The Intel EVO platform with 13th Gen Intel Core i7 Processor, Intel Iris Xe graphics, 16GB RAM and 512GB PCIe 4.0 SSD deliver superb performance, and there’s a long-lasting 90 Wh battery and latest Wifi-6E built-in. Solid, sexy and a great price
on June 17, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
There’s a lot to like about this laptop and very little to complain about. The only qualification is to understand that it’s not intended to be a gaming computer. It is, however, an excellent production machine and can easily stream beautiful, high-rez videos with Dolby Atmos sound.
The build quality is very good, and it’s built to military specs. The solid-feeling, aluminum case is sleek and attractive, but the grey color does easily show fingerprints. At 3.5 lbs. it’s not a featherweight, but that weight is reasonable considering the power built in. The latest 12-core Intel I7-13700H processor is paired with 16 GB of fast DDR5 RAM and a wicked-fast M2 SSD drive. It's well-outfitted with ports. There’s a high-speed USB type A (hurray), two USB C / Thunderbolt ports, AV in/out, and a full-size HDMI port. Top this off with a gorgeous 14.5” 2400 x 1800 OLED screen that can run at 120 Hz, and you have a very capable computer. It’s also Intel EVO certified which means it has face recognition and resumes almost instantly from sleep mode. I found the face recognition to be quick and flawless in all kinds of lighting. The FHD camera is also a step above many competitors. Basically, it’s well-appointed with high-quality hardware.
There’s very little to complain about. There’s no SD card reader built-in, so carry an adapter if that’s a must. As mentioned, this Zenbook is not built to be a gamer. The Intel Iris Xe graphics will easily handle any production software and video streaming, but mid to high-end games will need to have the resolution and quality level backed down to get a decent frame rate. Also, the M2 SSD drive is only 512 GB. The good news is that you can change it out to a larger drive. The not-as-good news is that nothing else is upgradeable … all other components are soldered in place.
The bottom line is that this Zenbook is a great computer at a seemingly unbeatable price. It may well be the best bang for the buck in its class for production work as well as watching and streaming high-quality video.

Solid mid-level performance
on June 3, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
The appearance of the new XPS 8960 is beautifully understated, and it can be configured to be anything from a basic office computer to a high-end gamer. This version is a good production machine or a basic to mid-level gamer. It’s well-appointed with I/O ports. There are 9 USB ports (7 high-speed), a card reader, a mic/headphone jack, an ethernet connection, a full array of audio jacks, and multiple monitor connections. It’s fully up to date on wireless ability having WIFI 6 and BT 5. Add to this a 13th Gen Raptor Lake I7-13700 16-core processor, 16GB of DDR5 memory, a blazingly-fast 512GB M2 SSD, and a 2TB HDD, and you have a solid system.
There are some shortcomings as well … especially if you’re looking to upgrade or for intensive use. Sitting on that great processor is a small, pancake cooler. It spools up often and quite audibly. When under heavy load, the core temperatures quickly shoot very high before settling back into the 60-70 C range as the processor throttles back speed. The SSD boot drive is wicked fast, but 512GB is the starting point these days. There is an empty M2 slot, so it would be easy to add another drive. Two 8GB modules occupy both DIMM slots, so adding system RAM means replacing not adding. The 8GB Dell RTX3050 is an entry-level graphics card for gaming. It does have ray tracing, so will run most, but not all, games at 1080P with a high frame rate. The new XPS 8960 series is most typically available with a 750 or 1000 watt power supply, but this unit has a 460 watt Dell PS, so check if you plan to change to a power-hungry graphics card.
As it stands, this is a solid, attractive mid-level workhorse. If it has all you want in a computer, it’s a good choice, but expandability is not its long suit. With that said, I would not hesitate to recommend it to others.

