Great scooter but a bit heavy
on April 24, 2024
Posted by: Chadwick
I initially got the GoTrax XR Advance Commuting scooter for my daughter as a convenient way to get around her college campus. Before handing it over, I had to give it a try to see what I thought about it. From unboxing to assembled took about 20 minutes. It's not difficult, but the instructions could be much clearer. I had a bit of a time getting the brake cable into place as the instructions on that part were very vague. Pay close attention to the order of assembly or you will end up having to backtrack and remove screws to fix something you missed. Anyway, once I got it put together, charging to full took about 2-1/2 hours. There is a small light on the plug that changes from red to green to show the charge state. Nothing on the scooter itself though. Once charged, press the red button once and hte small-ish screen lights up and you're ready to go. Another press turns on the light, but I didn't have a need for that. It seems bright enough for a small scooter though. One good kick of with your foot and a press of the throttle button gets you zipping along. This scooter had no troubles with the hills in my neighborhood and the pneumatic tires and large platform made it relatively comfortable to ride. The cruise control feature takes a bit of figuring out, as does changing from first to second gear. But a little playing around is all it took. I found myself getting swarmed by the neighborhood kids on their smaller scooters who wanted a "big kid" to ride with them. This scooter is pretty fast, so it was tough to want to ride slow with them, but fun nevertheless. After a few rides, I begrudgingly gave it up to my daughter. While it folds up for storage and transport, the latch isn't the greatest and, at nearly 30 pounds, it can be somewhat cumbersome to load. That, along with the fact it does not have any convenient way to add a lock or chain made me ding it one star. Otherwise, this is a good mid-level scooter with plenty of power to spare.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Wireless connection is terrible, printer is ok
on January 19, 2024

I got this Brother printer to replace an aging inkjet printer that only got used for printing black and white documents. The printer itself is relatively compact so it will easily fit into smaller spaces and isn’t a massive eyesore. Once you get it set up (more on that later) it does print pretty quickly and documents are crisp and clear as one would from a laser printer. I like the large paper tray and the fact that the documents come out on the top of the machine rather than out the front (no more spilling documents on the floor!!). I have a few issues with this printer though which keeps me from recommending it. First, there is a single line monochrome display window that is nearly impossible to read. There is no backlighting and, as far as I can find, no way to adjust the contrast to make it readable in various lighting conditions. But by far the largest issue I have is with the wireless setup. I spent nearly two hours trying to get this thing connected using different laptops, phones, and tablets. Although the printer itself would say it was connected and online, none of my devices could reliably “see” it on the network. On the rare occasion I could connect, my device would say the printer was offline. After trying every conceivable fix and method of connecting, I finally resigned myself to using this as only a wired printer. Plugged in a USB cable to my desktop and was able to start printing. Obviously, this isn’t an ideal situation and completely defeats the purpose of having a wireless printer. I have set up countless printers in my day and never had this much trouble getting one up and running. Because of that major issue, I just can’t recommend this particular model.

Great fall and winter combo
on December 1, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
I got this set because I have never had a snow blower and have always wanted on. Plus, I was looking for a leaf blower with a little more power than the battery one I already had. This combo set looked like it would fit my needs perfectly and so far, I couldn't be more pleased.
First things first. When you unbox everything, read the assembly instructions for the snow blower carefully before starting. They aren't the best in the world but taking the time to study them a little will make assembly a whole lot less stressful. Anyway, It took less than 15 minutes to get both blowers completely put together. The batteries come with very little charge, but each one took less than 30 minutes to fully charge thanks to the rapid charger. Charging is actually a little loud because there is a built-in fan to dissipate any excess heat generated. It's not a huge deal, just something to be aware of.
The leaf blower is slightly on the heavy side, but mostly because of the massive battery. However, it is well-balanced and comfortable to use for extended periods. I tend to blow the leaves off my patio at least every other day and it usually takes about 15 minutes or so. Even with the weight, it isn't fatiguing to use. And one battery will handle that job several times before needing a recharge. The power is phenomenal on this thing! The continuously variable trigger gives you anything from a light breeze to a full-on windstorm. And if the top end isn't enough, there's a Turbo button that will ratchet up the speed to the next level...almost so much that it wants to blow out of your hand if you're not ready for it. Nothing stands a chance to lay around where it's not wanted.
We haven't had snow since I got this set so I haven't been able to really put the snow blower to the test just yet. But in my preliminary tests, it spooled up and sounded like it's going to be just as much of a beast as the leaf blower. The built-in LED headlights are a nice touch since it tends to get dark early and stay that way a long time in winter. I also like that you can adjust the direction of the snow throwing on the fly with a simple lever right below the push handle. I'm not necessarily looking for a blizzard, but I really can't wait for a decent snow to get out with this thing!

