Yes. I do not use mine for that, but have seen a lot of other people talking about using it for that. But, do not waste your money. Go with a better drive. These things are pure garbage. They last just long enough to outlast the warranty, and for you to give them a favorable review. Then the internal parts, which WD knows are going to fail, fail. It powers up only when being utilized. Otherwise, it is in a standby mode until something tries to access it. No "hard" power on/off switch.by

Sadly, it is not easy to find an answer. I'm not able to find any reliable information on the actual RPM of this specific drive (I have the 4TB version). It is not specified in product manual or on published specs directly availabe from the company (at least materials in the packaging within my product box or readily available on the internet). Many external drives are 5400rpm. If you look on non-WD sites selling this exact drive you will find it advertised as either 5400RPM or 7200RPM. A deeper search of WD support forums suggests that WD will place either a 5400 or 7200 RPM drive in enclosures such as this at their manufacturing discretion, a statement which implies that they put in a drive that is readily available at the time of manufacture. To complicate things a bit more, WD also has some drives that are able to change their RPM speed to save energy, though that type of drive is not specified in this particular product in anything I can find. If your needs for an external drive require a specific sustained rate of data transfer (such as HD editing applications, etc.), I would recommend a drive that actually publishes its specs or is designed for a specific application - WD makes thunderbolt drives designed for Mac video editing. Another option would be to purchase a drive of known RPM and a separate enclosure for it.by

The software is a watered-down version of Acronis True Image, so you should be able to image your whole HDD, WIndows system partition and everything. I've heard the version is not as good as full blown Acronis. If you install it, you can get Full version of Acronis for the price of an upgrade (~$20 per computer, I think). If you go to the Acronis site, the chat people can answer all your questions. They pursue new customers very aggressively.I would never install Acronis because is permanent: google how to uninstall Acronis: is a three page procedure involving manually changing registry keys. Acronis is like a nuclear power plant in your back yard: when it works, is almost magically good. But if something goes wrong...you'll need very serious help.
That said, every local IT little store I asked suggested it for backup software. Still, I don't like invasive software. I would never use it.

That depends on your back software. i do not recommend using the software that comes with the drive. I use CrashPlan for home. It only backs up data files and other files I specify but it does not backup the how operating system.by

Yes. I have this product connected to my Xbox One and it works great. Once you connect it the Xbox One walks you through the setup and you're up and running in a matter of minutes. The only pain, but necessary evil is copying your existing games to the hard drive however the USB 3.0 makes it much faster than re-downloading each game. I'd definitely suggest the copy feature.by

Many External hard drives from across many different brands, tend to fail over time. how reliable is this HDD ?.. How long is it expected to last. I plan on Using it for my xbox one, and as any gamer would know loss of data is like the plague! As far as it being a AC powered, is it safe to leave plugged in, or can it be unplugged when not in use ? If I am correct the Hard drive has a power button, is it safe to turn the hard drive off when not in use without corruption of data. Also if the power goes out to lets say a power surge protector which the hard drive would be plugged into will the hard drive be ok, and not lose data ? or every time the power shuts off to the house because lets say your normal power outage will the HDD be safe ? or will loss of data or corruption occur ? The struggle with hard drives is if they fail, or become damaged.. data is loss which money can not replace.. and the HDD is not cheap in general!by

I have had many external drives. I have had many fail. Usually I spot a problem and copy the drive to a new one before data is lost. I currently have SIX 3 TB external WD My Book external hard drives that I access frequently. I also experience power outages every couple months. These WD My Book 3 TB drives have been the most reliable of the 20 plus that I have used over the past couple decades. I am now Buying more to to use as copies of my current drives. All drives can fail over time. But my experience with this particular drive is so positive that I am going to use the same drive to make copies of the ones I have. How long does this drive last? I bought my first one when they first came out and it is still in use . I leave all the drives plugged in and connected all the time and have no trouble even in unexpected power failures. I usually have a window open for every drive all the time and frequent access causes no problems. I often move files from one drive to another. I do no disk maintenance - it does a lot of excessive writing to disk, so I think I extend disk life by just letting it be. This is a most solid dependable drive. Much like some people will only buy a particular brand of car, I have only trusted WD My Book for a Very Long time (since the 3 TB was first available.)by

I have only had the drive about 3 months and have had no problems. I own another portable WD hard drive that is over 10 years in age that is still functioning. As far as power concerns, I found myself asking similar questions. I did not find a power button on the drive and had concerns about it being plugged in 24/7 without powering down. It appears it is on if it is plugged in and off if unplugged. I asked Best Buy about the constant power concern. They commented that it would probably task the drive more to be powering it off and on all the time than to just leave it plugged in 24/7. First, an external HDD is most often used as a back up. So if one drive goes out your data is saved on another drive.Secondly, it's difficult to give reliability on a new product, but judging by experiences with WD HDDs they are extremely reliable, I have a 500GB that is at least six years old and runs great.
You shouldn't have to worry about unplugging or turning it off. Keeping it on constantly does not draw a lot of power and will not harm the drive. A power surge or lightening strike can ruin anything electrical but a simple power outage shouldn't damage it. You can plug it into a UPS and then the battery backup can help.

The short answer is yes. If you use a router that has a USB port for a network drive, simply plug it in and follow your routers directions. If not, you would have to "share" the drive to the other computer. If all of this sounds to complicated I would spend the little extra a get a MyBook Live or MyBook World. They connect to your router through a ethernet cable and are ready to run immediately.by
