Is there such thing as an external drive for memory cards that you plug into the USB on your computer? If so, where can I find one?

That is sometimes called an Image Tank. It is a battery powered external drive with a built in multi card reader.
Check with you nearest BestBuy, some have had them in stock.

whats the easyest slr camera to use and down load

I have worked with the Canon, Nikon and Sony...I have found the Sony to be the easiest and more user friendly one to use.
All D-SLR cameras are pretty much the same the when it comes to down loading. It is best to get a multi-card reader. That way you don't have to wait for the pictures to transfer from the camera to use it again.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT MY CAMERA THE LENZ WILL NOT RETRACT

Best to take it to your nearest BestBuy and have the Geek Squad take a look. They will advise you as to what can be done.

what is slr?

some cameras after you push the botton don't take the picture for a few seconds, I want to purshase a camera that is instant when I snatch a picture.
what is this called? rapid shutter...?
Cameras that take awhile to take a picture have what is called "Shutter Lag". Mostly common in compact cameras.
D-SLR cameras have almost no shutter lag time.
SLR refers to the type of camera body. Single Lens Reflex.

Can you record from hard drive camcorder to a DVD? How?

The easiest way is to use a stand alone DvD recorder and connect using the A/V (Audio Video) cable from the camcorder to the DvD recorder.
Connect the cable to the out put of the camcorder to the video and audio input of the DvD. They are color coordinated...just match the colors. Set the DvD recorder to the correct input using the remote. Press play on the camcorder and put a blank DvD in the recorder and press record.
The other way is to have a DvD burner on your computer with editing software that supports DvD authoring. Transfer the footage to the computer, then use the software to edit the footage and burn the disk.

Looking for a digital camera that can take good quality video as well as quality pictures

My husband is deploying overseas and I want to get a camera for myself at home to take great pictures and video of the kids so he doesn't miss a thing while he is gone? Suggestions Please?
Both Nikon and Canon have D-SLR cameras that take HD video as well.
Stop by your nearest Best Buy and have an associate demonstrate one for you.

what is the difference between SD, MMC, SDHC cards?

I read that if you shoot video with your digital camera you best have a "high performance" memory card other wise your card will not hold more than 11 minutes or so of video/still shots cobimbined.
SD is Secure Disk and holds up to 2gb. SDHC is Secure Disk High Capacity and increases storage above 2gb and is faster.
MMC is MultiMedia Card and is only in the Mega Byte range, very low capacity.
If you are shooting video and your camera supports SDHC it would be best to use that memory.

beginners digital camera

If taking just snapshots, any of the compact cameras should do. If learning photography and taking more professional photographs is the goal, getting a entry level D-SLR would be best.
The D-SLR has longer battery life between charges, full manual control in addition to Auto,
sharper more vibrant pictures...and much more.
Canon, Nikon and Sony are a great choice for entry level beginner D-SLR.
