Extending its reach in the home networking arena Linksys introduces Max-Stream AX6000, a dual-band Wi-Fi 6 mesh router, model MR9600 currently retailing for $400 at Best Buy.
I have relied on Linksys routers for several years and confidently recommend the brand. Until evaluating this new Max-Stream, my current setup has included Linksys Velop tri-band mesh routers. With five “nodes” successfully deployed providing strong Wi-Fi throughout a two story home over 3,000 square feet and a two-node setup in an apartment under 1,000 square feet, I’m a happy Linksys tri-band mesh fan.
The system has proven reliable, with Wi-Fi speeds close to the maximum provided by the ISP, strong signal from inside corner to corner without any dead zones and usable Wi-Fi outside well beyond the walls. Linksys pushes firmware updates to keep their routers humming along happily and up to date. Isn’t that a foundation for success?
Linksys routers are matched to a management app for iOS and Android mobile devices. Management is also available by logging on to the user’s Linksys account from a computer browser. Sweeeeeet!
After creating a Linksys account, installation is as easy as following along through the smartphone app. Upon completion of the main, or “parent” router installation, the software prompts the user for additional hardware “children” that will operate transparently and seamlessly. Additional compatible Linksys routers are optional. A variety of settings may be selected and created through the Linksys account dashboard.
The administrator has the opportunity to choose a unique router SSID, the name shown for this wireless network, and a unique password, both of which I advise.
The administrator dashboard, whether through a smartphone app or computer browser, shows all connected devices. I like the ease with which up to three devices may be selected for prioritized connectivity. In this way, signal goes to these devices first to assure optimal network performance.
Unlike conventional routers, mesh routers mask individual 2.4Ghz and 5.0 GHz bands. There are no consumer choices needed. The router locks onto the best performing network based on signal strength present at the device.
Connecting to the router’s unique Wi-Fi network is easy, made easier by not having to choose anything but a single network name and password. The same is true if the admin sets up a guest network. This can also include a custom guest network name if the user decides to set up a guest network. Why do this? A guest network can give authorized “guests” basic Wi-Fi access while preventing access to other resources such as shared printers, folders and network-connected drives, often referred to as NAS, or Network Attached Storage.
Note from the product photo of the rear panel, MR6900 has two USB ports as well as four Ethernet ports for hard-wired connectivity to nearby Internet-enabled devices. The Ethernet ports can prove handy for connection to a nearby TV, DVR, Blu-ray player, security camera, game system, streaming device, such as Roku, and more.
More than four devices can be Ethernet-connected by adding a multi-port unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet switch. Think of an Ethernet switch as an extension cord. Find unmanaged gigabit Ethernet switches with the number of added ports required at Best Buy.
While these and other devices might have the capability to connect using Wi-Fi, don’t do it. The industry-accepted and recommended rule is to use Ethernet (hard wiring) where available and Wi-Fi ONLY where wired connectivity is not available. In other words, if it’s mobile, use Wi-Fi. For every other device where it is possible, use Ethernet. Pre-made Ethernet cables are also available at Best Buy. What a coincidence!
How will this new dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router perform by comparison? In order to give it a fair evaluation, I unplugged and deleted all the individual Velop tri-band router nodes from the app and installed this new MR6900 as a single router, as if nothing else had ever been installed.
MESH TECHNOLOGY
Mesh is the way to go! Think of a blanket. Think of a bullet. Bullets target a single point. Blankets cover a wide area. It’s not quite this simple, but it’s a good way to grasp the concept. Multiple products under the blanket get the signal better than multiple products in the bullet scenario. Adding “nodes” to a mesh network allows the mesh umbrella’s coverage area to be extended at full capacity and speed. Mesh is best.
DUAL-BAND
With both dual- and tri-band mesh routers available, here is what you need to know in order to make an informed decision. Generally speaking, tri-band mesh offers the most options and best possibility to get full speed with more connected devices. An individual dual-band mesh router, as you will read in this Linksy article (https://www.linksys.com/us/r/resource-center/basics/multiple-wifi-bands-difference/) offer a good middle-ground for most consumers. In my experience, this applies to those in a home under about 1200 square feet.
The good news is that additional nodes, or “children,” along with the main, or parent node, are easily added as part of the robust blanketed “mesh” with overlapping signals. Confused? Don’t overthink it. If Wi-Fi signal is needed where it is not, add a node. Each node provides connectivity as if hard wired to the parent.
The best example I can think of is this. Let us say the “parent” unit is in the living room nearby to the entry point for the cable company’s coaxial cable run enters the premises. The coax connects to a modem, whether the modem belongs to the ISP or to the user. I own my modem, currently an Arris SURFboard SB8200 (also available at Best Buy). It has all the latest technology assuring that it is future-proof for the foreseeable future. The modem provides Internet signal to the router. Here’s the signal flow in this and most setups with a separate modem and router - Coax to modem, then Ethernet from modem to router, and wired and Wi-Fi from the router.
In this example, wired Internet is needed at equipment in the living room AND in another room set up as an office, where there are a couple of computers, a printer, scanner and hardware for a couple of VoIP (Internet-based) phone lines. Adding a node in that room with an Ethernet switch provides all the ports required to hard-wire these devices, with ports to spare. Your needs may less extensive, so a single Linksys MR9600 might work well.
I know what you’re thinking – why Ethernet-connect the printer when it must be also be capable of Wi-Fi connectivity? Refer to the rule above– wired when possible, wireless only in the absence of Ethernet capability. I can send printing jobs to that printer from the screen on virtually any of my devices whether at home or from anywhere in the world.
