Is there a such thing as a camcorder that can also take pictures?
Almost all Camcorders take photos. The image size is limited due to video resolution and the quality of the photos are not as good as the Compact Cameras or the Digital-SLR, but the quality has improved greatly over earlier models.

Can I connect an external camera to a camcorder?

I would like to hook up an external camera to a camcorder. Is this possible? Which model should I buy?
Look for a Camcorder that has A/V (Audio Video) Input capability. The external Camera you have should have Video out at least. You will probable need a Barrel Connector also. That is a connector that is a Male RCA to Male RCA so you can hook up the two ends of the cables. Then put the Camcorder in VTR record Mode and you should see the video from the external camera.

If you have not recorded any new video to your Camcorder you may be able to recover some if not all of the erased footage. Take your Camcorder to your nearest BestBuy and have the Geek Squad take a look at it. They may have software that can recover deleted files off the Hard Drive.

Sony has several models with Night Vision. They can shoot in total darkness (0 LUX) by using a built in IR (Infra Red) light that is visible only to the sensor.

Which camera is most durable, simple, and digital?

I have workers who will need digital cameras for working in field. Needless to say, the cameras should be able to withstand a drop and bumps. The cameras need to be simple- the less complex they are, the better.
Olympus makes a line of Shock and Weather proof cameras that are easy to use and take great photos. Stop by your nearest BestBuy and take a look at the Olympus SW line.

There has been no formal replacement announced. Canon has several Powershot models available at BestBuy.com or stop by your nearest BestBuy and take a look.

PLEASE LOOK. Camcorder for recording concerts or music video?

I'm looking for a camcorder with a good mic that can handle anything from high gain to soft mellow live concerts without distorting the audio.

Go to Bestbuybusiness.com and look at the Canon, Panasonic and Sony line of Pro Camcorders. The Canon GL2 and the XL2 have High Quality mics and they also give you the control over mic levels. Sony also has the DCR-VX2100 & HDR-FX1 (High Definition). Panasonic has the AG-DVC20. All of these Camcorders should give you the control you need. By adding an XLR connector to these Camcorders you'll be able to patch into the mixing boards and use direct line audio for the best quality.

Is the Sony DCR-DCD 108 a good buy? And will it also take decent photos?

I can get this for under $300, but am concerned about the quality of the pictures, as I want to use it for both.
Sony makes good, tough, reliable equipment. I own several Sony Camcorders and one Sony DSLR my self and have always been happy with my Sony equipment. However....a Camcorder is designed to take Video. That is it's primary function. The quality of photo you get will be good but not on the level of a compact camera and neither will be in the photo quality of a Digital – SLR. They all have their jobs they were designed to do. My Rule of thumb is: Camcorder = BIG Video..little picture. Digital Camera = BIG Picture...little video.
