The $249 Chromebook does not have an RJ45 Ethernet port but should be compatible with most USB to Ethernet adapters that can be found online for as cheap as $5. The higher end 550 Chromebook has a builtin gigabit Ethernet port.Jay

Google docs is built in and 100% compatible with MS Word, probably 60% with Excel, and 10% with Power Point. No equivalent to Access...that said, while you can get MS Office to load with some creative computing...it isn't easy as using the native tools.by

There are multiple word processing apps available on the marketplace. The one I have used that resembles word almost exactly is called Nexusinstallfree which allows you to create Word documents,powerpoint presentations, and Excel worksheets. The pro of this app is that it is free, as opposed to Microsoft office which can cost over 100 dollars. The downside of this app is that you MUST BE CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET TO USE IT. There may be a processor like word that works offline but I have yet to find one. There are word processors like notepad that work offline, but as you probably know these are very basic. By the way you can open Word documents and presentations on a chromebook(without the app).Sent from my chromebook.

I've been researching ethernet adapters for Chrome. I don't quite understand how they work. I know you plug it in to a USB port. But the port on the other end ; is that where you insert the ethernet cable from your DSL modem? If so, when you take to, say a cafe where they have an internet connection, how does that work? I'm missing something.by

you only need an Ethernet cable if your going to plug it into your DSL, Cable or your own router. When you travel your more then likely going to find wireless so you wont be needing your Ethernet cable.The chromebook has built in wireless if you perfer to connect to your home network that way.

An Ethernet Adapter is only needed if you do not have a wireless connection available. It plugs into the USB port on your Chromebook and the other end of the dongle has the ethernet cord plugged into it. I have never done this as I always have a wireless connection but it theoretically should work.Any cafe should have a wireless connection and you don't need to use a dongle there.

I don't think so. MagicJack tries to install software, chromebook won't allow that to happen. You CAN however make and receive free phone calls through your Chromebook with the google voice applicationby

You will never be charged for using that initial 100 GB. Google also will not delete your data. After two years, any documents in your Google Docs account are free to stay there. You will only have to pay for any additional docs you enter after that.by

You will not be charged after the two years unless you chose to extend it. After the 2 year mark(unless you decide to pay) you will no longer be able to upload new files but will still keep the files uploaded before the expiration date.by

Google Cloud Print allows some printers to work directly from chromebooks. My HP Photosmart 6510 works very well through Google Cloud Print.If your printer supports HP ePrint, you can email documents to the printer for printing, too. It just depends on the model of printer you have.

The short answer is No, Chromebooks are designed to run Google's Chrome OS.The longer answer is that Chromebooks have a "developer switch" which disables the secure boot features of the Chromebook and allows you to boot other operating systems. However, it's still not as easy as popping in a USB boot drive since Chromebooks have a custom firmware. There is already some work underway to bring other LInux OSes like Ubuntu to the Chromebook but if you're looking to run anything more than Chrome OS and a hack project on your computer today, I'd recommend going with a standard PC.
Having said that, Chrome OS is awesome and meets my needs.