A great mouse made better
on May 20, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
Logitech’s MX series is my go-to favorite for both keyboards and mice. I use the MX Keys keyboard and the MX Master mouse on my desktop every day. I also have the MX Anywhere 3 that I use with my laptops. With this in mind, I was interested in finding out what might have improved with the just-released MX Anywhere 3S. The answer is that the only real change is the improved 8K DPI sensor which has about double the resolution of its predecessor. That said, this is one great mouse made a bit better.
The Anywhere 3S mouse is compact with excellent build quality. It’s dark grey rather than black like the previous version. As with the rest of the MX line, it’s wireless and can either connect by Bluetooth or by using a Logitech Unifying Receiver. Battery life is super with up to 70 days on a charge, and it charges using a standard USB-C connection. As with many products, there is no charging block included, but there is a short USB-A to C cable. Interestingly, there was no Unifying Receiver included, but I find that with laptops I prefer a Bluetooth connection.
What sets this mouse apart is that it can pair with 3 different computers and switch between them using the button on the bottom. This combined with the Logitech Options software provides a flexibility that’s unique. You can program the middle button, the scroll wheel, and the additional three buttons to do just about anything you wish. Even better is that the programable functions can be set differently for different programs. When a program is launched, the mouse automatically shifts to the settings specific to that program. But wait, there’s more! The Options software also has a function called Flow. When enabled, you can be connected to two or three devices, and the cursor flows from one to the next just like an extended desktop setup with multiple monitors. You can even drag and drop between devices. The one restriction is that they must all be connected to the same WIFI network.
As said, this is a great mouse with a bunch of extra features. I highly recommend it to anyone wanting a first-class pointer. It’s solid, with a very long-lasting battery, and can work on any surface … even glass.

If you want a lot of sound, nothing matches it
on May 4, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
As I’ve come to expect with Marshall speakers, the Middleton set itself apart in the crowded field of portable Bluetooth speakers. It is on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for. It’s large and surprisingly heavy (4 pounds) for a portable speaker. However, it can punch out a level of sound, quality, presence, and bass that’s astounding for a speaker its size.
The build quality and appearance are excellent, as you would expect from Marshall and its distinctive styling. As with all Marshall speakers, there’s an auxiliary in connection. The charging is by a USB C, and an A to C cord is included but not a charger. The specs say the battery lasts “up to” 20 hours. You might get that playing it quietly, but if you push it the way it likes to be played, the battery time is half or so of that. The Marshall app is rather ho-hum. If you’re not going to use the ability to form a “stack” of multiple Marshalls playing in unison, I find no need for it. Bluetooth pairing is quick and easy, and once that’s done, it just delivers great sound.
One of the unique things about the Middleton is that it delivers sound from the front, the sides, and the rear. This allows it to provide a remarkable sense of stereo separation and presence. However, I found that along with this ability comes a high sensitivity to where and how it’s placed. The bass and stereo effect increased dramatically when it was close to, but not pushed back into a corner. The Middleton can deliver a crazy amount of volume that will fill a large room or work well outside while staying balanced and crisp. In fact, it wants to be played loud. That’s when it comes to life and sets itself apart from the competition.
It's a lot of money, but it delivers an amazing sound. At a medium to high volume level, it sounds better than many multi-speaker home stereo systems. At modest levels, it’s still very, very good, but other speakers are competitive. If you want to fill a space with great sound, it will amaze your friends when they realize it’s coming from that little box.

