First time SLR purchase

I'm a mom in the gymn trying to capture action shots. I have a Kodak easyshare Z710 with with 10x optipcal zoom that isn't doing the job (or I don't have it set correctly?). I enjoy photography and would like to get into it more. Is there a good (not to complicated) SLR that you could recommend?
No matter what Digital-SLR you get they all have a full auto setting making them a Point-and-Shoot camera until you get the hang of full manual or semi full modes.
Action shots in any sports are easier to get when the camera has a fast burst mode (sequential shooting).
Entry level cameras are usually at 3-4fps (frames per second) while semi-pro and pro are 6-8fps and higher.
Another factor that you may want to consider is physical size. I shoot with a Sony a700. It is a pretty big camera and my wife doesn't care for the size. She uses my much smaller a200.
The Canon XSi is physically smaller than a 50D.
Try several cameras at the demo area of your nearest BestBuy and look for a camera that feels good in your hands.

looking for a sony camcorder?

I was in a local store and they had a sony camcorder with 8GB internal memory in it . I was looking for it online and can't find it. Can you HELP?
There was a Sony HDR-UX20 available at one time.
There was also a DCR-SX41 and a SX41.
Try searching for one of these.

why is "memory full" showing after only 3 pictures taken? camera has 18 MB internal memory.

Depending on the megapixel count of your camera, the resolution setting and the type of file the image is being saved as, 18 megs can be eaten up very quickly.
A 10mp image at full resolution and using jpg compression could be about 2-4 megs big.
Much higher is saved as a RAW file.
Internal memory is really just a safety buffer if the main memory is full.

megapixels

i have read that a picture taken with a DSLR 6 MP will be double the Quality than that of a 6MP pic taken with a p&s. is that true? and if so why?
The physical size of the sensor makes a big difference. The sensor in a compact camera is roughly the size of a eraser on a pencil..the one on a Digital-SLR is slightly bigger than a nickel.
The larger sensor gathers more light...more light means a sharper image, more color clarity.

What is the value of the D300s 12.3 mp over the d90 12.9MP Nikon slr?

What is the value of the D300s 12.3 MP over the D90 12.9 MP Nikon?
The D300 is more of a semi-pro camera verses the D90 as a more advanced amateur camera.
The D90 has HD video recording and a burst still mode at up to 4fps.
The D300 has no video mode and a fast burst mode of up to 8fps...great for sports and action shots.
There are several other features on the D300 that are helpful for certain kinds of shooting.

If we buy a hard-drive type camcorder, after downloading to our PC, can we then burn it onto a DVD installed in our PC?

Yes generally you can. You can either archive the footage to a DvD or if you have video editing software you can make a Video DvD that can be played on a DvD player. This will take longer as the footage usually has to be converted for playing on DvD.

Need help choosing a camcorder

I'm looking for a camcorder to primarily record home videos of family, daughter cheerleading (indoors and outdoors), use to think i wanted the dvd but after reviewing looks like the flash memory is maybe better do to longer record time but my computer is older and slow and hate to mess with the fuss of uploading to computer then burning to dvd, which i don't even know it it has that. If you upload from memory card to dvd what length on a dvd are you able to fill as compared to recording with a dvd camcorder and taking it out and putting it straight into the dvd player. Im currently looking at the sony handy cam dvd-hybrid and the canon-digital camcorder.
The DvD based camcorders are nice in being able to play on a regular player but they do have a short record length..half hour on mini DvD.
Flash based would give you longer record times. You could plug directly from camera to a stand alone DvD Recorder and copy your footage.
You could also look at a Sony Express DvD recorder. They have multi card readers built in so you don't need to connect to a computer. Or you can plug the camera directly into the burner.

Is there a slr digital camera that runs on regular batteries?

I am going on an African safari where electricity is iffy to use a rechargeable battery operated camera.
Some companies make a battery that holds AA batteries inside to go into certain cameras.
Try searching for AA to rechargeable converter battery.

70-300mm lens for nikon d60 is it good?

I am wanting to zoom and try to get a good show of wildlife and the moon at night, is this a good lens?
I have taken many Moon pictures with a 70-300mm lens and they have turned out fine.
Good lens for wild life and sports too.
