions. Battery life is close to the 8 hours advertised and charging takes about 2 hours from completely dead to a full charge. I like the fact that JBL opted for a micro-USB connection built into the inline remote for charging, rather than a proprietary cable and/or a charging port in an earpiece--so much simpler and easier.
Now for the downsides. These headphones are not sweat proof which takes them out of my arsenal for exercising or working outside. Bummer. There is no included shirt clip to keep things in place. Others have this and I have grown to rely on it heavily. A small thing that others may not care about, but why not throw one in the box. Finally, there is no way to tweak the sound via an app or otherwise, so you're kinda stuck with what the engineers think sounds best, but which may not be to your liking.

Good entry level headphones
on July 2, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
I have been fairly impressed with these little headphones. While they won't be replacing my higher priced buds, the sound quality is good and the fit is comfortable once you get the right combination of earpieces and fins. The lows are a bit lacking, but at this price point you can't really expect audiophile quality. Charging is relatively quick and, unlike some other brands, uses a ubiquitous micro USB cable instead of a proprietary connection. I've found them to last at least 5 hours between charges at varying volume levels so the advertised 6 hours doesn't seem to be a stretch. The inline remote is a tad heavy and can pull to the side, but using the included cable clip helps quite a bit. The remote works well so you don't have to dig out your phone to change tracks or volume settings. I haven't had to use them for phone calls so I can't comment on the microphone. Overall, these are a good bargain for an entry-level set of headphones that just work.

The Magnifi Mini home theater sound bar system delivers big room-filling audio and surround sound experience you’d expect from a full-size sound bar—all in an ultra-compact design that fits any space. Polk’s exclusive Voice Adjust technology dramatically increases vocal clarity and volume level for crystal clear dialogue no matter what you’re watching. Plus, our patented surround technology and Dolby Digital 5.1 decoding creates incredible room-filling surround sound all from a sound bar that is less than 15” long. Compatible with nearly all TVs, the universal sound bar works with your TV, cable box or satellite IR remote control and features simple setup in minutes with the included HDMI cable. The powerful wireless subwoofer delivers deep impactful bass to your favorite movies, TV, games, sports and music too. And if volume’s too loud during late night viewing, Night Mode lets you easily watch your favorite programs at night without waking the neighbors or other family members in your home. What’s more, bring the concert into your room with wireless music streaming via WiFi, Google Cast and Bluetooth. Whatever you do, just don’t let the MagniFi Mini’s small size fool you—this is that big Polk sound you love from a little bar.

Good sound in a small package
on June 16, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
The Polk MagniFi system has actually exceeded my expectations, especially considering its diminutive size. When I first saw it, I figured the sound would be weak and tinny but that couldn't be further from the truth. Now, will this system rattle the pictures off the walls? No. But that's not why I have it. (If that's what you're looking for, don't bother reading the rest of this review and shop on for something more fitting.) The sound from the 42" Vizio in my bedroom is severely lacking and space was a concern, so the size made the Polk a perfect fit. The remote requires direct--and I mean direct--line of sight to the soundbar or it simply won't work. The multi-color LED's on the face are supposed to inform you of all sorts of status things, but they are basically useless. Beyond these two things though, I really like this little system. The highs are crisp and the lows are warm. It is not bass heavy, but the wireless subwoofer is only 6.5" so I didn't expect too much. The mids can get a little lost, but overall the sound quality is very good. Setup is extremely simple and is helped greatly by the fact that Polk includes all the cables you could need right in the box, so no running back to the store to pick up something. That's a big plus that is no longer present in a lot of products. If the remote sensor was a bit less finicky and there was some sort of information screen in place of the LED's, I could not fault this system.

All around grill
on June 15, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
First things first...this unit is an absolute beast. By that, I mean it is HEAVY. Definitely not something that feels cheaply made. The styling is great and blends well with my other counter-top appliances. At first I opted to try to use this without downloading the app, but some of the settings can get a bit confusing, so I downloaded the app and things went swimmingly from there. The warm up time is very acceptable and there is a wide range of temperature settings depending on what you're cooking. I've been very impressed with the versatility of this machine as it can go from a griddle for pancakes to a press grill for burgers to a broiler for whatever within a matter of seconds. The dishwasher-safe cooking grates pop in and out easily, making clean up a breeze. The included "cleaning tool" is pretty well a waste and it seems like it would melt if it came close to anything hot, so I've opted against using it. Take some time to read the manual, get the app, and familiarize yourself with the settings and you'll find yourself looking for reasons to cook on this thing. I'm contemplating ordering the waffle plates to round out the potential uses for it.
--I knocked a star off for the learning curve, the fact that an app is nearly mandatory to understand all the features and the sheer heft of this unit which makes it less than portable, especially since I plan to keep it in a cabinet when not in use rather than sitting out all the time.