Great value and solid sound
on April 28, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
There’s a lot of competition in the sub $100 headphone market, and the Sony's WH-CH520 can hold its own. At a price of around $50, they are a real bargain. At this price, there is no noise canceling, and they use some electronic tweaks to improve the sound, but they are a sound value. They also work quite well for phone calls, and they do have multi-point connection ability. Quality-wise, these seem well-made, and they are very light and comfortable for on-the-ear phones. I haven’t had them long enough to really test the battery life, but that does appear to be quite good.
These aren’t for audiophile listening but are great wireless headphones to use with a phone or tablet. There’s a Sony app to help with setup, and it’s how you access the equalizer and Sony’s “360 Reality Audio” feature (more about that later). When I first tried pairing them, they found and paired with my computer rather than my phone. After some unsuccessful mucking about, I deleted and reinstalled the app and reset the phones. After that, all went smoothly.
The “360” effect is a little unusual. It must be set up in the Sony app and requires you to take photos of your ears for Sony to analyze. At that point, you find that it works with just a handful of streaming apps. Tidal was supported, but many of the most popular services are not. It does prevent the harsh left/right separation often noticeable with headphones or buds, but it’s also a bit over-processed for my taste. I found the “Clear Bass” feature is more useful. It has an effect more like a loudness setting, and doesn't tend to muddle the other frequencies.
For good, everyday use and travel (if you don’t need noise canceling), these are a great choice. At the price, they are a solid choice and easy to recommend.

Affordable and average
on March 20, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
This case is an example getting what you pay for. The Insignia Trend Hard Shell Case is modestly priced, it fits the phone nicely, there are lots of colorful options, and it has a good grip and feel in the hand. That’s the basic requirement for any case, and it passes in all those areas.
The case offers good basic protection and is equivalent to other cases in the $10-15 price range. However, there are a couple of areas which could improve. There is no extra cushioning at the corners which is common in many cases, so I’m not sure what level of drop protection they provide. Another issue is the Magsafe performance. Yes, it worked and centered on my Magsafe charger, but the grip or attachment strength seems less than average. I wouldn’t suggest this case for use with any accessory that demands a strong magnetic bond.
If you’re looking for high performance and protection, you have to pay the big price, and you typically end up with a bulky, but bulletproof case. For everyday use, a good fit, a nice appearance, and a good feel in the hand, this case checks off those boxes.

Well made, works well, a bit pricey
on February 10, 2023
Posted by: Capshroud
There’s not much to say about this small trimmer other than it does what it’s designed to do and does it well. My wife did giggle at the name “Weedwhacker”, but the Manscaped folks are into the lawn care euphemisms for naming their products. Regardless of the name, the design and production guys did their jobs well. The Weedwhacker is well-designed, and the build quality is high-end. That said, it is at the high end of the price scale.
This is the new 2.0 version which is a bit smaller than the first, and they switched to a NiMH rechargeable battery from the previous Li-ion. Charging is done with a USB C port, and a cable and changing block are included. It charges slowly, but with the low power demand of the trimmer, charging should be infrequent. The trimmer is small, sleek, and IPX7-rated for water resistance. The cutting head is removable for cleaning. The instructions recommend replacing the head every three months. We shall see, but that seems a bit excessively frequent.
In use, it was great with no pulling or problems, and that's what you really want. All told, it’s a nice product that I would not hesitate to recommend to others.

Easy to install and easy to recommend
on December 5, 2022
Posted by: Capshroud
This is the go-to, commodity-level, basic garbage disposer bar none. InSinkerator is one of the oldest and best-established names in the business, and there are probably more of the Badger 5 units out there than any other. These guys are available from 1/3 HP at the way the 1 HP, but I think this ½ HP unit is the sweet spot. It’s enough to do the job but not overkill in price or electrical demand.
Installation is plumbing 101 and nothing tricky. If you’re replacing a plug-in unit, there’s no electrical work at all. Just … plug it in. If you need to hard wire it, then it’s up to you if you feel comfortable doing the work. This is wiring 101 and very basic. Just be sure to turn the breaker off first. If you are replacing an existing InSinkerator, you can leave the existing sink mount in place and use the new rubber seal and splash guard. That will make the new installation very quick and simple. It’s a twist lock mount and very straightforward. There are plenty of videos out there if you need coaching.
If you check around, you will see that the Badger 5 gets overwhelmingly good reviews. However, with as many of these guys that are installed there will always be a few lemons, so plug it in and test it before you install it. When using it, do not batch-feed a bunch of garbage. It’s a continuous feed unit, and you need to run plenty of water … cold water. Also, do not expect it to eat heavy bones. Use it as intended, and it should last a good while. If you do have trouble, there’s a two-year warranty.
This is a good unit at a good price but always check for sales. East to install and easy to recommend.

