I had a pair of old Sennheiser HD 202's that cost 40-50$ at the time, and I owned for years. I loved those headphones, but these are everything they were and more. The build of these 558's is way more solid. They sounds better in every range with a huge sound space, but keep in mind the 558's are open back unlike the 202's so bass especially sounds different (better though). They feel just about as light, however being open back they stay cooler, and the velour padding is more impressive/comfortable than I imagined. HD 202's had a long cable, and the 558's have a thicker cable at the same length with a twist lock mechanism (so I don't feel as bad when I step on it). All around better headphones than the 202's.by

The HD202 are a great pair of budget headphones. But they are not even close to what you get with these. The midrange on these is phenomenal. The soundstage is huge and the sound is very natural. Also these are open back headphones so they would sound a lot different compared to your closed back headphones.6 years, 8 months ago

I have like you used Hd 202 for a couple of years and they were fantastic. You can consider the 558s as a more comfortable 202s with a flatter and more balanced soundstage. Lesser bass, better audio range woth extremely satisfying mids. I do not regret my purchase even a bit.6 years, 9 months ago

These are excellent for TV viewing and video games. However, they do not have a microphone so your son wouldn't be able to talk to anyone in a game chat with these. Similarly, they terminate in a 3.5mm jack so your son's TV or Playstation controller would need a headphone jack in order to use these.6 years, 11 months ago

They are good for both. The sound is colored, but it's not colored enough to matter. If you're super duper professional, you'll want something like the Shure 840s or the sennheiser HD600s. These will work in a pinch. They are also fairly excellent for gaming. The soundstage is fantastic and the spacial awareness they provide is very above average. For gaming, they're okay. You'll hear massive explosions like they're right next to you. For editing, it's a no go. These color the sound far too much to faithfully mix, master, edit, or record with them. You may need to look elsewhere for studio monitors, BB doesn't really sell headphones like that. It's great for music or gaming and has excellent sound quality. However, there is no microphone attached and it is an open back headphone, which means that it needs to be used in a quiet area for the best sound.by

There is no microphone and it would be difficult using these for a traditional landline, depending on the handset.They do work well for smartphones, and I use mine all the time for conference calls, but be aware that you will be using the microphone built into your phone.

The impedance rating is really low on these headphones so I don't think you should be able to run into any problems with using a long cord. If you're still running into problems I have might recommend using a headphone amp. If you want to use any other cable other than the one that's provided you may need to open these headphones up with a screwdriver and mod them. YouTube is helpful.6 years, 8 months ago

It is very likely that the TV is preprogrammed so that the sound stops coming from the speakers when a device is plugged into the dedicated earphone jack. This is programmable on many later TV models so that you can change the settings yourself. As for sound quality, TV broadcasts and video content are usually not at the same higher level of audio quality as most music recordings, so you may not notice any difference whatsoever, even with a greater cable length. There are of course many exceptions, and you may find a slight loss in volume. I would suggest using the highest quality cable extension you can find - but at a reasonable cost. You generally get diminishing returns for every additional dollar you spend on cables over standard cable costs.by