Wi-Fi 6
Wi-Fi 6 is newer than WI-FI 5, right? Here’s the scoop.
The full benefit of Wi-Fi 6 technology requires devices with built-in Wi-Fi 6. Backwards compatible with older Wi-Fi standards, though there are few Wi-Fi 6-enabled products, Wi-Fi 6 allows more simultaneous connections than Wi-Fi 5. Wi-Fi 6 allows speed that is much faster than Wi-Fi 5. Finally, the newer the router, the farther into the future the manufacturer will push updates for performance and security.
Most of us have added more devices to our Internet network than even two years ago. Today’s consumers can enjoy internet-connected “SMART” light bulbs, door cameras and security systems, door locks, thermostats, smart watches, medical equipment, multiple mobile phones, tablets, computers, more than one TV, DVR, gaming systems, Blu-ray player, multiple smart speakers, smart kitchen appliances including a smart refrigerator, washer and dryer. And who wants audio and video dropouts during Zoom or similar get-togethers? Or dropouts while streaming different content across different devices? Add them all up. Surprise! You’ve got more Internet-connected “SMART” devices than you thought. What have I forgotten? All of these, with more surely to follow, will gobble up more bandwidth across more devices.
Who among us would have thought about reliance on greater bandwidth even six months ago, before the COVID-19-pandemic? How quickly we have adapted to being in our home more than ever imagined!
Wi-Fi 6 is one way to be technology future-forward.
USB PORTS
Linksys MR9600 includes two USB ports. These ports can accept hard drives or USB thumb drives that may be used for content sharing and backup across the network. I have installed a Solid State Drive (SSD) with music and videos accessible on any compatible device on the network. Two ports, no waiting! How would you use them?
SPEED
Testing Wi-Fi 6 through an iPhone 11 proves the point, connecting at nearly full speed from the ISP, without performance hits from simultaneous downloads on two computers and streaming a movie without breakup or buffering on a TV. Running the Speedtest app for iPhone just now, speed was measured at 223mbps down and 30mbps up. The Cox service package is “up to” 300mbps down and 30mbps up. All is well here.
COVERAGE
There is Internet throughout a small apartment installation, but not full strength and at full speed at the farthest distances from the router, which is to be expected. Outside there is still good coverage past 50 feet from the walls, but not at full speed. Still, it’s proof positive that the signal carries well with this individual Linksys MR9600.
CONCLUSION
The combination of future-forward Wi-Fi 6, proven mesh technology, Linksys reliability and strong signal makes this Linksys Max-Stream AX6000 Mesh Wi-Fi 6 Router Model MR9600 an easy Mr. Gadget-recommended choice.

Sony’s punchy new XB23 EXTRA BASS portable Bluetooth (BT) sound tube is a worthy competitor in the jungle of similar products, and at about $100 from Best Buy, it is priced right.
Compact and lightweight, default settings provide the EXTRA BASS function. It can operate with simplicity when connected to a BT music source. There is much more to this sound blaster than simple operation for those who wish to go deep.
GETTING STARTED –
Unboxing reveals simplicity of design. Other than the XB23 itself, the only other hardware in the box is the USB charging cable, with one end USB-C and the other end standard USB Type A. This arrangement is what my experience suggests is now standard on current Sony products. The charging port is USB-C. Plug the USB-A end into almost any charger, though best charging performance will come from charger output of 1.5 A and above. Charging time at this rate is about four hours.
At about 3” in diameter by about 9” long and weighing in at just under 1.3lbs, it travels well with a battery life up to 12 hours, down to about 10 hours in EXTRA BASS mode. Small, yet powerful. Its small footprint should let it fit into most cupholders. Or, use the included strap to hang the XB23 in a tent or on a tree branch. It’s party time!
Powering on with a press of the power button, then pressing the BATT button XB23 speaks up with its approximate state of charge.
THE SOUND –
Let’s face it, this is why you’d buy one of these or a similar product. Fortunately, the powerful output is as stated above – CRISP and CLEAR. No muddiness or distortion here. XB23 is stereo capable, too, through smartphone settings using the free Sony Music Center app. Twin drivers provide reasonable stereo imaging and L/R channel separation. In stereo mode, position the speaker on its side with the Sony logo on the left. That’s the L channel speaker location.
In the event users have other products in the same Sony line, currently SRS-XB43, SRS-XB33, use the Party Connect feature to BT connect and sync with up to 100 compatible speakers. I cannot even imagine what this might sound like.
Over the past couple of weeks, I have enjoyed using the XB23.
WASHABLE –
Let’s call it waterproof to the IP67 rating, meaning the unit is waterproof, dustproof, rustproof and shockproof, and can be accidentally dropped into a body of water up to a meter deep for half an hour without harm. So, let it rain. Let it splash. Let it get accidentally dropped in water. If needed, wash it off with a gentle stream, please. Be sure to keep the rubberized cover in place over the charging port to maintain waterproof integrity.
TAKE THE CALL –
As if good and strong stereo sound was not enough, another nice touch is the on-board microphone that enables users to seamlessly answer incoming calls from a connected smartphone with a press of the Play/Call button.
MORE –
As indicated above, users can go deep into features, functions and settings above and beyond the basics. How? Scroll down the listing on the Best Buy product page for additional details.
Sony is to be commended for providing consistency with available online product information. Covered by a standard Sony one-year warranty.
