i have a finepix s1000 how do i get it off ! protected car?d
Along the side of the card is tiny slider switch that can easily get flipped to the ON position that write protects the card. Moving it to the OFF position should take of the problem. If this doesn't work please re-post question so I can look into other possibilities.

The Sony HDR-XR500V is a 120gb HD camcorder with LCD screen and a viewfinder.

new camcorder to play back anologue 8mm
My old sony ccd fx630 won't play back. Is there a repair or better to find new camcorder that will play old tapes. If so which new cams will work?
8mm, High8 and Digital 8 are no longer made. As for repairing the old unit it might be more expensive to get it working again than is worth putting into it.
You might want to look for a used unit and get those old tapes copied to a DvD. There is still a few places on line that have some. Most Digital 8 will also play back 8mm tapes.
There also might be a Duplication House in your area the could convert the tapes to another format for you.

do I need a specific memory card for my vivitar camcorder?
can I use any memory card in my Vivitar camcorder? or is it brand specific?
Generally it is not Brand specific. If it needs SDHC only for example, it must be SDHC memory but can be any brand. If it is SD or SDHC both can be used. IF it is xD you cannot use SD or SDHC.

For a D-SLR lens, what are groups and elements and how do they relate to each other and what do they do?
Elements in lenses are a very complex construction to correct for optical aberrations. The wider the angle of the lens the more complex the construction and in most cases the number of elements...or lenses inside the lens housing.
In the case of a Zoom lens that goes from 55mm to 200mm for example, the tube of the body will extend and move the lenses(elements) farther away from each other to enlarge the image before it exits the last element and imprints on the digital sensor.
If you have ever used a magnifying glass to focus sun light on a peace of paper to burn it this is a similar process. Now imagine a lens focusing on another lens and than another lens making that spot of light different sizes.

difference between memory stick and memory card?
There is a little speed difference and of course a physical size difference.
Memory stick is more commonly referred to as being a Sony media. Memory card is more in reference to SD(Secure Disk) and CF (Compact Flash) and others. Flash is pretty much thought of as Flash Drives as in the stick/USB type.

Any SD and SDHC memory should work fine. The most common is Sandisk.

Camcorder vs Camera for video
I don't want to carry around two devices if I can get by with one. How much video can you get out of a decent camera? Is battery life an issue?
Camcorders and digital cameras are designed to be best at there individual jobs. Pretty much all video camcorders have a Photo button allowing the capturing of still shots but there are usually limited to the video resolution the camcorder is set at at the time.
Digital cameras of the compact kind might have a video function but again limited in screen size, frame rate and record length in addition to no control over zoom and very poor audio.
Some Digital-SLR cameras are now shooting in HD with a little improved sound. This would also give you interchangeable lens, sharper optics and outstanding still photos.
The question to ask yourself is...Is video the primary or is great photos more important. Then decide from there the features you need with the other as secondary.
Battery life on the Camcorder and the Digital-SLR should be pretty high with the compact cameras being very short along with short record lengths.

I have a great video editing software, Im just wondering if there is a "goto" camera for this or one that is most used.
The most common and easiest format to edit is miniDV. Both SD (Standard Definition) and HD (High Definition) cameras are available in miniDV format.
Canon and Sony are usually the two most popular and reliable camcorders along with Panasonic and JVC following close behind.

How do I adjust the date and time on my NS-DSC10SL digital camera?
The Time setting should be in the Menu area of the camera. Look under change Date and Time in the users manual.