The ECOVACS DEEBOT X2 OMNI is a giant leap forward for robot vacuums. Its slimmer square-shaped design offers better edge cleaning, cornering, and maneuvering under low clearance areas and around obstacles. Add in automatic mop lifting and enhanced learning capability, and you’ll quickly discover why it’s able to go where no robot vacuum has gone before.

The best thing since sliced bread
on December 1, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
The Deebot X2 Omni is a whole other level of robotic cleaning that makes our busy lives just a little bit easier. When it came in, I was actually shocked at how large the box was. Since I got this online, I hadn’t seen one in person, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. Once unpacked, this is still a fairly large unit, so plan accordingly for an out of the way location to set up the base station. It’s not unsightly, just bulky and not something you want to look at every day.
I had some initial issues getting the robot connected to my network. It kept timing out or act like it was connected, only to immediately disconnect and make me start over. I got on a chat with the manufacturer which wasn’t much help because anything they suggested for me to do required me to use the app which is where the chat was going on. Obviously, navigating away from the chat to do something ended the conversation. So I was basically on my own. I went over the pairing and connection instructions multiple times and followed them precisely. No dice. At my wife’s suggestion, I manually turned off the robot, unplugged the base station and walked away for about 10 minutes. When I came back to try again, it was miraculously connected and I was good to go. Maybe it was a glitch or maybe it was magic. Either way, it worked.
The initial mapping run took about 10-15 minutes and was pretty accurate thanks to the laser system and AI object detection. A few clicks to add “no-go” zones and this little thing took off to do its job. (I even went back later and added new zones around Christmas trees and it was a piece of cake to do!) On the level of my home where the Deebot lives, our floors are wood, tile, and area rugs. As it moves to different surfaces, the suction power automatically adjusts for the best possible clean. I was a little skeptical at first, but the mopping pads lift up immediately upon it sensing a carpeted area, and drop right back down once its back on to a hard surface. It’s actually kind of satisfying to watch in a weird sort of way. I have it set up to vacuum and mop in the same pass, but the customizations are there to vacuum first and then go back and mop, or do either one without the other. Changing things up is super simple in the app with just a few taps.
I also have a dog and one of the cool features this machine has is the ability to turn on what they call Strategic Pet Poop Avoidance” (it’s hidden deep in the menus under Lab Features). It’s not a common occurrence for him to have an accident, but on the off chance he does, and the vacuum takes off on a scheduled run, it’s just a little peace of mind to know the robot won’t run over a mess and just spread it all over the place.
The clean and dirty water tanks in the base station are easy to remove to empty or refill and hold enough for many cleaning runs. The app will even alert you when it’s time for maintenance so you don’t ever have to wonder if there’s enough cleaning solution or whatever. I have had several robotic vacuums in the past and this one outdoes them all, not just in cleaning power, but in overall coverage and making sense in how it traverses the house. Others tend to miss spots or wander aimlessly for hours. This Deebot just gets to it and gets the job done (it still takes a while, but it’s doing a lot while it’s working). The floors end up looking almost as clean as if I had vacuumed and mopped them myself, but I don’t have to lift a finger. I highly recommend the X2 Omni!