Not for everyone so do your research
on October 31, 2022

This is a unique and very much a niche product. Unlike most fitness devices, it does not count steps. It does not have GPS built-in. It must be used in connection with the mobile app, and you must subscribe and maintain an active account for it to be of any use. If fact, the device is free, but the subscription is $30 per month, or $25 per month if paid annually.
The unit itself has no screen. All information is accessed via the app, and a wealth of information is provided. It has a stretchable band and is to be worn snugly and at least an inch above your wrist. That took a little getting used to, and I had poor readings until I tightened it up. It’s waterproof and has a slide-on wireless charger puck. You charge it when off the device. The idea is that you never have to take the Whoop off. I found the charger a bit fiddly and good for one charge. The Whoop’s battery life struggled to be three days for me.
There are sensors that measure heart rate, respiration rate, skin temperature, and blood oxygen levels. From that information, it comes up with strain, recovery, and sleep numbers to guide you. The app also asks you to fill out a daily journal of eating, sleeping, emotional, and general well-being questions. Given all the data processing and synthesizing, the Whoop takes the first week to calibrate to your body, and it takes a full month before all the training and analytics are active. I found the recommendations sometimes puzzling, and the sleep analysis often questionable.
With that all said, it’s not aimed at the casual, everyday user. It’s designed to help those who are seriously training and pushing themselves to increase stamina and performance. It’s aimed at high-level workouts and training much more than everyday use. Any good smartwatch will give you more of that everyday information. The bottom line is that if you are in that serious athlete category, the Whoop may be just the thing you want to push yourself and improve. If you’re an everyday user who wants some general health data, there are other less expensive options. In other words, it’s recommended only for those it fits.

Quick and easy to use
on October 4, 2022
Posted by: Capshroud
I’ve owned several Shark vacuums, and they’ve all been excellent. With this in mind, I was anxious to try the HydroVac. I have a robotic mopper, but it’s never been satisfactory at really getting the vinyl plank flooring in my kitchen clean. The Shark unit proved to be a different story, and I’ll be getting rid of the robot.
The build quality is what you would expect from Sharp. It’s first class. It came well packaged and was a breeze to have up and running. Assembly consisted of inserting the handle into the body and placing the unit on the charging base. There’s a small solution tank at the top which you fill mostly with water and then top with the included cleaning/sanitizing solution. Then you’re ready to clean. Being cordless, it was also a breeze to use.
With the texture of my floor, it did take two cleanings to get some of the stubborn spots since the HydroVac is quite sparing with the solution. That also means it dries very quickly and leaves a pleasing fresh smell. The unit was a champ with hard surface floors which is its main intended use. There’s also a mode for cleaning area rugs, and that uses the solution more quickly. As stated in its literature, this is intended for light or surface cleaning of rugs. It’s not a substitute for shampoo or a deep extraction system, but it will clean surface dirt and not leave your rug saturated. It works best if the rug doesn’t have much texture to it.
When you replace the unit on the charging station, a light comes on to tell you it’s ready to self-clean. Make sure you have at least a half tank of the solution because it will use nearly that. The benefit is obvious since you have no residual dirt and odors left in the cleaning head and bush. Cleaning the dirty water tank is easy, and you’ll be amazed at the amount of dirt and the color of the water. There’s a separator for “dry” waste but realize it’s all going to be wet. Yes, this unit will pick up loose stuff on the floor, but I’d still recommend a quick vacuum if you have much dry dirt to deal with.
I really like this product and wholeheartedly recommend it. It will leave your sealed, hard floors spotless, and it will clean surface dirt from areas rugs. It’s quick, light easy to maneuver, and easy to clean.

