Good looking and fabulous sound to boot
on September 11, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick

Got the Bose Soprano frames about a week ago and have been blown away by them. After unboxing, I immediately noticed how premium they looked and felt. Their light weigh belies the mass of technology and fantastic sound buried in the arms. I slipped them on and they were quite comfortable and stylish looking. The polarized lenses could be slightly darker for my taste, but they definitely block out the harshness of bright sunlight (other lenses are supposedly available directly from Bose, including prescription ones, but I just haven’t checked them out yet to see what’s offered). Clarity is excellent with no noticeable distortion, even at the edges of the field of view. Now, on to the fun stuff.
After downloading the Bose app, the Sopranos connected quickly and easily, and I was listening to music in a matter of minutes. I was amazed by the volume, fullness, and overall sound quality from the open-ear design. The sound easily rivals some of my higher-end dedicated headphones. But even with all that great sound, you can still easily hear what’s going on around you, and the best part, no one knows you are even listening to music (unless you’re really cranking it in a quiet environment). You can control the volume by sliding your finger along the right arm. It takes a little getting used to but once you get it, it’s very intuitive. You can also double tap to access Siri if you’ve got an iPhone. Getting to a full charge takes about an hour and I’d say the advertised 5.5 hour battery life is pretty close to spot on.
The Sopranos come with a hard, protective case which is really nice. I will say there is no notch or cutout in the case which would give you the ability to charge the battery while the sunglasses are in the case. Not a deal breaker, just an observation. Also, from the scant documentation that comes with them, and what little I can determine from online resources, they don’t appear to be waterproof or resistant so that’s something to keep in mind if you sweat a lot or plan to use them in any kind of moist environment. Overall, I can’t say enough good things about the Bose frames. I’d recommend them to anyone.

Awesome machine!

I got my Ninja Foodi system last week and have used it just about every day since. The main jar is plenty big for blending larger quantities of food and the stacked blades (removeable for super easy clean up) ensure consistent and fast results. I have shredded chicken, blended sauces, and chopped frozen fruits, all with ease and in amazingly short times. Like other Ninja blenders, this unit has the Auto-IQ system which gives you preset blending profiles depending on what you are making. As always, they work flawlessly. The included personal sized blending cup is perfect for making smoothies and creating perfect blends for smoothie bowls. My teenage daughter loves smoothies and milkshakes and has mastered the art of this sized cup. She particularly likes that a drinkable lid is included so she can go from blender to belly with little hassle. The blade assembly and lid also fit the smaller jar which Ninja calls the "Power Nutri Bowl" which has a nifty twist system that allows you to turn small paddles on the inside of the bowl while blending (or drinking if need be) to move your ingredients off the sides and into the blades. It's especially handy when making sticky nut butters or using less liquid for smoothies you want to be able to eat with a spoon. This unit also comes with a storage lid that fits the smaller vessels in case you need to keep any leftovers. It also comes with a cleaning brush to get into the nooks and crannies of the blades without putting your fingers in peril. I haven't tried making dough in it yet but I intend to this weekend. If the dough blade works half as well as the rest of the system, I'm sure I'll be pleased.

Quiet and easy to use
on August 27, 2020

The Philips Norelco nose trimmer is a breeze to use and has replaced three other single purpose trimmers cluttering up my vanity drawer. It is surprisingly quiet, no matter which of the three attachments you use. The heads twist on and off easily and are washable, making maintenance quite simple. It comes with a short bristled brush to help with hairs that don't wash out. The motor seems powerful enough to easily do the job it's designed to do.I only have two small issues with the trimmer. First, neither of the included eyebrow "combs" allow for a close enough cut for my liking. If you use it without the comb installed, I fear there won't be any eyebrow left. Second, although this is touted as a rechargeable trimmer, and it comes with a rechargeable battery, there is no way to actually charge the battery unless you happen to already have a AA battery charger. So the marketing isn't untrue, just not completely forthcoming on the limitations. Both of these are relatively minor issues, but enough for me to knock a star off the rating.