Yes, I recommend this Sony XB23. Available in five colors! Nicely done, Sony.

What do you look for in wireless earphones and earbuds? I want long life per charge, all-day comfort, great sound and a comfortable cost. SONY WF-XB700 True Wireless Headphones, $129, strike a good balance.
With good, not overpowering bass and overall good sound, these buds are designed for up to an amazing nine hours playback per charge, and come with a case that has an internal rechargeable battery for another nine-hour charge.
THE GOOD –
• Long battery life
• Bluetooth connectivity
• Good fidelity
• Secure ear fit with three sizes of silicone earbud tips
• All day comfort
• Easy to use controls
• Dual microphones
• Water resistant in everyday use
• Includes 8-inch charging cable
Making the obvious comparison with form and the cultural phenomenon of Apple AirPods, these seal out the outside and feel more secure in place. Sure, these, too, can become snagged on items brushing by the ears, but not as easily as the hanging tails on AirPods. I also like the longer talk time provided by these SONY WF-XB700 headphones. They may not have the coolness factor of the Apple product, but their performance cannot be overlooked.
Tap a button to answer a call. Tap to end the call. Controls are straightforward as would be expected. Volume up is a tap on the left bud’s button. Volume down is a press and hold on the left button. Assistant-compatible with iOS and Android.
POSSIBLE ISSUES -
Out for a brisk walk wearing the WFXB00 pair, I noticed just how well the outside was blocked by the good seal in my ears. These earbuds have an effective and comfortable twist-to-fit design that is the reason for a good seal and comfort, as well as their ability to stay put. Blocking outside sound is not a smart idea while out and about where it is important to be able to hear what is going on. Lacking noise cancellation and transparency mode, there is no way to hear what’s going on outside your head. This may affect their appeal to some. This does affect their appeal to me.
Bearing in mind a typical requirement to hear what is around you and that wearing both L & R buds is required for operation, under what circumstance should these be worn? In the gym or while exercising at home? During travel? At work? While at home where hearing ambient sound is not required? Where else?
They are almost too good, with too good a fit.
CHARGING -
I have worn them for several hours over the past three weeks. Charging is easy and has not been needed very much.
The charger/case has a USB-C connector. A short cable of about eight inches has this connector on one end and standard USB-A on the other, ideally, to connect to a nearby laptop. It is too short to conveniently be used when paired with a standard USB charging port elsewhere.
MY TAKE -
Simple to use, easy to like, with very good sound and long battery life. This is a winning combination, but not a good fit for my lifestyle. I will keep searching.
SONY WX-FB700 include a standard one-year SONY warranty. Get yours at BestBuy.

Yes, it is possible to enjoy only a glass or two of wine, preserving its quality and characteristics without uncorking the bottle using a cool gadget called Coravin Three.
If a wine consumer typically opens and finishes every bottle in one sitting, Coravin provides a new option, a new opportunity. Once the bottle is uncorked, it is best consumed relatively quickly. Here is where Coravin makes sense.
BY-THE-GLASS, MAINTAINING QUALITY -
Since users can enjoy wine by the glass at home without uncorking the bottle, savoring over time, even over years in some cases, users get the best of having it now and having it later, much later.
With this appealing thought in mind, I evaluated Coravin Model Three, the company’s current $199 entry product.
I have friends with extensive wine collections consisting of hundreds of bottles with many stored 40 years or more. Sure would be nice to check on one or more to see how they are doing, to enjoy from time to time over time! Coravin is a product that caters to these users as well as unsophisticated wannabe wine learners like me.
IT'S ALL IN THE WRIST -
In one fluid motion Coravin grips the bottle and pierces the cork with a needle. Tip the bottle over a glass, press the trigger to inject inert argon gas. The gas provides the oomph to nudge out the desired amount of wine. When done, tip the bottle up to stop pouring. In another smooth motion pull Coravin up and off the bottle. The needle is removed and, assuming the cork is in good shape, the hole seals itself. It really is all in the wrist.
Find and watch the Coravin Three on the company website Click the HOW IT WORKS TAB a bit down the page, and be sure to click Insert, Tip, Pour and Preserve to the left of the video demo window.
The older I get, the more I enjoy wine. I think it’s fun to try different wines at different parts of a meal. As many as three or four different wines would be nice, starting before dinner, then with appetizers, enjoying something different with the main course, and then wine with dessert. With Coravin, this becomes easy and guilt-free even at home. The Coravin experience promises the first glass of wine will taste the same as the last, even years later, in most cases.
ABOUT SCREW-TOP BOTTLES -
Now is a good time to address that last point, “in most cases.” As indicated earlier, Coravin devices come with a needle to pierce the wine cork. What about screw-top bottles? Not all of the better wines are cork-sealed. New Zealand, for example, allows only screw tops and some of their wines are highly regarded. Spain, on the other hand, still mandates their wines be sealed with cork.
Coravin Three includes one screw-top cap. This unique replacement cap is designed to replace the original and to be punctured, then self-seal up to 50 times while preserving the character of what’s in the bottle.
Coravin instructions indicate that screw-top wines using their adapter cap are not going to last as long as wines with actual corks, so it is suggested that these be consumed within about three months. This is better than simply screwing the original cap back on. Additional caps are available in a six-pack for $30.
The included protective sleeve may be used over any bottle. Why? In the extremely unlikely event that the bottle is unknowingly compromised, the entering pressurized gas might trigger a mini-meltdown, wherein the bottle goes poof. The sleeve is provided out of an overabundance of caution, the result of very few reports of this phenomena from a few years ago.