My first Wemo, likely my last unless things change
on May 10, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
I was really excited to install the Wemo Dimmer as the next connected device in my house. However, my excitement quickly turned to frustration and disappointment.
First, there is no HomeKit integration, so Apple users be warned that it sometimes just won't play nice with your devices and integration into your existing plans is basically out of the question.
Next, my house has a multitude of three- and four-way switches. This dimmer won't replace any of those...single-pole only...making it's usefulness go down by 90% in my particular circumstance. Once I finally decided where I wanted to and could use the dimmer (again, single pole switch locations only), I proceeded with the installation. Wired everything up in accordance with the directions, flipped on the breaker, and nothing. Thought perhaps I had inadvertently reversed the line and load wires so I swapped them and still nothing. Pulled it out, replaced the original switch and the light worked like normal.
I had another potential location chosen and decided to try that one just for giggles. Wired it up, flipped the breaker, and the switch lit up instantly. Success. Sort-of. It took multiple attempts to get the switch to connect to my wireless network (signal strength is excellent as the switch is no more than 15 feet from my router). Once it finally connected, I tried to set up some rules in the app, only to have the switch disconnect before the rule could be saved and pushed to the device. Once I finally held my mouth right and got rules saved, they worked as intended. However, using the app to control the dimmer remotely is sketchy at best. 8 out of 10 times the dimmer will initially show up as disconnected, prompting a forced restart of the app. Sometimes a hard reset of the dimmer is required to get in back online--which is far less than ideal considering the main usefulness of a wifi connected device is remote access. Once the device appears as connected (possibly after 3-4 tries) it will randomly disconnect as soon as a command is sent. This is very frustrating and it makes it impossible to be sure whether the command was actually executed.
All in all, the design is clean and attractive. As a capacative touch dimmer, it works as it should. As a wireless "smart" device, it is unreliable and misses the mark widely. I'm not sure if that is a failing of the device, the app, or a combination of the two, but either way it simply just doesn't work for my needs.
Oh, I placed the dimmer in a double-gang box with another standard switch and I was able to locate a cover plate at a big-box home improvement store. However, using shorter screws than what one would normally use for a switch was necessary as the Wemo is primarily designed for use with a screwless, snap-on designer plate.

Good idea, decent features, mediocre sound quality
on May 10, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
So I liked the idea of a waterproof speaker to use around the pool and my prior experiences with Lifeproof made this speaker a top contender. First the good:
1. The design aesthetic is very nice. Large, easy to use backlit buttons, built-in "handles" for ease of grabbing and moving around especially when holding other items, and rugged, all-weather look.
2. Lock-out switch for the buttons to keep prying hands (i.e. kids and annoying neighbors) from fiddling with the controls.
3. It's waterproof and it floats. I tried it by tossing in the pool and the speaker kept right on playing.
4. Long battery life means no need to be tethered to a power supply or risk running out of music before the party is over.
5. It has a power-out USB port so you can charge your phone/tablet/whatever if need be.
6. The dry box is a novelty for me as it's not large enough for a phone or wallet. Might come in handy if you're headed to a public place and want to stash a few bucks or a credit card in there.
7. Double sided speakers means you can set this thing down and not have to be concerned about getting the "front" facing a certain direction...less "dead spots" in the music.
Now the bad:
1. The sound quality is mediocre, at best. It can crank up fairly loud, but there is absolutely zero bottom end and the highs get muddy at higher volumes. Far below the sound quality from lesser-priced rivals in the portable speaker market.
Although there seem to be many more pros than cons, the lack of decent sound quality far outweighs all those potential positives. Bottom line, if you are looking for a waterproof speaker that puts out some noise, this would be perfect. If you care at all about making that noise sound like music, look elsewhere.

Decent for what they are
on April 12, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
For a mid-level gaming headset, the Razer Kraken v2 Pros do a fairly decent job, but don't let the name fool you--these are not "pro" quality. The audio quality is fair, but leans more to the bass-heavy side; separation is ok but not great; the 50mm drivers are a definite upgrade from the prior version's 40mm; volume is adequate; vocals and highs can get muddy. The microphone quality seems spot on and is adequately sensitive for most casual gamers. The fit can be tight and your ears will get warm in a relatively short length of time. The included cabling feels just sturdy enough to justify a premium price but just flimsy enough to make me believe it will not stand the test of time. While Razer has made improvements with the v2, unfortunately I still think these headphones are just slightly above average. On the other hand, my 12 year old nephew thinks these are the best thing since sliced bread, so perhaps I'm totally wrong in my assessment. Or I'm out of the target demographic. Either way, at this price point, I was expecting a bit more. I would tentatively recommend them for a first set of gaming headphones, but would be cautious if upgrading.