Hybrid sensor, must pay for notifications
on July 22, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
The Ecobee smart sensor for doors and windows is marketed as a part of their home monitoring/security portfolio. Because I'm not really interested in paying a monthly charge for basic notifications and functionality, that's not my use case.
Design-wise, these sensors are much like others on the market; they mount with double-sided tape and are essentially a magnetic switch. What sets them apart, and makes them useful in my setup, is the built-in motion sensor.
I paired the sensors to my Ecobee thermostat so it can have even more pieces of information to work with in deciding how to heat and cool my home (I also have a pair of the regular smart sensors which relay motion and ambient temperature readings). For that, these guys have worked well.
As I said at the beginning, these really are designed to be used in a home monitoring setup. If you pay the $5-$10 a month for Ecobee's Haven service, you can get notifications when the sensor identifies movement or the door/window is opened. They can also trigger an Ecobee camera if you have one. As I said, I'm unwilling to pay for yet another monthly subscription to get the basic functionality almost all of Ecobee's competitors provide for free. Add to that the relatively high price point of the hardware and you can get into the stratosphere pretty quickly. But for my purposes, it works.

SmartSensor provides comfort to you and your family in the rooms that matter most while saving you energy and money. Through infrared technology, SmartSensor detects when a room is occupied and communicates that information wirelessly to your smart thermostat from up to a range of 60 feet prompting automatic temperature adjustments for comfort.

Nice add on for smart thermostat
on July 22, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
The Ecobee Smart sensors were an addition to my Ecobee smart thermostat (they do not work with other brands) to help make it smarter. Tap the plus sign in the app, scan the QR code, decide which thermostat (or camera) to pair it with, and you're done. Basically, these little guys detect the ambient temperature of the room they are placed in and also detect motion from about 15 feet or so. They then relay that information to the thermostat to give it more information on whether the system should be on or off. They have a built-in battery so you can put them wherever you like and they blend in quite well. If you have one of Ecobee's cameras (and pay for it to be functional through their subscription service), they can relay motion information and send alerts.

Good camera, must pay to use all features
on July 22, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
I got the Ecobee smart camera to replace one that recently died. The advertised "smart" features were a definite draw which I quickly found out came at a price.
First, the good. After unboxing, I noticed the heft of the camera. It is solid, feels well made, and has a sleek look. The adjustable stand can double as a wall mount if necessary. The power cord is pretty long, which was great for me because of the location I needed the camera in relation to the nearest outlet (I'm using it in my garage.) It has Alexa functionality, which basically lets it act like a satellite Echo device (it connects to your nearest device and routs commands to that device to perform then reports back)..
Setup through the Ecobee app was a breeze and I was up and running in just a few minutes. I didn't use Homekit because the app seemed to offer more functionality. Picture quality is about as good as I've seen. The ability to pan and tilt (digitally) is great and one of the features I wanted for my application as my old camera did the same. There is a tracking feature that zooms in and follows what the camera perceives to be a person. A neat feature, but one you'll have to pay to use. Which leads me to the bad.
In order for this camera to do pretty much anything, Ecobee requires you to enroll in a subscription plan they call "Haven" for a minimum of $5 a month. Without doing so, there is no recording (not even a snapshot), no notifications, no tracking, no geofencing (Ecobee calls it Autopilot), no nothing except being able to view a live picture (you can pan, tilt and zoom in the live view). All of the advertised "smart" features are locked out. Unless you want to keep your phone on and the app running all the time, you're out of luck in catching anything going on. There isn't even a way to record locally. So much for a "security" camera! Other competitors at least offer basic notifications and 24 hours of free cloud storage. Unless you are prepared to fork over more cash every month to make an otherwise decent camera remotely functional, I'd take a pass.