IN THE BOX -
One Coravin Three with needle attached. One screw cap. Two gas cartridges. One protective sleeve. The usual paperwork.
Assembly is simple Unscrew the capsule cup (handle) where the gas cartridge goes. Insert a gas cartridge base-end first. Screw on the handle and it’s ready.
AND THE RESULTS?
Does Coravin work? As best I can determine, the answer is yes! Here is what I know. During testing, it did as advertised, pouring wine from a corked bottle AND from a screw-top bottle. The cork re-sealed with little “bleeding” and the screw-top delivered wine and then seemed to re-seal.
The wine delivered per pour comes slowly, owing to the fact that it is extracted through a slim needle, not a wide open bottle. I found this of little concern in exchange for the benefit of leaving the wine in its bottle in the original state of unopenness.
I tried Coravin Three with an inexpensive corked Hungarian semi-sweet Merlot from TJ’s and with the budget-priced screw-topped German Dr. Heidemanns – Bergweiler Dornfelder semi-sweet as recommended at my local Total Wine & More.
After two weeks, sampling about 2-3 ounces maximum per day, alternating between each bottle every other day, I have not detected any difference from the first day to the last.
Ready to buy and give Coravin a try? It’s at Best Buy.
FOR STILL WINES ONLY -
Coravin is not for use with sparkling wines, so enjoy that prosecco, champagne or other wine with sparkle immediately after opening. Hopefully, it will be good to the last drop.
WHAT I DON'T KNOW -
Here is what I cannot say at this moment. I cannot tell you that a red wine I try today will pass the taste test in five, 10, or 15 years from now. I can only say with confidence that the mechanics of the Coravin system delivered as promised.
MORE CORAVIN FACTS -
Needle talk - Coravin Three comes with one needle, the “standard” needle. Replacements are available from Best Buy or from the manufacturer. A three-needle kit with three sizes for three distinct needs is also available. Each needle is made of stainless steel with a non-stick coating and is expected to last through “hundreds of uses.”
Care & Cleaning - Yes, it should be carefully rinsed after use.
Get Coravin argon gas capsules at Best Buy.
According to the manufacturer, “Each Capsule will allow you to pour up to fifteen 5-ounce (150ml) glasses of wine.”
According to the manufacturer, “On average, a 150ml (5-ounce) pour of wine with a standard needle will take 25 to 29 seconds.”
Cheers! Prosit! Skol! Chin-chin! Kanpai! L'chayim! Here’s mud in your eye!

For just $89 (today) at Best Buy, Ninja Professional Plus Blender with Auto-iQ (BN701) is a big-batch making smoothie, ice crushing and ice cream making wizard.
With a very generous 72-ounce pitcher (capable of blending a full 64 ounces) and three preset Auto-iQ Programs, one-button convenience is at hand to create ice cream, smoothies and frozen drinks limited only by the user’s imagination. That is this beast’s forte. Have a look at the Ninja Total Crushing Blades! Mean and nasty, high performance.
I am surprised by and impressed with the 1400 peak watts of power. This means in bursts there should be plenty of punch to perform its core power duties with satisfying results.
This new model has a more powerful motor than previous Ninja blenders and features a new motor base design with presets that cater to the current smoothie trends. Unlike the competition, that 72-ounce pitcher is sure to be a family and party pleaser, and that’s the idea, I am sure.
WHAT IT IS NOT
Here is what it is NOT, not that there is anything wrong with that. It is NOT an all-purpose blender of the type and commensurate expense of products from brands including Vitamix and Blendtec. Ninja Professional Plus Blender will, however, do a better job of its specialty jobs than will the more expensive products and here is why . . .
WHAT IT IS AND WHAT IT DOES WELL
The removable blade “tree” in this behemoth assures perfect blending without cavitation, the air pocket that most certainly will be created in those expensive products and in any others with the blades in the bottom of the pitcher. If you have one of those, you know this to be true.
Dump frozen ingredients into one of those and start blending. It is likely that you’ll have to stop, shake the contents to the bottom, use a spatula to push down and scrape the sides or use a supplied tool through the lid to break up the air bubble and move the contents about towards the blades at the bottom of the jor. Ninja Professional Plus Blender with Auto-iQ powers through the frozen contents for total and perfect blending from top to bottom without stopping to make adjustments to the jar contents.
This blender is NOT to be used with or to create a hot liquid product, as is OK with the more powerful and more expensive Vitamix blenders, as an example.
Note that the product carries a one-year manufacturer’s warranty.
Got it? COLD for this blender to make mounds of powdered ice, perfectly blended smoothies or frozen adult beverages, and to make ice cream that’s ready for the freezer. Also, blend the ingredients COLD that can then be heated to make a wonderfully thick and tasty soup after transfer to a pot on the stove or into the microwave oven. Spend $200 more, and up, to get a Vitamix or other premium product that will not only blend but also create enough friction that translates to heat right there in the blender jar. Ah, but is it worth the extra money? What features and capabilities do YOU want in a blender?
It’s not complicated. With the blade tree in place, load the pitcher. Secure the lid with a snap of the pull-down locking bar. Place the loaded blender jar on the motor base observing the pictorial directive to twist clockwise to lock the pitcher in place. It will snap and turn no more. Depending upon the surface the Ninja sits on, a pair of lightly suction-capable feet along with two plain old rubber bumper feet may help stabilize and prevent the assembly from “walking” while in use.