Good sound, easy connection, bulky
on March 24, 2017
Posted by: Chadwick
I pulled the XB950B1's out of the box and was immediately impressed with their heft. They felt well made and sturdy. However, that heft and the fact they don't fold makes transporting them a bit of a chore. The fact that no case is included only makes that issue worse. I knocked off a star due to this. However, the impressive sound quality and battery life make up for the bulk of this shortfall. After an initial charge (the instructions say 4 hours, in real-life it was more like 2-1/2), I turned them on and started the pairing process. It was seamless and nearly instantaneous with my iOS device. The connection has remained strong and I have noticed no dropouts or disconnection issues as of yet, which is more than I can say for other Bluetooth headphones I use. Once paired, the phone prompted me to download a couple of Sony's apps to help the headphones work "better". I only downloaded the "Headphones Connect" app which allows you to adjust the bass boost between -10 and +10. The headphones themselves have a manual switch for toggling the bass effect but the app adds another layer of boost or reduction. The app also includes some DSP effects, all of which seem to render the sound quality subpar to my ears so I leave that setting in the Off position. The fit of this set is very nice, although it does seem to be a little tight for extended periods of wear. As I wear glasses, the extra pressure can be slightly uncomfortable but there is definitely no chance these are going to slip off or shift while in use, so that's a trade-off I'm willing to have. Even without music playing, the thick foam earcups block a good bit of external noise, and although these are not noise-cancelling headphones, they are about as close as you can get without paying for that feature. The sound quality is great but it takes a little tweaking of the settings to keep it from being too bass-heavy. An increase in the bass boost muddles the highs some, but these headphones definitely weren't designed as studio monitors. They pump out sufficient volume from the 40mm drivers that I cannot imagine cranking them all the way up, and I like my music loud. Even at higher volumes, the sound doesn't seem to "leak" out where it can be heard by people around you. The battery is rated at 18 hours, and while I haven't tried stretching the battery life nearly that far, I can say that after 4 hours of moderate volume listening, the app shows the battery at about 75% charge. I tend to try to keep my batteries topped up in case I need to grab them on a moment's notice for an out-of-town trip, so that's as far down as I've let the battery drain so far. Sony includes a 3.5mm audio cable for attaching these headphones directly to the device which is supposed to extend the audio reproduction range but I have yet to try it out. For my device it would require the use of a Lightning to 3.5mm adapter which I genuinely dislike using. While having this ability is a nice added feature, I don't foresee me ever really using the cord since I bought a set of wireless headphones for a reason. If you're looking for audiophile quality sound, look elsewhere. But if you want a set of wireless cans that will pump a lot of volume (and bass you can practically feel), these Sony's are an excellent place to start.

BISSELL JetScrub Pet Lightweight Upright Carpet Cleaner was designed by pet owners with busy lives who are more than familiar with the messes pets leave behind. This less than 14-pound, lightweight machine is easy to grab when those inevitable stains strike, and its compact design also makes it perfect for cleaning rugs and smaller carpeted areas in condos and apartments. LED headlights illuminate hidden stains, and the CleanShot pretreater works with the included PET PRO OXY Urine Eliminator formula to tackle the toughest pet stains. The XL DirtLifter PowerBrush has more than twice the tufts of bristles than the competitive lightweight carpet cleaner to lift and remove embedded stains. You’ll be left with dry carpets in about 30 minutes* with JetScrub Pet’s Express Clean Mode, and the EZ Clean Up design makes maintaining the machine after use a breeze. And JetScrub Pet doesn't just clean up after pets, it helps save them, too! BISSELL proudly supports BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission to help save homeless pets. When you buy a BISSELL product, you help save pets, too. We’re proud to design products that help make pet messes, odors and pet homelessness disappear.

Does this clean hard floor surfaces as well?

It will if you purchase the optional hard surface roller and nozzle. Using the carpet roller won't work as the brushes won't come into enough contact with hard surfaces to clean properly. The set comes with two bottles of multi-surface cleaner and is relatively inexpensive.

How does this system work without the monthly monitoring. Can I get alerts on my phone without the monitoring?

Essentially, without the monitoring you have little more than a noise-maker. You cannot get alerts on your phone or otherwise "self-monitor" the system. If no one is home when an alarm sounds, you will have no way of knowing it happened. If a bad guy comes in, your only hope is that the noise will scare him away.

Its AeroForce three-stage cleaning system agitates, extracts and suctions to eliminate stubborn dirt, and its iAdapt navigation feature uses multiple sensors for precise mapping and vacuuming. This iRobot Roomba robot vacuum includes a Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacon device for automated room-to-room cleaning.

I'm restating my former question in a more direct manner, concerning damage to BASEBOARDS and WOOD Furniture legs not wood floors, by the side bristles on the Roomba. Did the side bristles cause damage to these areas?

I've got the 690 and haven't noticed issues with the bristles harming my baseboards or furniture legs. I would assume the 877 has similar bristles. Damage is much more likely from direct strikes by the body of the machine.

Complete your cleaning routine with this Shark IONFLEX vacuum. Its 2x ION power pack system includes two LiIon batteries to provide backup power and longer run time, and it bends to reach floors under low-lying furniture thanks to its MultiFLEX technology. Convert this Shark IONFLEX vacuum into a handheld vac to clean ceilings and small corners.

How long does each battery charge last during use?

In real-world use, expect to get 8-10 minutes on max clean and about double that on standard. Since there are two batteries included, total run-time should be near 20 minutes on max and over 40 on standard which has been more than sufficient for my uses.

Are there wireless rear speakers that can be added ?

Nope, not as far as I can tell. Just the sound bar and wireless subwoofer.

Yes, you can stream from any Bluetooth device directly to the system. It also is Google Cast enabled if that fits your needs.
