It depends on how many songs per CD but yes, An Audio CD can hold max. 80 minutes of music. The file size of the source is not important. It's because the source (mp3, m4a, WAV or AIFF) has to be converted to the native format of an audio CD (16 bit PCM) and that allows only 80 minutes on a 700 MB CD.You should have no problem.

How many will it hold? About 70 times your entire collection.....For reference
2 terabyte drive can hold about 650,000 3MB Photos
OR
500,000 MP3 Files @ 4 minutes per song
which would be about 4 years of music or 33,332 hours of music.....
if you are like me and store 1080P MOVIES compressed they run about 2Gig compressed so about 1,000 movies.
If you just rip the BluRay without altering it more like 200-250....I would suggest COMPRESSION!

PS if you are a MUSIC lover then you might really like an addional product you can get at Best Buy. It is a WIRELESS USB drive from SAN DISK. I have several and they are really SUPER for trips. They fit in your pocket and when turned on they become their own WIFI device and serve the files on the drive to those connecting to it. The kids can play music or watch movies on devices that have WIFI or those with a USB port... Charge it by plugging it into a USB somewhere like an Iphone charger!.....Myh son took 6 movies to Disney and lots of songs and shared them on the bus with his friends. VERY COOL!

You should not have any problem fitting your complete CD Collection in a 2 Terrabyte Drive. Also this appears to be at a very reasonable price. If you don't have a Best Buy store card, you should get one. I did and I have saved 5% on every one of the purchases I've made since. This has been a lot of money.8 years, 8 months ago

Yes it should fit all the CDs. Especially if you store them in a digital format that uses a bit of compression and not in WAV format...I prefer OggPCM for Linux or ALAC (Apple) or a high bit rate MP3 is okay too. FLAC would be another option.by

1 TB is 100,000,000 MBs. A music CD, at most, will hold 737MB each when full. That's 1428 CDs per TB. Since this particular device is 2TB that means roughly 2856 CDs.by

Assuming your cd's are the large size (800mb) 500 cd's would be approximately 400gb which would only be 20% of the drive. If you use a proper software to convert them to mp3, if they are not already, you would use way less space as well.Plenty of storage here for that and a whole lot more.

This is way more storage then you will need. Assuming that each CD is approximately 60 minutes it will take about 80MB of storage so this device would hold over 26,000 CDs.8 years, 8 months ago

Yes, technically you could do this but because it's a traditional hard drive and has moving parts it's not an ideal mobile drive. Since they make large capacity flash drives now I would just buy one of those since they are much more durable for what you want to do.by

i have a similar drive from another manufacturer. Aside from drivers, there may be some software involved but it will most likely be on the portable drive. It should work pretty much as a flash drive. Mine does. Straight copying of files should work just fine.by

It will work for you. Just don't buy the one that's for the cloud as that one is a little more difficult with setting up for regular cpu users. Get the one that is standard that you can plugin to the computer. Like this one WD - My Book 6TB External USB 3.0/2.0 Hard Drive - Black. Maybe not as big but the same brand/type.by

If you choose not to use it you can just delete if all form the drive. I'm a multi platform user as well with multiple HD solutions. If your looking for a NAS I recommend the WD - My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage HD (NAS) - Model: WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN. The software allows for all OS & mobile access. Internet speeds dictate uo/down speeds. As for the My Passport Ultra you have two options to get it to work on Mac/PC reformat to FAT32, simple but it slows the drives speed considerable. There are 3rd party apps for the Mac to be able to read/write the NTFS formatted drives, Paragon NTFS for Mac OS X and Tuxera NTFS. Only one of those can run at a time but they work.Good luck!

Some drives come with software for the mac to let you keep it formatted for Windows while using it on the mac. I don't believe this one does, but you can purchase it if that is important. Paragon makes software for both Mac and Windows that lets them read the other computer's drives. Are you thinking of plugging this into a router and accessing over the network or are you wanting a product like the seagate central?To answer your question though it can be used by both depending on if it is formatted properly. Example format it with fat not ntfs. You may still run into problems though if you want to save files larger than 2 gb

Both Windows Vista and Windows 8.1 use an NTFS HDD format and both can read the same disk formats. Both will be able to read and write whichever files you may need them to from or to your external HDD.9 years, 5 months ago

Unless you have a very exotic security setup, you should be able to move the drive seemlessly between the two machines, much as you might a memory stick. Just try to remember to save and close all your files and to use the "eject" menu option in explorer, before unplugging from the machine.by

I can't answer this definitively not having both Vista and 8.1 right in front of me, but there were no big formatting changes between vista and 8.1. Both can read NTFS or FAT, so regardless of how you have it formatted on Vista, 8.1 should be absolutely fine with it.by

As mentioned in my review, I tried, but ended up crashing my drive. While it is technically possible, it is not recommended. I lost all of my backup data. Fortunately, I was setting up a new computer and replacing an old drive that was ful and still had the few days of lost data still on my computers.Hope this helps.

Your answer is YES but not as well or easily... The Mac's Time Machine software requires the drive use the Mac OS Extended, while Windows will want the drive to use FAT32 or NTFS. The Mac can use FAT32, as can Windows, however you would possibly be limited to some issues, like files over 4GB can't be stored on a FAT32 format, which would generally be disk images, large video files or could be various types of large formats. And there are sometimes issues with file names being too long or having incompatible characters or formatting.So the answer is yes, if you don't have any of the conflicting issues, you may be able to find either bundled or other backup software for either or both Mac and Windows that can backup to a single drive in FAT32 format. However, I would recommend using separate drives for best compatibility, especially if you have a lot of stuff to backup. If its just some documents and a few photos from each, then sharing should't be too troublesome. Good luck!

You will have to reformat it to work with MAC and PC but it can be done.I believe the instructions are in the manual.

Usually pc to mac is not compatible due to different file systems, chances are anything you store to any hard drive whether it be internal or external on a PC will be required to be formatted prior to being used on a mac.8 years, 8 months ago

Works great as long as you don't drop it!!! I lost the photos of all my grandkids since birth, plus my taxes, etc. because I downloaded my whole desktop, then dropped it from a 3 foot table top. I guess you need to back-up your back-up.8 years, 9 months ago