Then, plug it in, choose a MANUAL setting or PRESET according to the desired outcome and GO. In manual mode, start, pulse and stop as desired. In program mode, Ninja Professional Plus will perform automatically and stop when the program has completed.
CLEANUP
Cleanup is easy, too. One way is to remove the blade assembly from the pitcher, treating it very carefully. It’s SHARP! I think washing the blade “tree” by hand using a dish washing brush is most effective, but it is said to be safe for the top rack in an automatic dishwasher. The blender jar is also said to be washable on the dishwasher top rack, but I think it is impractical to put that BIG thing on its side up there. With the blade tree removed, wash it by hand and dry it with a dish towel. I'd stay clear of the blades and let them air dry. Much easier and safer.
Though not instructed to do so, I washed this Ninja blender jar with blades installed by following the same procedure as with my Vitamix. With the blade tree installed, I fill THIS blender jar with six ounces of lukewarm, NOT hot water, add no more than three drops of Dawn liquid dish soap and then secure the lid. Then, I pressed (Manual) LOW, then MED, and then after about 10 seconds, I pressed HIGH and let it run an additional 30 seconds. DO NOT walk away. Keep an eye on it to be sure the suds from the tiny bit of dish soap do not create so much foam as to overflow the pitcher. If using just the two or three drops of soap, there will not be too many bubbles.
After the cleaning cycle as described, I removed the jar from the base, headed to the kitchen sink where I removed the lid and the blade assembly. There, the lid, blade assembly and pitcher were rinsed in fresh cold water. Avoiding stains and deposits from the hard water where I live, I dried the jar and lid with a kitchen towel, but I left the blade assembly to air dry so I could steer clear off the razor-sharp edges.
Here is a benefit offered by THIS product over any other blender with non-removable blades at the bottom of the blender jar. On ALL those others, it can become a bit tricky to fully clean the bottom inside of the jar, especially where the blade base meets with the gear-like piece on the underside that mates with the motor. It is this meshing of the gears that allows the motor to turn the blades inside the blender jar.
In this Ninja design, however, removing the blades reveals not only the entire blade assembly but also the entire and unobstructed inside bottom of the blender jar. Nothing can hide from thorough cleaning. In fairness, however, I never had a problem cleaning the inside bottom of my Vitamix blender jar using the prescribed method above. Just a little food for thought!
READY FOR ACTION
Test number one – ice crushing/shaving. I loaded a full tray of ice cubes into the blender jar and pressed the ICE CRUSH button. Et voilà, loads of beautifully crushed ice for blended drinks or snow cones.
Test number two – smoothie time. The Internet is loaded with smoothie and other frozen drink recipes so take the time to look around to find and make note of favorites, unless you are already a pro with your own favorites. Use the QUICK START GUIDE linked above and that comes packed with the product for your own quick start guide.
If the smoothie is too thick, add COLD liquid of choice. If too THIN, add more frozen fruit or some ice. Once you have determined how to get the desired consistency, you are on your way to creative smoothie nirvana.
Don’t forget that a smoothie is a kissing cousin to a milkshake. I have no doubt that this Ninja would make fine milk shakes.
Just as milk shakes are easy to create in this gadget, so, too, is salsa, using the MANUAL button then PULSE for the desired consistency. The included CHIPOTLE SALSA recipe is delicious as well as easy to make. I add ½ teaspoon of ground cumin to their recipe.
Moving along the continuum of smoothie variants, try your hand at making dips and sauces as well as blending the ingredients for thick and hearty soup. Another capability I intend to exploit.
Test number three – ice cream. Oh, boy, this is fun! I have made delicious coffee-based orange coffee mocha ice cream as well as simple and flavorful lime sorbet. This could be habit forming.
I have two favorite features – one is the 72-ounce blender jar, not unique to this model. I assume that the Ninja will blend as desired. The other favorite feature is the removable blade assembly which allows thorough cleaning of the jar, blades and lid.
GENERAL FEEL
The motor has not exhibited any signs of stress through any of its paces over the past days of intensive testing.
The parts and pieces assemble easily and operate smoothly. It is difficult to err when using this Ninja. Properly snap the jar onto the base as it is difficult to do otherwise. Place the blade assembly onto its mount in the bottom of the jar. This, too, is difficult to do incorrectly as is removal of the blades. Lift it out and that’s that. The lid fits well and the lid locking bar works flawlessly to seal the lid to the jar, as well as releasing the lid when the lid locking handle is raised. The pouring spout snaps shut against its seal to prevent leakage, and is a part of the lid assembly that works without fuss.
CONCLUSION
Now, with the ability to make a perfectly blended hefty portion to satisfy several thirsty friends and family members AND to make more than a quart of ice cream, this under-$100 kitchen gadget could see lots of action. Add to that the other capabilities, and it is easy to see that, given the desire to do so, Ninja Professional Plus Blender with Auto-IQ will see regular use for years to come. I like it better than I had expected!
As with ANY countertop appliance, the only other consideration before purchase is figuring out where it will live when not in use. There must be a space for it that does not interfere with day-to-day use of the kitchen counter space. Fortunately, I was able to create and dedicate a space outside the kitchen and adjacent to the dining area where my countertop appliances can live both when in use and when stored and ready.
I would recommend this to a friend!

DIY taxes are easy with H&R Block - Premium Tax Software for Mac and Windows includes the capability for federal and state tax prep and filing. Purchase and download as I did from Best Buy.