Decent camera, worthless mounting system
on November 28, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
This is my fourth Arlo camera but my first from the “Essential” series. It will definitely be my last Essential camera and possibly even my last Arlo if this camera is any indication of how things are going to be from here on out. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly some positives here, but there is one glaring negative that outweighs everything. First, the good. Setup is super easy, especially if you already have an Arlo account. Just tap the plus sign in the app, follow a few simple steps, and you’re all done. The video quality is very good for a basic camera and the night vision is acceptable. There are plenty of tweaks in the app for adjusting motion sensitivity, recording quality, increasing battery life, etc. I find the spotlight feature to be more of a novelty on this camera as it really isn’t that bright. It does draw attention to any potential intruders that they are being recorded so it works fairly well for a deterrent. That where the good ends for me. Arlo has “updated” their app recently and in doing so moved things around to difficult to find places. What used to take a single tap now requires you to dig through menus and tabs to find what you are looking for. Also, the functionality of being able to “arm” only a single camera or choose which ones you want to use (rather than all of them) seems to have completely disappeared. Big issue for me personally. The housing is rather bulky and slightly unsightly for my taste.
But the biggest fail and what takes the rating way down is the horrific mount. It is a fixed mount with absolutely ZERO adjustment. None. (Don’t be fooled by the online tutorial which shows an adjustable ball and socket mount. That’s not what you get!) One part of the mount screws into the camera itself and the other attaches to the wall and then you click them together. The screw on part has an arrow to show you which way is up, but unfortunately, you cannot get it to point straight up because the alignment teeth are off. So, the mount to the camera itself is cockeyed which means if you mount the part to the wall level, the camera itself is crooked…and so is your video. Oh, and don’t forget, you cannot adjust it once it’s installed without removing the entire thing and starting over! Removing the camera from the mount for charging takes an act of Congress to accomplish. The camera snaps in place on the fixed wall mounting bracket and it feels like you will completely destroy the entire mount when trying to dismount the camera. It is quite possibly the worst designed mounting system I’ve ever encountered for a security camera. So, unless you have a perfect place to put the camera to point directly at the spot you want to monitor and can charge it without taking it down, you have to pony up and buy a replacement. If you decide to but one of these, take my advice and go ahead and pick up a bayonet mount at the same time. Throw out the included mount and save yourself some frustration and headache.

Love having chewy ice!
on October 27, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
I have been using the GE Opal countertop ice maker for a week or so and have had mostly positive thoughts and feelings about it. The first thing to note is that this unit is relatively large and will take up a considerable amount of space on your countertop. Unfortunately, because of the height, it will not fit under my upper cabinets (it's about a half inch too tall...ugh!) so I have had to set it up in a not so ideal location outside of the kitchen. That is really the only beef I have though. Setup is simple and the instruction manual is very clear and concise. The included side tank (which can be placed on either side) is a definite must-have. While you can use the unit without it, to add water you have to remove the ice bucket which is just a bit inconvenient. With the side tank, there is no need to do so, and the machine can make a ton of ice before needing to refill the tank. Once I got everything put where I wanted, I had the first nuggets of wonderful chewy ice within about 20 minutes. Since then, I have basically let it run nonstop. There is an automatic shutoff when the ice bin gets full or you need to add water. As melting occurs, the water drips into the holding tank to be reused. If there is enough melting (which actually seems minimal to me), the ice level will drop and the machine will kick back on so you always have a full container. Also, if you don't interact with the machine, it will pause making ice after about eight hours until you open the top door or press a button. It is relatively quiet during operation and I would estimate you can go from a n empty to full ice bin in about 3-4 hours. For a party last weekend, I was afraid there wouldn't be enough ice and the recovery time would be too long to keep up with demand, so I emptied the ice a few times into a bucket and kept it in the freezer so the machine could keep working. All of my guests loved having chewy nugget ice in their drinks on an unseasonably warm fall day. I no longer use the crushed ice function on my refrigerator, instead opting to use the ice made by the Opal all of the time. It's a winner.

Good green laptop if you temper expectations
on October 18, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
I have been using the Acer Vero laptop for several days now and have been mostly impressed but have a few small concerns. I like the fact that Acer has developed a much more Earth-friendly laptop with environmentally sound packaging, but I must say I was a bit skeptical that such a machine would be worth having in real-world situations. Honestly, I’ve been pleasantly surprised with how capable this laptop is. The specs are not out of this world, but they are decent and are more than sufficient for basic home computing. This obviously isn’t a gaming or heavy production PC but it can easily handle the typical day-to-day tasks of most households. The screen isn’t incredibly bright (and is not a touchscreen) but it is crisp and clear enough that it’s not a big deal and color reproduction is very good. The keyboard is responsive but can sometimes feel like it has a little more flex than I prefer. The reversed letters on the R and E keys are a bit tough to get used to but they are intended to remind you of the eco-conscious theme of this laptop. It’s really more of an irritation point for me, but that’s a personal preference, I guess. Having a full number pad on a laptop this size is a welcomed plus for me. The Oceanglass trackpad has a good smooth feel and is very responsive. There is a fingerprint reader in the top left corner of the pad, which initially seemed like an odd place for it but after using it, the position makes sense and is easy to use. Battery life is ok in my experience but not anything to write home about. And on that topic, I’m questioning why they chose to put a USB-C port that doesn’t allow charging is beyond me. You have to use the included charger or you’re out of luck. There also isn’t a LAN port so it’s wireless or nothing, unless you want to buy a separate dongle. In spite of these little inconveniences and irritations, this really isn’t a bad machine, especially if you’re looking for a new computer that reduces your environmental impact. Now, Windows 11 is a totally different story, but that isn’t Acer’s fault…

