Why would you need to record anything from Roku? All the channels I've seen are on demand, so you can play them or come back to them whenever you want, for as long as the content is available.

Iam no expert just a every day joe but I can at least tell you what I do know. The older roku's prior to the roku 3,and excluding the roku stick,I belive if it has the audio video jacks you can then hook up a dvd,vcr recorder to record what is being streamed on the roku. Now rember the ROKU is a media streaming device so at ANY TIME you can watch 90% of what can be found on the ROKU. A small select few apps do stream a "live channel" which woulden't be able to be view any other time but unless your loking to record Netflix streaming movies or hulu plus content that stuff is copyright protected. It would be technically illegal to record the copyrighted media. Yes it can be done illegaly so I shall not discuss on how. Their's really not much need to record from a roku I belive. If it's a issue due to internet bandwith or connectivity and you want to be able to record so then you can watch with out having the roku on then I would go with a $80.00 app called PlayOn with PlayLater and MyMedia. It is a little techy I do warn not much thoe and then on your computer you can record/download content onto a hard drive from the web for later view on your roku and you can record most apps found directly on your roku through the PlayLater App/PlayOn App/MyMedia App. The app works on roku and any other internet device capable of installing the PlayOn app like a smart phone/tablet.Only downfall is THAT YOU MUST HAVE YOUR COMPUTER ON AND NOT ALLOW IT TO GO INTO SLEEP MODE TO USE THE APP ON YOUR ROKU OR ANY OTHER DEVICE AND YOU MUST BE IN RANGE OF YOUR HOME NETWORK . So you can't go to a neighbors 2 blocks away and use your PlayOn app and cast it to their tv .Hear is the website thoe. playon.tv. I have it and I love it. I hope someone els can help you out more than I can and iam sorry I don't know if you can or can't use your VERISON FIOS DVR to record off yourROKU. I would assume that your VERISON FIOS DVR RECIVER is encrypted to only record content provided by VERISON FIOS and I would assume you can't DVR Pay-Per-View or ONDEMAND contant currently with your VERISON FIOS DVR which would only reinforce my belief of your VERISON FIOS DVR being unable to record any media content from a forein device such as a ROKU. I love Verison and wish I had their FIOS so iam hopeing iam wrong and that you can record roku on your DVR some how. best of luck. I do not believe so - this is not really a question for the Roku device but more so for our Fios DVR unit. IF your DVR unit could do so - I do not see why you could not record shows in Roku. The major downside that I could see would be around the setup of the actual program that you would want to record.

So short answer - in theory you should be able to, but again its not up to the Roku box, but rather the device you are using as your recorder.

Most of the channels are free but some of them charge a monthly fee usually $1.99 or so and some charge by the show. The most expensive channels I have seen are Netflix and Hulu at $7.99 each and a couple of others for $4.99.

It may have access to these channels but the content may not be worth watching. You can get access to anything on tv but some require a subscription. Kind of like watching YouTube.com (which is also available on Roku for free).
You may want to look at HULU.COM. Hulu provides major network programs within a day of original airing. It costs $8?? A month and has advertisements.

Yes you have to pay to have accounts on netflix or hulu Plus etc.. This isnt a replacement for cable you're not going to get network programming with it. Go to roku website for more info

I don't see where they get the 1,500 channels figure. Some channels are free and some are subscription. You get what you pay for, for the most part. The free stuff is mostly older and B type movies. Go to roku.com/channels to see the list.

In most cases yes there is a monthly fee for most of these services however there are some that are free but to get all that they offer you would have to pay a fee or put-up with annoying advertisement.
Even with this it is still cheaper in the long run to use the Roku with the services you would use the most such as Netflix and Amazon.

Many don't have any fees associated with them, however you might have to have a subscription (Netflix,Hulu Plus, etc) and others are only available if you get the channel through your select cable/internet provider (Watch ESPN, ESPN 3, etc).

Nope. As far a I can tell it uses preprogrammed channels and only uses the internet to connect to these channels. Have yet to find a way to add any more.

http://www.playon.tv/playcast might do what you're looking for. I've never used it, so I can't tell you anything about it, and I don't know if a Roku will do anything without Internet access.

You can stream "moves, music, videos and pictures" from a "USB stick / drive, wired connection to a media server, wireless connection to a media server, the internet".

You *MUST* have internet access to register the product initially. You can't get past the "welcome" screen without the Roku box being activated on the web and tied to your Roku Account. After that, they don't care and you can be "disconnected" from the Internet.

I've never found a way to really "Mirror" the laptop screen on the Roku boxes but you can use Plex to stream media from your laptop. You can use a Roku app for your Android Phone to control the Roku player (it turns your phone into a glorified remote which is actually pretty cool if you have a bunch of them in your house or you need to enter passwords or search for stuff - the phone has a full keyboard) but I've not found a way to display the screen from your android phone on the Roku box. Honestly, that would be horrible. I don't care the resolution of your phone, phone streamed media is poor quality when streamed to a big TV (If you really want to do that, look at Google's Chromecast.)

But, for watching movies that you have stored on your computer, Plex is the way to go. Plex is a free download (open source) for the "Server" portion and the Plex client for Roku (they call them "Channels") is a one time $7.00 fee tied to your Roku Account. (I.E, if you have 10 Roku devices tied to the same account, you only buy the Plex app once). But... downloading "Channels", requires an internet connection so you would want to do that somewhere where you have access.

This is not the best device for that.. it has some capabilities of wired mirroring but you could get what u r looking for for under 40 at best buy

If you connect your laptop to that wireless router and you then have internet access then yes the Roku would work for you. If it is just a wireless router that connects computers in the cottage together and absolutely NO Internet Access whatsoever, then no, the Roku would not work for you at the cottage. Roku needs internet access to access content, login to any subscribed channels such as Netflix, etc. Roku requires Internet, either wired or wireless. Be sure to check the Roku model to ensure it has wired or wireless (or both) to fit your needs.