According to H&R Block, “This H&R Block Premium Tax software is designed for people who want to be in control of their tax preparation experience and feel empowered by completing their own return. It is a perfect solution for homeowners, investors, rental property owners, or self-employed who have complex tax situations and want to get a big refund.” If yours is even simpler, Premium will be overkill, so look for their less expensive basic offerings that best meet your needs.
Once purchased, receive a download link with a unique identification code. Launch the software and start answering questions.
Among the earliest prompts will be to download the latest rules and forms for your state.
You’ll need last year’s returns in digital format. If you used competing software from Intuit, you will be prompted to find your return in your documents folder (the usual place), or if you did return directly through the IRS, you can download the necessary digital files from the IRS by signing on to your account.
Then, continue answering questions, providing 1099s and W2s. Before you know it, you will be finished and ready to file electronically to get the most to which you are entitled.
This was easier than I had imagined. I'm glad I used this software.

I did not think I’d like it, but I do! This model I5490-7234SLV-PUS Dell Inspiron 23.8" Touch-Screen All-In-One with 10th generation Intel Core i7, 16GB Memory and 512GB SSD is reviewed on behalf of Best Buy. The price is $1200 as of 12-25-19. Look for a price drop soon.
I’m an Apple-preferred computer user since way back in 1980, though I have had numerous Windows-based PCs all along. I thought it appropriate to check out this new model rig through the lens of an irregular Windows user, and I am glad I did.
What’s Hot
• All-in one design – it’s all inside the monitor; clean and neat
• Top-of-the-line 10th Generation Intel quad-core mobile i7 processor, their latest generation low-power and zippy processor for good energy efficiency
• Maxed out with 16 GB RAM
• Air cooled, so no fan to make noise
• 23.8" Full HD touch screen with anti-glare matte finish
• Intel UHD Graphics 620; integrated graphics card for casual gaming, capable of HD, not 4K video, shares the computer’s memory (RAM), but, good enough
• Dell Mobile Connect pairs your iOS or Android smartphone with your desktop, though mirroring is available only with Android phones
• 512 GB SSD (Solid State Drive) for speed and reliability; no moving parts
• 802.11ac wireless technology for the fastest wireless connectivity
• Windows 10 Home Edition (standard)
• Wireless keyboard and mouse; keyboard has good feel, mouse, too
• Pop-up peek-a-boo webcam; used for face recognition log-in, easily hides by pushing it down to stowed position for added security
• Easy out-of-box setup; easier and faster than any Mac in my experience
• Comes with Duracell Copper Top Alkaline batteries for keyboard and mouse
• Fast startup, fast response
• Bluetooth 5.0 (the latest version of BT available)
• Dell CinemaSound – full, rich sound from video streaming, gaming, etc.
• Ports and slots galore on the back
Rear security lock slot
HDMI-out
HDMI-in
USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C™
RJ45 Ethernet 10/100/1000
USB 2.0 Type A
2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type A
Universal headphone jack
SD Card Reader 3.0
What’s Not
• *NOTHING, so far*
It is this kind of experience that I like most. Going in, I was skeptical and dubious. How could a lowly Windows computer possibly compare favorably with my Macs? I love to say when preconceived opinions are WRONG.
Out of the box, setup was a joy, actually fun. Clicking through the prompts, I was up and running in what seemed like no time. See the Setup and Specifications manual at https://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/inspiron-24-5490-aio_setup-guide_en-us.pdf.
This Dell Inspiron seems just right for MOST consumers. I like the Intel processor upgrade from earlier, slower ones. Why go for the newest and speediest available 9in this model), and not a new i5 or less? Even with everyday email and social media, streaming videos and seemingly simple tasks, having this 10th generation Intel i7 makes it a pleasure to multitask, with several things happening in the background, without choking. Trust me, the faster processor will translate into more user enjoyment of this computer for more years than one with a slower processor.
That is not to say that this i7 processor is a speed demon. It is not. There are faster i7 series processors, but not at this price and not in this configuration. It is more than just good enough, unless the user is going to compose and arrange music or edit and create high quality videos.
The pop-up camera saw me, learned to recognize me during setup and that was that. Waking from sleep or on a fresh reboot, I pop up the camera which recognizes me in an instant and I’m signed in. No need for a passcode, though there is one as a backup. Once I was recognized, I parked the camera back in its well. That way, no bad actors can get in and view what I have not authorized. There is no need to put a piece of tape over the lens on this camera as some users feel they must do.
I am not a gamer, so I cannot tell you how well this Dell does in that department, but streaming videos is a satisfying experience. I watched a bit of The Irishman on Netflix and an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime. The 24-inch screen placed where it ought to be in front of me on my desk provides a good experience. The matte-finish screen not only helps avoid fingerprints, it is also the right thing to have for viewing without glare or reflection.
This Inspiron comes with a 12-month subscription to McAfee LiveSafe antivirus software, which is likely to be a bit better than the free Windows Defender anti-malware software included in Windows. After 12 months, users can decide what to do. I do not detect a slowdown from having this software activated.
Also included is a 30-day trial of Microsoft Office. If you already own Microsoft Office, you may wish to delete the trial from a computer and sign in to your Microsoft account to download your own Microsoft Office 365. If you are not a Microsoft Office user, look into whether you want or need Microsoft Office. There are FREE versions of compatible software doing similar functions as Microsoft Office applications. My picks are either Libre Office or G Suite from Google. Few consumers need the relatively expensive Microsoft Office product. These alternatives are compatible with anything you might need to do and with documents received that are from Microsoft Office products. If you are NOT going to use the pre-installed Microsoft Office trial, uninstall it with a right-click on it in the Windows menu OR from the Windows Control Panel.
