what to buy?

I am looking for something to take the place of my out-dated (film) camera and my large camcorder, which I use to take family movies. I am a first time digital camera buyer. Do I get a digital camera or a camcorder? Any suggestions?
First....What “Film” camera do you have and what type? If it is a SLR there might be a chance that the lenses could be used on a New Digital-SLR. If you are used to the quality of a film camera you might prefer a D-SLR over a compact camera. The new D-SLR cameras operate the same as a film camera plus there is a Full Auto setting that will make it a Point-and-Shoot. As for the Camcorder, most of the compact cameras have a “Movie Mode”. The quality of the video has improved a lot over the past few years but a actual Camcorder will still take the best quality video. Also a camera's Movie Mode is limited on record length.
Camcorders also have the ability to take photos. Again the quality has improved immensely...but also you are limited to “Full Auto” mode ALL the time.
Both Camera and Camcorders have very specific jobs and are designed to do that job well. If they offer cross over functions that ability is secondary.
There are a lot of Very good camcorders under $300 now and Excellent D-SLR cameras starting $499, I would suggest rather than One unit that will do both (and one of these functions limited) that you look at entry lever D-SLR and Flash Based Camcorder.

sony digital camera

showing E:61:10 Do I need new battery or some other part
E:61:10 usually refers to a lens related problem. If the camera is still in warranty, or your have a protection plan, take it to your nearest BestBuy and have the Geek Squad take a look at it. If it is out of warranty still have them take a look and they will advice you on what can be done. There are some home remedies posted on the Web....but these might be risky to follow.

what does ELPH mean on canon cameras

ELPH is a model line of cameras from Canon. The name 'Elph' appeared in both mixed case and upper case in earlier Elph cameras, but recent cameras have standardized on upper case only, leading some to erroneously believe 'ELPH' refers to the acronym for Electronic Physics. In actuality, it is a combination of the word 'elf' (for a camera that is small and magical) and the word 'photograph.' Besides being memorable marketing, the use of a non-standard spelling of 'elf' makes it a defensible trademark.

Best camcorders to use with a Mac

Considering a camcorder that will interface with a Mac. Have been told that firewire connection is the important feature to consider. Is this true, and what models would you recommend
Firewire (IEEE 1394) is a safe choice for connecting to Mac. USB might be harder to find compatible. The next issue is the file format. Hard drive and Flash (Memory) based camcorders may have files that either have to be converted for Mac or just wont work. A Mini-DV with Firewire should work fine.

DSLR,and bird photography

What DSLR would be best for bird photography?
Interesting Question. I too will be on a Bird photo shoot soon at the Bosque del Apache Bird Sanctuary.
Any of the D-SLR Cameras would work well for Bird Photography. Some factors to figure on are:
A good Zoom lens. 300mm or more, so you don't need to get real close to your subject.
A Good Tripod. You will find good economy Tripods from Dynex to more serious Tripods like Manfrotto/Bogen, which is one of the best names in the industry, both consumer and on the pro level. You will need the Tripod to steady your camera when it is Zoomed all the way in on your subject.
It is also helpful to have a fast Burst Mode for sequential shots. Higher end cameras will have a faster Burst Mode. The faster the mode the more shots you will get of birds in flight.
All of this can be found at your nearest BestBuy. Some stores now carry Camera Armor. A silicon cover that helps keep moisture and dust away from you camera body. Nice when your camera may be in harsh environments. Bird Photography is a lot of fun and a challenge...Good Luck!

Which should I get; Canon - Powershot 14.7-Megapixel Digital Camera and Canon - EOS Digital Rebel XSi 12.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera?

I'm finding the pros and cons for both of them. I have a one year old and I'm pregnant with baby #2, so I do take lots of pictures! We live in a house that doesn't have good lighting at all..if that makes a difference. I would like to take "professional-like" pictures of my kids (so I don't have to get them done at the portrait studio and spend money), but I also want the camera for everyday kind of things. When I say everyday things, I mean like bringing the camera along on Halloween while my kids would be going trick-or-treating for the first time or when they're opening their Christmas presents. I feel like I want the SLR, but do people use SLR cameras for things like that? I think that's where I kind of get indecisive about it. I also want a camera that has fast shutter speed (which they probably both offer).
First...Congratulations. One of the things about kids...they move pretty fast. Compact cameras sometimes don't. They sometimes have what is referred to as Shutter Lag Time. Compacts are great to just keep handy, for every day type shots, but the type of photos you are describing that you want would be easier to get with a D-SLR. Canon and Nikon both make a great camera however Sony has a Alpha 300 and 350 that have an articulated screen ( it folds out) so you can hold the camera low ...child level..without getting down on the ground yourself. Also in live view the Auto Focus still works. There is built in Super Steady Shot to stabilize the shakiness of the camera, and many other features that are great for parents and what your hoping to do with a camera. Stop by your nearest BestBuy and have a demonstration. Again...Congratulations!

Mini DVD Camcorders? How do you play your movies on your TV?

Quickest and easiest way is to plug into your TV AUX input connection (usually on the side or front panel) with the A/V (Audio Video) Cables that should have came with your camcorder. They are color coded to match up (Yellow to Yellow, Red to Red, White to White). Then go to the TV and set the INPUT AUX corresponding with the one you connected to with your remote. Press play on the camcorder and you should see the video and hear the audio. You can also connect to a VCR or Stand Alone DvD Burner using the same method and make a copy of the video to play back again later.

what is Burst mode

Bust mode is multiple photos take in secession to show a series or sequence of motion. For example a golf swing. Burst Mode is very popular in sports photography so as to not miss the action. Almost all cameras have a burst mode (even some compact cameras) but depending on the model may be very slow and limited to some being almost as fast as video. The average for entry level D-SLR is 3 frames per second. Then, depending on the speed of the camera and memory, it may take many seconds to record these images before the camera is ready to take the next set of photos. Some Higher End D-SLR cameras are so fast they will continue the shoot until you take your finger off the shutter release.

Looking for a camcorder with a view finder that provides good pictures. Any recommendation?

Viewfinders are another option that manufactures are cutting back on to reduce cost. Higher end Professional camcorders will generally have a viewfinder and sometimes a LCD screen. Consumer and Pro-sumer camcorders will most likely not have one. We do have some models with viewfinders available on line at http://www.bestbuybusiness.com/.

Which camera is best for when taking photos with a good lens

I want to take pictures at a sci fi convention next year and want pictures of the actors from the show not the back of people's head
Which camera has the lens I need.
All most every convention have restrictions on Flash Photography. They almost never allow it. Your “Point and Shoot” type camera will want to use a flash. Using a D-SLR will give you control over the sensitivity of the sensor allowing great shots in low/natural light. Plus the option of adding higher power Optical lenses for better zoom. Most of the cameras such as Sony and Canon have really good noise reduction for higher ISO “Sensitivity “ settings.
Don't be misled by the term “Point and Shoot”....all cameras are Point and Shoot. Be it a Compact...Advanced...or Digital-SLR. ALL cameras can be set to full AUTO. Only D-SLR cameras allow you full control in Manual mode.
There are many models of D-SLR that start at $499 ...not much more cost than a quality compact. Sometimes there are sale bundles that include the 300mm lens. Perfect for event photography.
Check your nearest BestBuy for current sales.
