yes, a PS4 will see/read the drive, and you can use external hard drives with the PS4 to store things like media files (movies, music, pictures, etc). However, you will not be able to install games to, or play games from an external hard drive. The only way to expand that capacity is to buy a bigger 2.5 inch drive and swap out the factory drive (currently, as far as Im aware, 2tb is the biggest available). And yes, I know about the Nyko Databank. I bought one, and tried it, and it didnt work. When Sony found out I had a 3rd party hardware hack, they refused to support/trouble shoot the problems, and I found Nykos tech support to be totally incompetent. So, I have a 2tb. 2.5 inch drive in my PS4 now, and this exact drive on my XBox One... Hope that clarifies.