Uninstall anything else you know you will not use in order to save space on the 512 GB SSD. You may need the space down the road.
My Dell Inspiron has all the ports and slots one could need, including and SD card slot for SD cards from cameras and other devices. If needed, buy an inexpensive adapter if you need to insert other, smaller cards.
Streaming Netflix and other content looks great and sounds great, owing to Dell CinemaSound. Plenty of punch!
Some purists think it best to get a computer that is not inside a monitor, not an all-in-one. I was among them. However, with the advent of reliable Solid State Drives instead of spinning hard drives, and with the more reliable computing hardware used in modern all-in-on computers, I see little reason to stick to separates today for most consumers. Why take up all that extra space?
What about the touch screen? I was among the first to get an all-in-one touch screen Acer desktop computer nearly 10 years ago. Hated it! BIG, cumbersome, with touch-screen software that did not work and was not ready for prime time. How things have changed! In recent years, touch is well-integrated on these computers. However, touch is of limited value on a vertically-oriented screen. Think about it. Are you going to pick up your hand from near the mouse every time you want to navigate to click an on-screen object? Probably not, but it’s nice to have for those times you want to touch and go. I’m still a bit conflicted on this. How about you?
Touch is perfect for tablets and phones. Are you going to draw with your finger on a vertical screen?
Touch screen preferences aside, this is a sweet computer, so far.
Once basic settings are made and you get to the home screen on any new computer, be sure to go into the Control Panel (on Windows PCs) and do all the system updates available until there are no more to do. On this Dell, there were five cycles of updates before it reported that all was up to date.
In the brief week or so since firing it up, I am enjoying using this Dell Inspiron model I5490-7234SLV-PUS and recommend it to you without reservations IF IT MEETS YOUR NEEDS.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Another contender in the booming cordless stick-vac category, Bissell ICONpet model 2288, reviewed on behalf of Best Buy, is a solid performer capable of replacing many conventional vacuums, at a current cost of $300.
In my tests, Bissell ICONpet 2288 performed well, though not competitively, exceptionally so.
It is easy and straightforward to use. This Bissell ICONpet model 2288 did a fine job vacuuming hard floors and carpeting here and at a neighbor’s. I also used it to vacuum my car’s interior, including the cloth upholstery. Easy!
Attaching and removing accessories was accomplished without extraordinary effort.
Battery life per full charge varies according to which of three power/suction modes is selected. Use per charge is specified at “up to 30 minutes.” Without a motorized head attached, my tests yielded 58 minutes of use before automatic shutdown occurred after the battery became depleted. This should be enough time to vacuum bare floors in a modest home on the lowest power setting. Using powered attachments and at higher performance settings expect the battery to be depleted in significantly less time. Regardless, this should be enough run time for most users to vacuum some bare floors and a few small low-pile rugs on a single charge, and more than enough run time to vacuum a vehicle interior and trunk on a full charge. Please read additional battery comments later.
I do not recommend using this or any vacuum on deep pile rugs and carpets. This is a recipe for disaster! Why? The long threads can become wrapped around any brush head and ripped from their base. Please consult and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning recommendations for all rugs and carpets BEFORE USE!
The LED lighted heads are useful, though the lighting is always on when the lighted attachment is in use. I do not expect runtime to be significantly negatively impacted when using lighted accessories.
Charging was easy to accomplish.
WHAT'S IN THE BOX?
•Handheld vacuum
•Motorized “TurboBrush” tool
•Swiveling tangle-free brush roll with LED lighting
•Crevice tool with slide-in-place dusting brush and end-lit LED
•Extension wand with pass-through power connections
•Wall mount with charging system, includes bubble level for accurate and level wall mounting
•Includes one tool holder that attaches to the wall mount, though the instruction manual shows two tool holders
•Product manual (Download and read the user manual available online)
WHAT'S HOT?
•Converts from handheld to whole-house stick vacuum
•Strong suction
•Three selectable suction/power levels
•LED indicators show power level and remaining battery charge
•Multi-surface cleaning – area rugs, upholstery, carpet, bare floors, per beds, stairs, low-pile carpet, and car seats, trunks, floors
•Good battery runtime per charge
•Cleverly designed CleanSlide Technology™ wipes clean the barrel in the dirt tank (see description in linked manual)
•Wide LED-lit floor head features swivel, lay-flat design to clean under some furniture and beds
•Narrower tangle-free motorized floor, stair, upholstery and pet hair removal head
•Easy-mount wall hanger with pass-through power plug
•Not excessively loud as compared with similar products
•2-year warranty
WHAT'S NOT?
•Emptying dirt tank requires several steps and partial disassembly; messy when full of dirt
•Filters require regular maintenance, advisable after each use; the post motor filter is pleated paper and cannot be washed
•Reusable foam filter atop the dirt tank is washable with soap and water.
•Heavier than some competitive models; main unit weighs just under four pounds without attachments, about seven pounds with attachments
WHAT'S THE DEAL HERE?
In the absence of competitive makes and models, Bissell ICONpet 2288 is a fine specimen. However, my review must be tempered by experience with other brands. Clearly, 800-pound gorilla DYSON has set the standard and is the target, and the reason competitors try to do better. The goal to beat the gorilla remains, to date, the impossible dream.