"Must-have" accessory for a Surface Go 2
on July 16, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
The Signature Type cover was the perfect addition to my Surface Go 2. Fitment is perfect and installation is super-simple. It just magnetically snaps into place. While the keys may be small for some, this is a tablet keyboard that isn't designed to replace a full-sized desktop keyboard. That being said, the keys are large enough and spaced sufficiently apart that I don't find myself missing keystrokes or feel overly cramped while typing. If you turn on the backlighting for the keys, there are three different intensity levels to match whatever lighting situation you might be in, from barely visible to nice and bright. The touchpad is responsive and accurate with a glass-like surface for smooth cursor movements. Having the ability for the keyboard to lay flat on the table or slightly elevated is a great feature and, even in the elevated position, the keyboard still feels solid. The exterior of the cover is a nice feeling faux leather that is soft to the touch and lends a little luxury to an otherwise basic piece of electronic equipment. After using the Signature Type Cover for the past couple of weeks, I can't justify giving it anything other than 5 stars.

Perfect for teleworker on the go
on July 13, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
I have been using the Surface Go 2 for a couple of weeks and have set it up basically as a mirror of my work computer so I can use it while traveling and teleworking without having the bulk of a traditional laptop. I had tried this with my tablet from another manufacturer but it didn't play nice with my IT department's requirements for some reason. The Surface Go 2 has worked flawlessly. (Note that this is a Wi-Fi only unit so if you need LTE, you'll have to step up in price point to get that functionality. I hotspot off my phone and have no issues.) After the initial setup, which includes a face recognition sign-in option, the interface looked almost identical to my Windows 10 PC so there really was no learning curve at all as far as the OS went. Do note, if you want to use any browser other than Edge or download apps from outside the official Microsoft app store, you have to do a one-way switch from "S mode" to Windows 10 Home or Pro. Browser selection wasn't a major issue for me and, since I'm using this machine mainly for work purposes, I haven't had the need to step outside the walled garden and thus haven't made the switch.
The screen is bright and vibrant although the resolution is slightly lower than the competition. In real-world situations however, the vast majority of users will never notice the very slight difference. If you can tell the difference, you're probably not looking for a tablet like this anyway because your needs are likely greater than the Pentium Gold and 8GB of RAM can handle. Touchscreen inputs work flawlessly. I would highly recommend adding on the Signature Type Cover if you need to do a decent amount or more of typing. It is well worth the additional cost.
In my use, I tend to get about 9 hours of battery life, which is less than the 10 Microsoft advertises, but I keep the screen brightness almost all the way up and am typically working in several programs at once. Different users could probably eek out a bit more life. As for charging, while I like the magnetic connection, that means one more proprietary cord I have to pack around to keep my devices charged. If you lose or break that, you're out of luck until you can buy another one since they aren't as ubiquitous as other charging solutions. Not a major deal, but something to consider.
I love the built-in kickstand on the back which adjusts from flat against the body to something like 160 degrees. Makes it much easier to participate in video conferences and, when coupled with the type cover, makes it feel more like a laptop rather than a tablet.
Overall, I've been very impressed with the capabilities of the Surface Go 2. It has met, if not exceeded, my needs for working remotely. I would definitely recommend.

Great picture, AI needs help
on May 8, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
This is my first ever Hisense TV and my first smart TV on the AndroidTV platform. I'm pretty impressed with both. The Quantum Dot technology is amazing for picture quality and clarity. I dare say this panel outperforms my larger (and significantly more expensive) main screen in my den. The color rendition is spot on once tweaked to account for the lighting in the room. Viewing angle isn't a problem where this TV is set up but there is a setting buried in the menus to accommodate wider angles if needed. There are lots of settings you can alter to make this TV really shine in your space. One of the first things I had to figure out how to do was to shut off the AI control which wanted to automatically adjust the picture for what it perceived I was watching. While this could be a neat thing, the technology simply isn't there in this unit. In a single television episode, the algorithm would trigger up to 45 changes to "optimize" for whatevere it thought was on-screen, with each one causing a slight but noticeable pause in the picture and sound. It quickly became annoying. Once off, I have had no other issues with the performance of the screen. However, I have noticed an occasional crashing of apps. Sometimes the app will restart itself after a few seconds, sometimes it will hang completely and require me to exit and relaunch, while other times a complete shutdown of the TV is required. I don't know if that is a Hisense or Android issue. It's not something that happens every day, but I thought it was worth noting. The sound quality of the built-in speakers is actually pretty decent which is quite unusual in my experience. Although I have a soundbar attached to this TV, I believe I could easily do without it in this application (it is in the master bedroom so I'm not looking for home theater-type sound). I was able to quickly and easily connect to my Alexa account so I could have voice control. A novelty feature to be sure since the remote is intuitive and responsive. As for the remote, be sure to dig in the settings and pair the remote to the TV. That will eliminate the line of sight requirement and makes using the remote even easier since you don't have to aim it at the TV. One final thought, there is a built-in cord management system in the legs (which have the ability attach in two positions for ease of placement on whatever furniture you may have) which could stand to be a bit larger. One side has only the power cord through it but the other has 3 HDMI and a coax. Only three really fit in there and the last one is just barely holding on. Again, not a major issue, but something to know about.

