Yes. I have used this drive formatted to NTFS on Ubuntu without problems recognizing it. The other 2 I purchased I cracked open the case and put the drive itself into my desktop (internal HDD)..I like starting off fresh, wiped it, initialized it to GPT formatted to ext4...works like a champ...now i just screwed myself it will crash in 24 hours lol

You can use any external hard drive with Linux. You may need to reformat it - but even that is not certain. If you connect it and it works, you're done. In the unlikely event the drive is not recognized, most Linux distributions come with the program called Gparted pre-installed, which can take care of reformatting the drive. Any pre-loaded software on the external disk will almost certainly be Mac or Windows specific, and not usable for Linux - but the drive will work fine as external storage.

yes, a PS4 will see/read the drive, and you can use external hard drives with the PS4 to store things like media files (movies, music, pictures, etc). However, you will not be able to install games to, or play games from an external hard drive. The only way to expand that capacity is to buy a bigger 2.5 inch drive and swap out the factory drive (currently, as far as Im aware, 2tb is the biggest available). And yes, I know about the Nyko Databank. I bought one, and tried it, and it didnt work. When Sony found out I had a 3rd party hardware hack, they refused to support/trouble shoot the problems, and I found Nykos tech support to be totally incompetent. So, I have a 2tb. 2.5 inch drive in my PS4 now, and this exact drive on my XBox One... Hope that clarifies.

No, it won't work on a PS4, because the PS4 OS doesn't support external Harddrives. (I wish it did as I would buy another one of these and hook it up to my PS4)

I am not sure about the Ps4 but I do know that on the Xbox one you can only use it for the xbox one it formats it that way.

I am fairly confident that the PS4 does not allow the use of external hard drives for the running and storage of games(I wish it did). You can get an external, take it apart, and use the inner drive to replace your current standard PS4 drive but it must be a 2.5" drive which I pretty sure this isn't .

I don't think I would use it for Gaming as they are not fast enough (unless you are playing chess) , it may be USB 3.0 but the drive is not actually fast enough to utilize that. Get a WD black internal drive or an SSD drive for gaming

The external case of the drive only has a power connector, a USB 3.0 connection, and a Kensington lock connector. You may be able to crack open the case and access the internals, but I haven't gone that far.

I have SKY here in Brazil. Depends upon your box. Sky formats the disk in a way, encodes it, so you can not record a movie/program and take it to some other box. This is part of the copywrite laws. In addition, you can not plug it into a PC, USB or SATA and read the data.

I had problems with their light DVR failing. The disk, only way to get it back, was to use a hard drive management software, where I could go in, reset partitions, and format it. As to MyBook, it should work and it does come only with USB cables. The DVR I had, before getting an internal version (much better) was only USB connections.

I did not notice a Sata port on the hard drive. I noticed a locking mechanism and a power cord outlet. That is a great question to ask a best buy employee

The short answer is no. For more information, this drive is only usb 3.0 and 2.0. It has a micro usb.3.0 port at comes with a usb A to usb micro cable. There are no SATA ports on this device.

Doubtful. You need to be able to access the drive from a pc, plus your storage is limited to your plan with directv.

You should look into Western Digital's network connected drives. They may be better suited to what you are trying to do.

It's not so much that you program it for streaming. It has no capability to stream. It is not a MyCloud. It only stores data. You download to the drive via your computer and plug it in to your TV if your TV supports files on external USB drives.

dependent on your tv of course, this 4tb hard drive is perfect for movie storage. unfortunately tho, most tvs dont support usb storage over 2tb due their software structure (i.e. 32-bit or 64-bit). i own a 55" lg 3D smart tv (55lm6700) and it only reads/supports up to 2tb. i purchased this wd 4tb drive and the wd 2tb drive, but was only able to use the 2tb.
