A:

The only difference between the two sets are that the 5500 is a "Smart" set. It has an Ethernet Port on the rear of the set to allow for internet access and it also has Netflix, etc. availability. If you already have an outboard box like for instance an Apple TV or Roku box for streaming content already, then you do could save $200 or more and just get the 5300.

You're right, the 5500 has 3D and Smart features, otherwise they're the same set. They were released in the same year a couple months from each other, I believe. The 5300 is just a more affordable "stripped down" version. Also, I think the 5500 has 3 hdmi input, compared to the 5300's 2.

The less expensive model does not have internet built into it. The more expensive one does. I have Apple TV and don't need to spend the extra for internet access, because I have the Apple TV.

This is correct, the 5300 doesn't support 3d or have built in smart. Otherwise they are the same TV

Optical only. Which is frustrating. But I bought an optical-to-bluetooth / 3.5mm adapter for cheap, it works great so don't be discouraged

it ONLY has One optical audio out. I had to buy a DAC from amazon to get sound to my stereo with RCA cables. The DAC was $20 OREI DA21X Premium.

I haven't noticed this television getting any hotter than any other flat screen. That said, mine sits atop a television stand; the area around the TV, including the back, is completely open and ventilated. If any TV is inside an enclosed - or partially enclosed - piece of furniture, or mounted flat against the wall, the ventilation will not be as good.

It does get warm, as did my other plasma. If you have it on all day, of course it's going to generate heat.

I think it depends on the connections you are using, if you have everything hooked up with HDMI and the soundbar has inputs for ACE jacks then you could output directly from the TV. Check the inputs of the soundbar you want to use. I go from the cable box to the DVD surround sound system with HDMI and output to the TV from the DVD with HDMI because that is the best route for my setup and I think most cable/Satellite boxes only have one HDMI output.

A:

Most people will connect the television directly to the Audio Bar, since most devices have audio that goes to the television, and a single connection from the TV will provide most of the audio.

In the event you don't have a TV audio output that works, you could connect it directly to your DirecTV box, and that would work just fine too. But for most people, connection to the TV is the easiest and most common configuration.
