i have a canon rebel xsi 450d 12.1 what would be the best lens & 2nd best lens

Depending on the shooting you want to do both 18-55mm and 70-300mm lenses would cover almost all basic shooting needs.

Will the lense from my Canon SLR work on Canon DSLR

If it is new enough to be auto focus it should work fine.
There is a conversion factor.
Most Canon D-SLR cameras have a 1.6 conversion which mean that a 70mm SLR lens will be a 112mm on a D-SLR camera.

I would like to be able to get a clear picture of an elk a half mile away, what size telephoto lense do I need?

You might get by with a 500mm f/ 1.4 lens + tripod + IS ( Image Stabilization ).
That is a pretty long distance.
You could also add a lens doubler (Teleconverter).

Lenses for DSLR

I have several old auto focus lenses from my old Minolta Maxxum 7i SLR. Does Canon or Nikon make a DSLR camera body that is compatible with these lenses or will I need to purchase an adapter for any new DSLR body that I buy?

Thank you,
Richard
You are in luck. Sony Alpha SLR cameras can use most Minolta Maxxum lenses.
Plus with the built in image stabilization (Steady Shot) on the Alpha bodies, you have instant stabilization without the cost of a VR lens.
Sony Alpha cameras also have many other great features.

my xsi wont auto focus

Auto focus on all D-SLR cameras need to be set on the lens (or sometimes on the body by the lens) to Auto. When the camera is in full Auto the body/lens defaults to Auto. A, S, P and Manual modes require the body/lens to be set to Auto to work.
If they are and the camera still has focus issues the focus position may have been changed. Check you manual for how to set focus position.

Is there such thing as an external drive for memory cards that you plug into the USB on your computer? If so, where can I find one?

That is sometimes called an Image Tank. It is a battery powered external drive with a built in multi card reader.
Check with you nearest BestBuy, some have had them in stock.

whats the easyest slr camera to use and down load

I have worked with the Canon, Nikon and Sony...I have found the Sony to be the easiest and more user friendly one to use.
All D-SLR cameras are pretty much the same the when it comes to down loading. It is best to get a multi-card reader. That way you don't have to wait for the pictures to transfer from the camera to use it again.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT MY CAMERA THE LENZ WILL NOT RETRACT

Best to take it to your nearest BestBuy and have the Geek Squad take a look. They will advise you as to what can be done.