There's a lot good about this tablet. It has a lot for the price such as a beautiful high-rez screen, a fast processor, really good battery life, and it comes with Android 6 Marshmallow (more about that).
A minor irritation is that the hardware navigation buttons are not illuminated. In a low light situation, you have to just know where they are.
The biggest weakness is that it only comes with 16 GB of internal memory. It does support SD cards up to 200 GB. However, I found that Samsung has chosen to NOT support adopted memory in their version of Marshmallow. This is true for all Sammy devices. This means you don't have the option of expanding that paltry 16 GB ... half of which is used by the system and Samsung's baked in apps and overlay.
The bottom line is that this is a fine home or kid's tablet, but you shouldn't confuse it with a real working tablet. Perhaps they just didn't want to steal too much thunder from their $400-500 offerings.
I'd almost give this 4 stars and would recommend it with the limitations mentioned.

Yes, you can move some apps to the SD card. That ability has been around for a while, but it's not the same thing as Android 6 adopted memory. It's slower, some apps can be moved but they won't work exactly right ... especially after a reboot. Many still keep a lot of data and cache in internal memory. It's a work around.

Adopted memory
August 11, 2016
Navigator is correct that slow memory can slow the system when using external memory as an extension of internal memory. That's why Android 6 (not Samsung's version) gives you the choice of using the SD card as adopted or portable memory, AND it checks the card's speed and warns if it's too slow to work well. This slow down also happens when moving apps to the card as described by other users.
As I said in my review, this is still a very good tablet. It's probably the best out there for the money. It just didn't meet my needs.

Until now, streaming devices forced you to use each of your apps individually – creating browsing headaches and disconnected watch lists. TiVo Stream 4K is the first to help you find what you want to watch–across your favorite apps–without needing to switch between platforms and navigate different screens. Recommendations from your apps are combined, giving you all your options in one place. And with direct integration with Sling , your live entertainment has a home alongside your streaming shows and movies. From beginning to end, from binge to browse, TiVo Stream 4K delivers an amazing Android TV streaming media player experience. A voice control remote with the power of Google Assistant lets you find movies, check scores, dim the lights and so much more, all with your voice. With Chromecast built-in, you can easily cast movies, music, and more to your TV from your mobile devices. Google Play integration gives you access to a world of movies, shows, games, and over 5,000 apps. Plus, with 4K UHD, Dolby Vision HDR, and Dolby Atmos compatibility, you can enjoy cinematic-quality viewing from the comfort of your couch. The company that invented the DVR just simplified streaming. Less scrolling, more watching. Availability of streaming content from third-party sources is subject to change and certain third-party fees may apply. Streaming apps may not be available in all regions. Broadband internet connection is required to access and receive streaming and live TV content.

Make the most of every day with the sleek style, performance, and all-day battery life² you need in the lightest Surface Laptop, all at an exceptional value. Ultra-light and portable profile, the apps* you use every day, premium materials, and a choice of must-have colors will make this your go-to laptop. ²Up to 13 hours of battery life based on typical Surface device usage. Testing conducted by Microsoft in September 2020 using preproduction software and preproduction configurations of Surface Laptop Go Testing consisted of full battery discharge with a mixture of active use and modern standby. The active use portion consists of (1) a web browsing test accessing 8 popular websites over multiple open tabs, (2) a productivity test utilizing Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook, and (3) a portion of time with the device in use with idle applications. All settings were default except screen brightness was set to 150nits with Auto-Brightness disabled. Wi-Fi was connected to a network. Is this a fast laptop in other words does it lag and how quickly does it turn on? Can you give me some examples as to the speed of the processing of different apps or going into a browser for example? My broadband goes up to 300 megs so it's a fast Wi-Fi.

It's very fast and near the top of its class for the hardware used. I tested it with Novabench and got an overall of 1750. The only weak link is the onboard video which just isn't strong enough for high-end gaming on video processing. It has WIFI 6 and Bluetooth 5, so it will make use of your fast broadband.

where is the micro phone? can it be used for a call center?

The mic retracts into the right side. As far as using them at a call center, I think they're a bit lightweight for all-day commercial use.