Fabulous smoothie maker!
on May 1, 2020
Posted by: Chadwick
from Paducah, KY, USA
My teenage daughter loves to make smoothies. Lots of them. So many, in fact, I decided to get her a machine of her own that she could use to her heart's content...and leave my blender alone so I might be able to use it to cook a meal or two! The Ninja Professional Plus has been amazing all the way around. Having already had several other of their products in my kitchen, I was pretty confident the build quality would be good and Ninja has again lived up to their name. The blender is solid, heavy, and powerful. The multi-tiered blades make short work of frozen fruits and the hardest ice to make what my daughter describes as a fantastic smoothie. She swears the Ninja made ones rival those she gets from our neighborhood smoothie shop. The flip-up pour spout built into the lid is a neat feature that I didn't think much of at first, but after a couple of uses it has made a big difference in the amount of mess that hits (or rather doesn't hit) my counter tops! Clean up of the machine is simplified by the removable blades. While it's not as full featured as my other Ninja blender, it isn't supposed to be. It packs plenty of power and the AutoIQ buttons take the guesswork out of whatever you decide to make. I'm impressed again by Ninja.

BISSELL JetScrub Pet Lightweight Upright Carpet Cleaner was designed by pet owners with busy lives who are more than familiar with the messes pets leave behind. This less than 14-pound, lightweight machine is easy to grab when those inevitable stains strike, and its compact design also makes it perfect for cleaning rugs and smaller carpeted areas in condos and apartments. The XL DirtLifter PowerBrush has more than twice the tufts of bristles than the competitive lightweight carpet cleaner to lift and remove embedded stains. You’ll be left with dry carpets in about 30 minutes* with JetScrub Pet’s Express Clean Mode, and the EZ Clean Up design makes maintaining the machine after use a breeze. And JetScrub Pet doesn't just clean up after pets, it helps save them, too! BISSELL proudly supports BISSELL Pet Foundation and its mission to help save homeless pets. When you buy a BISSELL product, you help save pets, too. We’re proud to design products that help make pet messes, odors and pet homelessness disappear.

Does this clean hard floor surfaces as well?

It will if you purchase the optional hard surface roller and nozzle. Using the carpet roller won't work as the brushes won't come into enough contact with hard surfaces to clean properly. The set comes with two bottles of multi-surface cleaner and is relatively inexpensive.

How does this system work without the monthly monitoring. Can I get alerts on my phone without the monitoring?

Essentially, without the monitoring you have little more than a noise-maker. You cannot get alerts on your phone or otherwise "self-monitor" the system. If no one is home when an alarm sounds, you will have no way of knowing it happened. If a bad guy comes in, your only hope is that the noise will scare him away.

Keep floors dirt-free with this iRobot Roomba robot vacuum. I'm restating my former question in a more direct manner, concerning damage to BASEBOARDS and WOOD Furniture legs not wood floors, by the side bristles on the Roomba. Did the side bristles cause damage to these areas?

I've got the 690 and haven't noticed issues with the bristles harming my baseboards or furniture legs. I would assume the 877 has similar bristles. Damage is much more likely from direct strikes by the body of the machine.

How long does each battery charge last during use?

In real-world use, expect to get 8-10 minutes on max clean and about double that on standard. Since there are two batteries included, total run-time should be near 20 minutes on max and over 40 on standard which has been more than sufficient for my uses.
