What does Digital SLR mean?

Digital-SLR refers to a digital version of a 35mm Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera.
Single Lens being only one lens used so the viewfinder shows what the lens sees. Reflex refers to the prism or mirror that is used to reflect the image to the viewfinder. The mirror then flips out of the way allowing the image to expose the sensor when the shutter button is pushed.

what is the best zoom lens

nikon d80 camera
A generally all around good zoom lens is the 70-300mm.
Tamron recently released a 18-270mm all purpose lens.

Does "burst shooting" allow me to take a photo immediately (no lag) and do any "point and shoot" Olympus cameras have this feature?

Burst mode is for taking a series of photos in a row. Once the cameras has set itself for lighting conditions and exposure there should be no lag time while in burst mode unless conditions change drastically. Burst is more common on D-SLR cameras and rare on compacts.
The E-P1 has burst mode as do the Olympus D-SLR models.

Nikon D90 or Nikon d5000?

Im not sure what I would like to buy... Ive heard they smilar pero the d90 is better manufactured? Is that right?
Both cameras have useful features depending on your shooting habits and interests.
The D90, among other things shoots in full HD at cinema 24fps where as the D5000 shots at 720p.
Both have Live View but only the D5000 has a tilt/swivel screen.
Both cameras have a metal chassis but the D5000 is physically smaller than the D90.
If you can, try both cameras at a demo area and see which one feels better in YOUR hands. See which button layouts work well for you. Maybe that will help with your decisions. You cant go wrong with either one.

Canon EOS XTi versus NikonD90?

I'm confused as to what dslr camera to buy. Nikon D90 costs more than Canon XTi, but is it worth it to go to Nikon D90 or I could just settle with the Canon EOS xTi and save around $400+?
The Nikon D90 has many more features over the Canon XTi. Some being.... More megapixels. Plus HD movie mode.
You may find you will not out grow the D90 as fast as you would the XTI. The D90 is closer to PRO camera than the XTi.

camera usb drive!

i lost my nikon cool pix usb cord... what or where can i get one???
Check you nearest BestBuy. They might have a universal USB cable set that connects to many different connection types.
Take your camera with you. CoolPix models have different connectors between models.

I need a camera that won't delay when you take the picture?

I have a 2yr old - when you go to snap a picture it needs to take right then or the child won't be in the picture. I need a digital camera that won't delay.
This is a common complaint about compact cameras. It's known as Shutter Lag Time.
Some compact cameras are known to have a lag time as high as 2-3 seconds.
Digital -SLR cameras are much faster and will give you a better picture, more control over shooting conditions and almost no lag time ( usually under .10 seconds).
Canon, Nikon and Sony all have great entry level D-SLR cameras.

Does one brand of lens fit another brand of camera?

If I have a Canon camera will a Pentax lens fit onto it? or is it better to stick with the smae brand of lens as my camera?
You can find some adapter/converters online. These allow you to use lenses from one manufacturer on another. This will change the zoom factor slightly.
Some companies like Sigma and Tamron make the same lenses model for different cameras.

portriat nikon len AF

I have a nikon D40x what is a good mediun price len for general shots and portriat
Both the Nikon 50mm and the 85mm f/1.8 lenses would work well for portrait and general shooting. I leave the 50mm on my camera almost all the time.
Both of these are a prime lens...meaning there is no Zoom. If you want the subject bigger...you have to move closer.
These are also fast lenses. They require less light and can give you a shallow depth of field (soft /blurry background look).

What lens is needed?

I have a Nikon D60 with an 18-55mm lens and I absolutely love it, but I'd like to be able to zoom further than I can right now. Any suggestions on lenses? I'd like to be able to capture shots of my kids, particularly my daughter while she's playing soccer. Vibration reduction is a must for me too.
The Nikon 70-300mm would work well for your zoom needs. There are 2 models. The VR version has vibration reduction.
The 70-200mm f/2.8 VR does not have as much zoom as the 300mm but is a faster lens...f/2.8 vs f/4.5.
The faster lens will freeze the action better and give you a shallower depth of field.