DYSON remains a better choice with better performance and greater value over time, though many, but not all DYSON models have a higher initial cost. DYSON performance is better than this Bissell as well as every other known competitive product.
No other reviewer of whom I am aware has covered the differences, so let’s get to them.
•DYSON stick vacs and handheld models feature virtually permanent washable, easily removable filters, not replaceable pleated paper filters. Their filters SHOULD NOT require cleaning after each use, as is the case with competitors including this Bissell. In fact, DYSON filters need to be washed (easiest in a sink) only occasionally.
•All DYSON models have easy to remove, easily emptied dirt bins (also called a dirt cup or dirt tank). Dirt bins are also easily disassembled and reassembled for more thorough cleaning and wiping.
•The battery pack in this Bissell is not replaceable. The manual has instructions for removal and disposal of the battery, with instructions to also dispose of the rest of the product after proper disposal of the no longer rechargeable battery. By contrast, DYSON batteries are easily user-replaceable on all battery-powered models.
Why do other makers not offer these beneficial features and benefits in their products?
WHAT CAUSES LOSS OF SUCTION?
Loss of suction can occur when filters become embedded with dust and debris. Loss of suction can also occur if the dirt cup becomes overfilled and impacted with debris. I have never tested a vacuum to this limit, but I have tested competitors without cleaning the filters after each use. Eventually, sometimes slowly, suction is diminished. Of this there is no doubt. The only other cause of loss-of-suction could be a clog somewhere in the air path. Any vacuum can suck up something that can cause it to clog and lose suction.
By comparison, Bissell ICONpet does not exude a highest quality feel or appearance nor does it stand out among competitors from Shark, Hoover, Dirt Devil, Black & Decker or the numerous other brands with largely unfamiliar names.
There are features on this Bissell ICONpet and on some other brands not found on DYSON models.
One is the tangle-free brush. I have not found this to be an issue, as the brush roller on DYSON vacuums is also easily removed, any entangled hair or fibers easily cut and removed and then the brush can be easily put back in its place. You may feel differently.
The brush inside the motorized heads on this Bissel ICONpet model is similarly easily removed and replaced after cleaning using the same technique. The brush can become entangled with hair and stringy material, such as loose carpet fibers, if the strands are long enough. I use a US nickel or quarter, or a wide-tip flat screwdriver to open and close the end cover.
Also not yet found on DYSON models is a lighted head as has become popular on other brands, including this Bissell. It’s a nice touch when visiting dark corners or underneath furniture. The light makes some debris stand out.
In conclusion, there is nothing patently bad about this Bissell ICONpet 2288. However, when it comes to stick vacuum value and performance, Bissell is one among many, superior to none.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Easy setup with loads of area-filling and clean sound from this not so little portable Bluetooth speaker.
Who wants this? Anyone looking for a workhorse BT speaker for home, work or play.
Urbanears is well known to me from their very nice earbuds and other personal sound products I have tested in the past.
This Rålis addition to their lineup is a premium offering at its pricepoint, and they deserve praise for a job well done.
The sound? While NO BT speaker is "audiophile" equipment, this Urbanears Rålis is as good as I have heard from this kind of speaker. And it SHOULD sound great at that pricepoint, right?
Operation is quite simple. If you've ever used a modern device with standard symbols to play, pause, skip tracks, adjust volume and pressing a power button, you're pretty much an expert already. There are not many instructions because not much instruction is needed.
The manual makes it clear as to the function of each port, button and function.
• Charges in under two hours
• IPX2 rating means it is resistant to splashes, so do be careful
• "Multidirectional sound" provides pleasing expanded spatial effect for environment filling audio. It works! https://www.aearibbonmics.com/what-is-blumlein-technique/
• up to 20-hour use per charge (I never exhausted the battery, which lasted over 20 hours in my brief uses)
• Aux input can receive output from a wired device, even while charging
• Equipped with the latest Bluetooth (BT) 5.0 technology
• Can simultaneously connect to TWO BT devices to share sound outputs from both through this one speaker - add an AUX input for THREE shared sound sources
• Can charge mobile device through USB connector (a little bonus)
• Was received with both US two-prong cord and international plug with two round pins
• Nice, not overpowering bass response
Choose from FOUR colors. Rålis is built with a pleasing, grainy texture.
Expect a solid feel from its over six-pound heft. As can be seen from the images online, it's quite stylish!
No demerits in my review as I can find nothing not to like here.
Here, it's a hit and recommended to you.
This sample was provided in exchange for my HONEST, no-holds-barred review.

Ninja - Foodi 6-in-1 10-qt. XL 2-Basket Air Fryer with DualZone Technology - Gray
Meet the Ninja Foodi 6-in-1 10-qt air fryer. This XL 2-Basket Air Fryer has DualZone Technology and IQ Boost. With its 2 independent baskets you can cook 2 foods, 2 ways, at the same time, not back-to-back like a traditional single-basket air fryer.

Is it easy to clean

So glad you asked this question! In my view, cleanup is THE most important feature, after excellent results, that is.

ALL the mess, whatever it may be, is contained within the basket, or, the bucket, if you will. Remove the basket and hand wash or wash it in the dishwasher along with the rack, Both are non-stick.

NO other countertop oven is as easy to clean as a dedicated air fryer. This dual-basket model with twin 5-qt baskets along with the built-in intelligence that allows two foods of different types to be finished at the same time is a game changer.

I LOVE it, and I am sure you will, too.