Fabulous kitchen addition
on October 17, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
I have had lots of blenders in my life but i have to say that this one has to be my absolute favorite because of the power, features, and versatility. I will say at the outset that this is a large bundle of food processing power so that means there is going to be a large space required for storage and use. But the added countertop space needed for this bad machine is well worth any sacrifice you have to make!
The base of the Ninja blender is hefty and exudes a sense of quality. Once you plug it in and add one of the three included attachments, the magic starts to show itself. I can honestly say I was a bit skeptical about the ability to sense what I had put into the blender and "automatically" adjust to do the job right, but I was pleasantly surprised, I have done things as varied as salsa, slicing cucumbers, and making smoothies, using all of the included accessories and this blender has yet to disappoint. The automatic "sensing" settings have been spot on and the results have been fantastic all the way around. Being able to use one base to do single serve smoothies, everyday blending/chopping, and food processing has let us get rid of three or four different machines and replace them with this one. Shark has hit it out of the park again.

Check the reviews! Missing basic stuff
on October 11, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
I got the Tapo cameras because I needed some extra coverage around the perimeter of my home and have had great luck with TP-Link devices in the past. Unfortunately, I should have done more research before pulling the trigger. First, these things are much larger than I expected. Not necessarily huge, but they are certainly not blending in anywhere and will definitely be noticed. The setup process was unnecessarily frustrating to say the least. One of the three cameras took multiple attempts just to get it to recognize my wi-fi network and then it timed out and made me start the process all over. Those kind of things just shouldn't happen. But that was just the beginning. As large as these cameras are, one would think the wi-fi reception range would be immense. Not so. It is extremely limited. I wanted to place these cameras outside my home to view the pool and patio areas, but I kept getting "low signal" messages only a few feet away from the house even though I can connect other smart devices from anywhere in my yard (and sometimes in the neighbor's!). Sigh. Back to the drawing board. I moved them to not so ideal locations where they would actually connect. That's when I realized one of the most basic features I rely on in my other camera systems is completely missing--geofencing! Yup. The only way to arm/disarm the cameras is to open the app and press a button, which sometimes works, sometimes only changes the state of one or two of the cameras, and sometimes completely fails. The Alexa integration skill doesn't seem to allow for voice commands to control the on/off function either so that's not a work around. Also, the live feeds will absolutely not show up in Google Home alongside all my other cameras so there's no way to see everything in a single app. I finally got so frustrated with these cameras I took them down and stuck them in a box. Maybe someday there will be an update to add in the missing functions and I will use them. But I'm not holding my breath. I gave the system 2 stars because the video quality is pretty good and the spotlights are a nice feature. Otherwise, I see the Tapo camera system as little more than glorified paperweights. There are lots of other, better options out there.

Great for skin therapy and relaxation
on September 22, 2023
Posted by: Chadwick
My wife and I have been using the TherabodyTheraFace mask every day for the past week or so and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We have been so enthralled that we have offered it to everyone who has come by for a visit and everyone has been impressed as well. The documentation claims you will see visible results in as little as 8 weeks for fine lines and wrinkles, but I can actually tell a slight difference in my “crow’s feet” already. I never knew light and vibration could have such an impact. After taking the mask out of the included cradle/stand it’s just a matter of slipping it over your head, adjusting the top and rear elastic bands for a comfortable fit, and long pressing a button. Then you get 9 minutes of relaxation and therapy in three different segments. The lights automatically change from red, to infrared, and blue in each part, and the vibration pattern changes as well. The mask is comfortable while wearing it and the included eye shield means you can still see and go about your business while wearing it if you so desire. I prefer to just sit still and let it work its magic during the whole thing, but to each their own. For me, the vibrating massage is the absolute best part as it eases tension and even has helped with my headaches. You get the vibration around your temples, around the eyes, and on top and back of the scalp. Trust me, it’s a wonderful feeling. If you prefer to not have the lights, there are settings for a 15-minute massage only session and you can even adjust the patterns of the massaging if you want, depending on your particular want or need for the session. If you want just a single light type, you can easily toggle through those as well. And you can turn off the vibration if that’s not your thing and just have the light therapy. Basically, you can tailor this mask to your exact preferences with just a touch of a button. The TheraFace is a sleek package that is packed with features and technology. It has gobs and gobs of LED’s that each produce the red, infrared, and blue wavelengths for a more complete therapy, the microvibration motors are perfectly placed, and the whole thing is controlled with just two buttons. Using this mask has quickly become a daily staple in my house.

