This is the most raw and versatile record The Pretty Reckless has done yet, and it's only their third one. When Taylor Momsen (yes, Cindy Lou Who) speaks her mind, it's like she's exorcising all her demons for the world to hear. Check out the Alice In Chains inspired album opener The Walls Are Closing In / Hangman if you don't believe me.

You probably wouldn't have guessed by listening to this CD or anything from Monte Pittman that he was a touring musician for Madonna for many years. Prong, maybe. Obviously, he's a metal and hard rock artist, but that shows how versatile he is. Working with legendary producer Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel, Evile, Blind Guardian), whose work in many music genres helps showcase the raw talent of Monte PIttman. Also, check out his latest release Inverted Grasp Of Balance featuring Richard Christy (Death, Iced Earth, Charred Walls Of The Damned), and Billy Sheehan (David Lee Roth, Mr. Big).

Who knew that Blackwater Park would become as popular as it did? I didn't, and I still don't. It's a great Opeth album, but what about Deliverance, or Ghost Reveries, or even Still Life? People seem to gravitate towards this album more for some reason, but it is what it is. Just do me a favor before you jump at calling this their best album, listen to the others as well. Get the Legacy Edition.

Exodus' The Atrocity Exhibition takes it's name from the J. G. Ballard novel, and like the book, is like a collection of stories compiled together. This was part 1, which was later followed in 2010 by Exhibit B: The Human Condition. Both albums centered on the themes of war, society, politics, and religion. Exhibit B featured the song Class Dismissed (A Hate Primer), which became quite controversial in 2014 when a man was arrested for simply posting the lyrics to the song on Facebook. I think that just proves along with the stories portrayed in some of the songs on both albums that we as a society are doomed. Something to think about especially now with the current Presidential election.

This is the sound of a band that never settles for anything. Kataklysm blazed trails with 2002's Shadows & Dust, and they haven't slowed down since. Some believe that Prevail showed a little of an Americanized sound for the band, but I think it represents what they do best: blistering and melodic death metal. Check it out.

Despite obviously retaining elements from Reroute To Remain and Soundtrack To Your Escape, Come Clarity was seen as a return to In Flames' melodic death metal sound. I myself look at it as similar to the previous two in regards that it's an eclectic mix of sounds that I think should please most fans of Colony and Clayman.

Like Reroute To Remain, Soundtrack To Your Escape showed a major change in musical direction, and while they made many new fans, many old fans felt alienated. I myself still considered this melodic death metal despite the lack of guitar harmonies that they're best known for and more modern and melodic elements in their sound.

Many fans criticized In Flames for this album, but it was only the beginning. While I can see why, I do consider this one of their best. Not because I favor this kind of change, it was actually my first In Flames CD I ever owned, and I see it as more of an eclectic mix for the band. Not to mention Trigger is one of their best songs.

Clayman continued the style that In Flames imposed on their previous album Colony, but with more clean vocals which some may have considered controversial. Not as much as what would follow on their next album.

I applaud Century Media for reissuing In Flames' back catalogue even though Good Fight did it three years earlier. It would seem that Century Media got it right, in my opinion, by offering more bonus tracks on each release, in physical form instead of a download like Good Fight did with some of their music, and each reissue is at a good price of $10. Here we have their fourth album Colony, a clear example of the band's original melodic death metal sound refined and retooled after a major line-up change.
