can these dvd recordings be played on any regular dvd player?
If the DvD is finalized and your DvD player accepts mini DvD disks ...they should play back.

what is digital and optical zoom
Optical Zoom is like using a magnifying glass. To enlarge the subject you are looking at you move the glass closer to make the image seem bigger. Digital zoom is like taking the subject and ENLARGING by stretching it. This will cause jagged edges and distortions.
The highest Optical Zoom is always the best to look for.

The JVC RBGZ-MS100 is a SD-HC memory based camcorder. There is no hard drive. It uses SD (Secure Disk) HC (High Capacity) memory.
Both regular SD up to 2gb and SD-HC will work.

Is there an inexpensive camcorder available to play 8mm tapes?
I have quite a few 8mm tapes of my children growing up. I no longer have the camcorder. Is there an inexpensive camcorder available that will play back these tapes so I can transfer them to DVD.
Certain Sony Digital 8 camcorders will play back 8mm tapes.
Finding a new 8mm or Digital 8 may be hard. There are several places on line carrying used items.

The External Mic Jack is an accessory that is slowly making it way back into camcorders after be omitted for a very long time.
Unfortunately it is still rarely found on consumer grade camcorders.
The Canon FS20 is said to have a external Mic jack.

Depending on the model it will either be a standard USB cable or a special Sony mini connector USB cable.

If the film-SLR lenses are new enough to be Auto Focus, chances are ...yes.

When I burn HD footage onto a dvd, will it remain in HD quality on the dvd?
I'm looking at getting an HD camcorder, but I want to know that when I go to burn the video onto a dvd that it's still going to be in HD.
When a AVCHD file is copied to a dvd and played back on a Blu-Ray play it will remain in HD.

Since the XS came with a 18-55mm lens and you get the 18-200mm lens you are not gaining much more zoom by re-adding the 18-55 coverage area over again.
The 70-300mm will add much more versatility by picking up close to where the stock lens lets off.