This less than 14-pound, lightweight machine is easy to grab when those inevitable stains strike, and its compact design also makes it perfect for cleaning rugs and smaller carpeted areas in condos and apartments. LED headlights illuminate hidden stains, and the CleanShot pretreater works with the included PET PRO OXY Urine Eliminator formula to tackle the toughest pet stains. The XL DirtLifter PowerBrush has more than twice the tufts of bristles than the competitive lightweight carpet cleaner to lift and remove embedded stains. You’ll be left with dry carpets in about 30 minutes* with JetScrub Pet’s Express Clean Mode, and the EZ Clean Up design makes maintaining the machine after use a breeze. And JetScrub Pet doesn't just clean up after pets, it helps save them, too! BISSELL proudly supports BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission to help save homeless pets. When you buy a BISSELL product, you help save pets, too. We’re proud to design products that help make pet messes, odors and pet homelessness disappear.

Does this clean hard floor surfaces as well?

It will if you purchase the optional hard surface roller and nozzle. Using the carpet roller won't work as the brushes won't come into enough contact with hard surfaces to clean properly. The set comes with two bottles of multi-surface cleaner and is relatively inexpensive.

Upgrade your entertainment setup with the Core Innovations 150” Home Theater Projector - White (CPJ600WHBY). Stream videos, view photos or play your favorite games by linking your preferred device to this projector via numerous versatile connections, including HDMI, VGA, USB, Micro SD and AV.

Does this product only work in the dark, or does it work in day time light too?

Only in the dark from my experience. Any ambient light overpowers the low light output of the projector unfortunately.

How does this system work without the monthly monitoring. Can I get alerts on my phone without the monitoring?

Essentially, without the monitoring you have little more than a noise-maker. You cannot get alerts on your phone or otherwise "self-monitor" the system. If no one is home when an alarm sounds, you will have no way of knowing it happened. If a bad guy comes in, your only hope is that the noise will scare him away.

Clean fur, dust and dander quickly with this Hoover REACT cordless pet vacuum. Integrated sensors automatically adjust the level of suction and the brush roll speed to handle different floor types. This Hoover REACT cordless pet vacuum uses a long-lasting lithium battery, so you can clean the whole room without a recharge.

Does vacuum only clean one room on a full charge?

I can easily clean 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms, laundry room and large bonus room on a single charge, depending on soil level I can sometimes do this twice before recharging.

Keep floors dirt-free with this iRobot Roomba robot vacuum. Its AeroForce three-stage cleaning system agitates, extracts and suctions to eliminate stubborn dirt, and its iAdapt navigation feature uses multiple sensors for precise mapping and vacuuming. This iRobot Roomba robot vacuum includes a Virtual Wall Lighthouse beacon device for automated room-to-room cleaning.

I'm restating my former question in a more direct manner, concerning damage to BASEBOARDS and WOOD Furniture legs not wood floors, by the side bristles on the Roomba. Did the side bristles cause damage to these areas?

I've got the 690 and haven't noticed issues with the bristles harming my baseboards or furniture legs. I would assume the 877 has similar bristles. Damage is much more likely from direct strikes by the body of the machine.

Complete your cleaning routine with this Shark IONFLEX vacuum. Its 2x ION power pack system includes two LiIon batteries to provide backup power and longer run time, and it bends to reach floors under low-lying furniture thanks to its MultiFLEX technology. Convert this Shark IONFLEX vacuum into a handheld vac to clean ceilings and small corners.

How long does each battery charge last during use?

In real-world use, expect to get 8-10 minutes on max clean and about double that on standard. Since there are two batteries included, total run-time should be near 20 minutes on max and over 40 on standard which has been more than sufficient for my uses.

Nope, not as far as I can tell. Just the sound bar and wireless subwoofer.
